RAFAEL BENITEZ is tracking Brazilian striker Afonso Alves as he contemplates another spending spree in the January transfer window.
Alves is one of several names under consideration by the Liverpool manager, who can expect further backing from the club’s co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.
And Benitez’s interest would suggest Peter Crouch is heading for an Anfield exit in the new year.
Alves is one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe and scored an incredible seven times for Dutch club Heerenveen on Sunday in their 9-0 victory over Eredivisie rivals Heracles Almelo.

Well the rumours are Man U are also interested in him amongst others so Liverpool will have a fight on their hands to sign him methinks!
I don't think he'll end up in Man Utd. Why? Cause i think the signing of Tevez is Utd's big signing this season. I doubt they'll buy another striker.
Liverpool needs a quality striker and will spend a lot of money in getting one, most likely Afonso Alves.

We have 3 quality strikers in Torres,Voronin and Kuyt.
Crouch is capable also on his day.
We dont need another striker, we need another good midfielder and another stalwart defender in the same vein as Hyppia to replace him when he leaves.

Yeh you're right, my bad. Anyway I think Afonso Alves is better then both Kuyt and Voronin.
Afonso Alves - Torres that would be something huh? ;)

well to be fair, I havent heard of him before, but I had never heard of Voronin or Kuyt before they joined us so he could be a great player in hindsight.

And have you seen how many goals we've scored this season? Even after we signed Tevez everyone though another striker would come in after we lost Smith and Rossi as well as Ole retiring so I'm pretty sure another one will come in. Maybe not in Jan but certainly by the summer. Saha is too prone to injury. It only takes one striker getting injured for us to be in serious trouble. Fraizer Campbell from the reserves has been on the bench more than once this season!
What's up with the new signing Anderson? He hasen't played a second right? I guess he's too busy with having fun with some hookers together with Ronaldo and Nani.
Nah but seriously, I understand the situation Gav and a new striker wouldn't hurt.

He has played. He played in the Carling Cup game against Coventry in which Fergie played all the kids and we lost 2-0  He came on against Wigan as well at the end of the First Half and setup a goal. He played pretty well considering the Coventry game. He'll be eased in gradually. Man U don't have a good history with Brazillian players settling in. He plays in midfield though so unlike he'll be used as a forward although he can play there.

I don't think Liverpool need another striker. What Liverpool badly need is creativity. Apart from the Derby game, Ryan Babel hasn't really fired yet. I think of the latest signings, Yossi Benayoun has been the most effective because he brings much needed creativity and the ability to beat a man. Yet Benitez infuriatingly has him in and out of the side. Players need to build up rhythm and form. I would have liked to see someone like Ribery or Malouda at Liverpool, but yet again I suppose it comes down to our transfer power.
