Japan Coach: 2010 Is Priority - Not Asian Cup
Japanese coach Ivica Osim has declared that the Asian Cup is not his main priority; the Bosnian is looking three years down the line –the 2010 World Cup.
zoom - galleria The defending champions drew 1-1 with Qatar in their opening Group B game and face UAE in a crucial match on Friday evening.
"If Japan were to win a third straight title, it would be nice, but it is not a priority," Osim told the Daily Yomuiri.
"There are more important things, and by that I mean the World Cup qualifiers. The torch must be passed on and we must have a stronger team in [three] years' time.
"And the Asian Cup is very important for that, gaining the experience to play in various conditions that we are not used to.
"But it is not the most important thing to Japan. If the terms of the job were that I had to win the Asian Cup for Japan's third time, then I would never have signed on."
told you guys!

I have a feeling that Osim is gilding the lily somewhat. He clearly does value the Asian Cup, if his blowup at the players after the first game is anything to go by. I get the impression that he likes to downplay Japan's chances for strategic reasons. When asked about the likelihood of Japan beating Vietnam, he was non-commital, adding that he didn't want to motivate the other team by saying that they(Japan) would win.

Im sure he does value the asian cup as well, ut i think he is saying that getting to the world cup is more important;
he has already repeatedly statedt that when the JFA signed him, they agreed that the Asian Cup would not take priority...and Osim has always done as he pleases really.

you're coach is only saying he doesn't care about the asian cup to take pressure off himself and the team, if they didn't care why even show up!, maybe there worried they will lose 3-1 again?.

Honestly, Toke, do you really want a spelling and a history lesson? How about just sticking to football, where you have a pretty good command of matters.

Why is the Asian Cup being played this year?I thought it would be 2008,inline with the Euro championships.
As regards Japan,i think they hit there peak in 2004.In 2002 they had a team with future potential in 2004 they were the best Asian team,at 2006 they were very ordinary.I was very disappointed with the performances at the WC.
With a negative coach like Osim at the helm i don't see them doing anything in WC2010.The one thing that struck me at 2006 with the Japanese was that they didn't play with any pace or spirit,something they had in abundance on there WC debut in 98.
