Portuguese Cup winners Sporting Clube de Portugal claimed their sixth Super Cup after a 1-0 win against champions FC Porto on Saturday night in Leiria.
Post rattled
The game burst into life when Porto winger Ricardo Quaresma struck the post twice in the 18th and 19th minutes, although the second attempt would not have counted as Adriano had strayed into an offside position. Most of the danger in the first half came at set-piece situations but with no clear chances to score the match remained level at half-time.
Izmailov winner
The crowd of nearly 22,000 at the Municipal Dr. Magalhães Pessoa saw Porto dominate but they were unable to break the deadlock. They were made to pay after 75 minutes when Marat Izmailov fired in a 25 metre effort to give Sporting the lead - his first goal in a Lions shirt. Przemyslaw Kazmierczak later strucked the post as Porto risked everything to try and find an equaliser but they were unable to stop Sporting stretching their unbeaten run to 25 matches since their home loss against FC Spartak Moskva in UEFA Champions League group stage on 5 December 2006.
