After his sublime performance against Chile and his unquestionable quality, what now for Riquelme? His relationship with Villarreal seems to have broken down and Boca Juniors are unable to afford his wages and his transfer fee, what is going to happen to him.

Where does he go now?

Most South American clubs can't afford him, but I'm certain that someone will pick him up in January. A european club will surely be interested in him. His fitness and quality in the qualifers have been excellent. There was a lot of talk about Atletico Madrid, but questions about them having to change their formation to accommodate him. I think for him, any team can accommodate his play- particularly a team like Atletico who have made a disappointing start to the season.

South American teams can't afford him, Villareal don't want him.....thus one of the greatest footballer playing now is sitting on the couch..

I think a move to Atletico or Italian Giant's Juventus would be great for Riquelme for a number of reasons. Riquelme is a player that you need to build around and history has shown that if he isn't the main playmaker, then its hard to fit him into the team. I.e. he ain't going to do any defensive work. So he needs to find a team which will accommodate him and let him play to his strengths.

If he moved to Atletico, people would have to start taking them seriously. They already have some quality players with lots of pace and Riquelme would really be the icing on the cake for them. Juve to me, seem like a team crying out for him. He is exactly what they need. A creative playmaker who a new younger Juve team can be built around.

He ain't going to Man City, that's for sure. It would be the coup of the century if he went there and anyway, why would Man City go for him when they have Elano who is doing a great job in a similar position. Plus would Riquelme really want to be go to Man City???

I don't think that Milan will happen. They already have Kaka and personally, I think Inter Milan would be a bad move as they have a reputation of buying great players and not really getting them to gel as a team.

I think that you guys have pretty much hit the nail on the head. Teams need to adjust their formation/style of play to accomodate Riquelme. Once this is achieved, which isn't always easy, the other players must be prepared to work around Riquelme and play a type of football that suits his style of overall movement. He needs players to position themselves well enough around him, and they also have to offer him the time and space that he requires to execute his plays effectively.

This was achieved at Villarreal for some time with success. At the same time, not all teams are prepared to adjust things for just one player. If he went to Juventus, it would be excellent for the club and the player.
