The glamour club of Australian football is set to face the biggest challenge of its short history.
Sydney FC will meet J-League champions the Urawa Reds in a do-or-die Asian Champions League clash in Japan on Wednesday.
After a disappointing 2-2 draw at home against the Reds in March, the inaugural Hyundai A-League premiers must win the return bout to advance to the quarter-finals.
But coach Branko Culina says the match is the biggest challenge the club has faced in its short history.
"To qualify for the last stage of the Asian Champions League in your first season would be an absolutely enormous achievement," he said.
Having recently taken over the coaching duties, the meticulous Culina is happy with his team's progression but admits the AFC Champions League has possibly come too early for the club.
"(I'm) delighted where we are at the moment but as I said earlier we know that we've got a team that's quite capable of doing a lot better."
"What we have to have is to get the club to have that killer instinct where we can destroy teams."
"We're trying to create a winning culture and that's probably been a little disappointing in some of the games in the Asian Champions League … we had a chance to win all of them."
"If we can pick up one or two of the players that we're aiming to, particularly a marquee player, this could be a team that could probably set new standards."
Sydney was rarely threatened in a comfortable 2-0 victory over Malaysia in Wednesday night's friendly while an out-of-sorts Urawa Reds have only managed a draw in each of their four previous J-League fixtures.
The must-win scenario may suit Sydney's attacking brand of football while Culina believes the home side will have more pressure knowing a draw at home is enough to stay alive.
"For us it's going to be a wonderful opportunity to go out and express ourselves and hopefully achieve a result that will do the club and country proud," said Culina.
All 19 players eligible for the AFC Champions League tournament will make the trip, including defender Robbie Middleby who is suspended having received his second yellow card for the tournament against Shanghai Shenhua.
Sydney's three Olyroos have returned unscathed after a 3-1 win against Iran on Wednesday night; the main concern was for Mark Milligan who has been battling a back injury, but the talented midfielder is fit to play.
I bidded 2-1 as well but the teams drew..
poor perfomance by Sydney

sydney had no depth at all, rudan had to go upfront as a striker thats how low on troops we were, i think that the next marque player should be a striker as we dont have a good striker and sydney burried themselves by not winning 2 weeks ago and loosing in indonesia and the drop ball by clint bolton against urawa in sydney , we had every chance to go through and blew it .
i also would just like to point out that i think its pathetic that the winner and runner up in the league go into the following CL, now melbourne was the best team by far this season and yet have to wait till next year which by then they might not be in form or not as good , the ffa have to somehow change the way it is as it is not fair to melbourne who tore teams apart and would of really had a go in the cl, now dont get me wrong sydney done really well aswell and under cullina i can see them winning the a-league next season but i just hope that we can have our aussie teams playing in the CL when they are in good form and have had a good season and have just won the a-league and are full of confidence, where as for example if melbourne or adelaide, next years CL teams , have a really bad campaign in the a-league and finish last or second last they are still in the CL which is so stupid as you want the best teams to represent australia not the best teams the year before, something has to be done il stop writing now as i have gone on with this a bit to much, but hopefully you all can see my point
