Matthew Spiranovic is a 19 year old Australian defender currently playing for FC Nurnberg in the German Bundesliga where he played in last seasons German Cup Winning team at the age of 18 years of age.
He is playing regular first team football in one of the world best leagues, up against the likes of Miroslav Klose, Luca Toni, Lukas Podolski & Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich on the weekend & helped his team qualify to UEFA Cup group stage a few days earlier.
Yet players whom are playing in the A-League or England's lower leagues if not in the reserves are picked ahead of him in the Australian national team. He was picked in the squad for the Uruguay friendly a week after staring in the German Cup Final but was never given a his first senior international cap.
Then he wasnt picked in Australia's 23 man squad for the AFC Asia Cup or even part of the 7 stand by squad members. Patrick Kisnorbo, Simmon Colosimo, Jade North & Adrian Leijer were picked in front of him. He has represented Australia at under 20's level (Young Socceroos) & Olympic level (Olyroos) but that isnt enough to tire him down with Australia.
He can still choose to play for Croatia whom have been trying to convince him by ringing his parents. Matthew Spiranovic is not the only young Australian with Croatian heritage being approached by Croatia. Dario Vidosic also of FC Nurnberg & Danny Vukovic of the Central Coast Mariners are in the same boat. Bruce Djite can play for the USA being born there.
Hopefully Graham Arnold or whom ever the National Team Coach is during the start of Australia's World Cup Qualifying campaign for South Africa 2010 begining in February cap these great young talent & can tire them down with Australia for ever.
Graham Arnold was the man who capped Scott McDonald to Australia in the Asian Cup Qualifier against Bahrain when Scotland were trying to pick him for their national team. How good does that look now that he is scoring winning goals for Glasgow Celtic against the European Champions AC Milan?
Hopefully he can say he was the coach who capped these others aswell.
