3 arrested for disguising Australian beef as Japanese
TAKAMATSU — Three men were arrested Thursday on suspicion of falsely labeling Australian beef as Japanese and delivering it to elementary schools in Marugame, Kagawa Prefecture, for school lunches last year, police said.
The suspects Yukio Yamashita, 62, a local meat shop owner, and Shigeharu Motoki, 34, and Hiroyuki Katayama, 32, former employees of a local meat wholesaler, are charged with fraud and violation of the unfair competition prevention law, the Kagawa prefecture police said. According to the investigation, the three allegedly shipped about 1.1 ton of thigh meat from Australia with fake proof of inspection claiming it was produced in Hokkaido to the school lunch committee in December last year.
