Being from Argentina as I am you can hardly expect an imparcial opinion from me, but.....I talked about this tons of times with my friends, some brazilian friends also, and i have come to a conclusion. Pele won 3 WC, but played among incredible players like garrincha and others. Maradona won only 1, and a sub-championship. In 86 he had a very good team (Valdano, Enrique, Burruchaga, etc.) but they weren't huge stars. In 90 he played injured and had only Cannigia for company, and he got close. BUT, maradona played in Europe and won 2 scudettos and a UEFA Cup BY HIMSELF. PELE NEVER GOT OUT OF BRAZIL (except to make a few bucks in the US at Cosmos) And they also played in different times. In Pele times (i've seen videos) the marking was a joke compared to what defenders and midfielders to stop you do nowadays or even in Diego's time. There's a thing though, I''VE NEVER SAW ENOUGH OF PELE (I'M ONLY 22) to be a fair judge.

Mardona was earlier than the internet, but he is the one who is still fresh in the minds of anyone 30 or younger. Correct?? An 18 year old today was glorifying Maradona as a 7 year old in th 1990 World Cup. You think that has no bearing? Couple that with the pervasiveness of TV versus the 50's and 60's, world wide media etc....you know it makes sense.

About Pele not playing in Europe. Doesn't wash with me. Europe is a vastly superior continent for club football...NOW...but that wasn't always the case.

I remember in 81 when Flamengo played Liverpool in the Intercontinental Club Cup. Liverpool were of course going to dominate but ended up being crushed 3-0. Why:

Raul, Leandro, Mozer, Junior, Marinho, Amdrade, Tita, Adilio, Zico, Lice, Nunes.

Looks like 10 Brazilian internationals on one team to me. What team in Europe could come close to comparing today (besides corrupt Real)??

When one looks at the overall record in the competition:

...it is obvious where the dominance in that particular competition comes from until money started getting out of hand in Europe 7-8 years ago (European teams having won the last 6).

Couple that with the fact two Brazilian teams ended up in the final of the first World Club Championship despite all the 'stars' playing in Europe....your argument gets thin.

My point is when a player is derided for ONLY having played in a South American league and not on any great European clubs, you can't use todays standards to make that comparisson as they were not applicable for four decades. The only basis we have for comparing show that argument just doesn't stand up until fairly recently i.e. 92/93 onwards.

You make a valid point about the two playing in different times, but that is also something I would submit to you as well. You can only judge someone within their own confines. What if Pele had the benefit of better dietary knowledge, better training techniques, balls designed to fly further and curve sharper, better boots, better playing surfaces.........you just don't know what a difference these things could have made to him, or how hampered Maradona would have been playing within 60's standards... so you HAVE to see how they performed amongst their contemporaries.

Maradona was the best by far for a spell (I would say 8 years at the pinnacle), but still within the model, the mold, Pele created wheras Pele was at the top of his game for 18 years before retiring and then coming out for the Cosmos. He scored 50 goals in his last season!!!! (not to mention the 3 100+ seasons he had). By comparrison Maradona was a flash in the pan.

I am defenetely for Pele. Yes we can se excelent goals of Maradona in the TV now. But Pele scored much more then Maradona did. Did you ever see a film of Pele. I've seen only one, but not only once. And it was always the same one. As I said Pele scored also better goals and more goals then Maradona. Well we must shure say, also a tipe of football changed from the time Pele or Maradona did play.

You do make a valid point, though Pele played in a time where soccer was much more relaxed, i think in Diego's time it was much tougher, not meaning the violence of the play (which was at its top, check out games from England 66 and Chile 62) but the attention and perseverance of the marking. Pele played in a time where the formations were ridiculous by today standards (3-3-4, even earlier 2-3-5), where offensive soccer was played (that should have contributed to pele's goal record, which by the way is not quite realistic, they count goals he scored in youth divisions, and some others i dont know about) and marking was left behind, they were really a joke.

The record of intercontinental matches look likes a statement in itself, but you have take in consideration that those are Champion vs. Champion of the different confederacies (doesn't include the whole leagues) games. You yourself mentioned a Flamengo team that was filled with brazilian internationals. I mean, look at Brazil, the most winning team in history of WCs, that talks about the quality of its players in one team, but that doesn't form the whole league and show the exigence of it. It does set a pattern but you have to think that those games (1 game now, 2 games home and visitor before) does not show how any of those teams would have done in a differents leagues throught the whole season. I know, cause argentininian teams had won as you posted 7 titles, but i don't think you could compare arg league to europe's great leagues historically.

Guys, I actually think it's hard to compare players from different times, but consider this: Pele played in a time before TV, so there aren't as many of his goals on video. So, Maradona benefits from this, as his achievements were well documented. Did the teams in Pele's time play in less defensive tactics? Yes, but even his contemporaries were stunned by the fact that he WASN'T just a great attacking midfielder. Or just a superb striker. That's just it: Pele was amazing because he did EVERYTHING in the game with EXCELLENCE. He was great at tackling, marking, long-passing, heading, finishing, shooting from long distances, marking... he once played as a GOALIE and was brilliant, defending a penalty and keeping a clean sheet against a strong opponent (Palmeiras, with a couple of National players)who had one more man on the pitch! On that match, his team won. With a goal PELÉ scored, before his team's goalie was sent of...
With all due respect to Diego, picture this: Would YOU like to have on your team a player who did EVERYTHING superbly? Who wouldn't? Diego was a genius, world-class ATTACKER. Pele was the king (a nickname he got when he was SEVENTEEN, whe it became clear he was one-of-a-kind).

again I have to say those votes were skewed. Internet = relatively young. As stated before younger people grew up with Maradona at the helm through the budding of mass media. Who do you think they would vote for? I also believe that the other poll voting for Pele was taken through the magazine subscribers, not just the 'untouchable FIFA' (trust me I have my gripes with them)

Interestingly, I was too young to enjoy Pele myself (though I saw him once as a child), yet I did what most people who discount him have not done i.e. sat down and watched him in full matches on tape. Until I KNOW everyone (at least most) people who claim Maradona as the best have actually sat down and watched a host of full length Pele matches (which VERY few of them can honestly say they have) then I can't in all honesty accept their claims as valid as they don't really have anything to compare it to. It's akin to saying 'I prefer chocolate ice cream over vanilla', while eating the chocolate and only looking at the the vanilla. You can't truly know.

Once you do see Pele in action, sublime my friends, sublime.

What are you talking about? Pelé played from (roughly) 1956-1974, Zico (again, roughly) from 1978-1990.

They most definitely aren't the same level, Pelé is better than anyone else, Maradona is WAY better than Zico.

What does the "close age" thing mean?

And the discussion about positions must be getting lost in the translation... Pele, like Zico and Maradona, was an offensive midfielder who could play in attack.

About who scored more, I think style influences this: Pelé scored loads of goals because of his style: He would get the ball and dribble anyone who stood between him and the goal. Maradona also did that, Zico didn't that often.

And Pelé was the best, not simply because of his more-than-thousand-goals, but because he was excellent in EVERY soccer skill known. He was the best because he was superb at heading, tackling, shooting, passing, defending, finishing, you name it. That's why he's in a class of his own.

As I said before, maybe this century someone else will be born with the same skill. Pelé was the best athlete in the last century - no contest, and that title wasn't given by Brazilians, but by Europeans.

I think that a 19 year old can watch Marodona play and Pele and than decide who he likes best.
It depends also the type of soccer you like or just who you prefer.
They are both great no doubt, still personally after seeing Pele goals and Maradona goals and drbbling, I prefer Maradona. Also, Helenio Herrera preffered Di Stefano to Pele, so it really depends.
And plus there were many good players only they are not as famous as this 2 cuz they are in different position and also they didnt score as much, but does any of you know Falcao? or Rivera?

I know Falcão, I have had the privilege of watching him play personally. It was in the very early '80s (or late '70s, I dunno), a match between Falcão's Internacional and Zico's Flamengo, a great game. Falcão was a superb midfielder, one of the finest footballers I have ever seen, classic and domineering on the pitch, with a keen eye for possible spaces. A fuoriclasse in the purest form.

But I have also seen Pelé playing in many films, and I realize he has no equals. Maradona is the second best player ever - but when you consider that the number one is Pelé, it's clear that there is NO shame in being number 2.

not really a tough question because pele scored around 1000 goals in his career. that's unbelievable however as one pointed out, he never played in italy. he only limited himself to the brasilian league and the US where to say that defending was often left on the backburner would be the understatement of the year. maradona on the other hand proved his worth in italy and was the catalyst in 1986 when argentina lifted the WC. having said that, he was also a cheating son of a b!tch. when the brother of one diego armando openly admits that pele was better --- i think the answer is obvious.

1. Pele played during the years when you could walk through the field an score a goal. Maradona played during the brutal fotball. The defenders didn't go for the ball, the took the player instead, and Maradona survived and made succes.

2. Maradona won the World Cup to Argentina by himself. Pele always had extrodinary player among him.

Wrong, wrong, WRONG! I think you will find that it was pretty brutal in the 60s and 70s. Less protection was given to the forward then. The only reason Pele 'walked' through the defence was ability. Also, you will find from footage that Pele had to protect himself because in many cases the referee did not.

Those who believe Maradona was the best because they've seen him but not Pelé, or because he played in Europe, don't look like they're accepting contrary arguments. Those who think Pelé was more complete and achieved more are grounded in statistics and history, and won't budge either. What's the difference, really? Who cares?

The Argentinians are more passionate about El Pibe than most Brazilians are about Pelé - IMO because Pelé is Brazilian and topping him is a matter of national pride or something. So when there was an Internet poll about who was the "player of the century", there was a nationalwide drive in Argentina where everyone went to that site to vote, and told their friends to do the same, "for Diego". Meanwhile, in Brazil nobody knew about that internet poll, and those who knew didn't actually care enough to spread the word, as we don't think there's anything to argue: Pelé is the best, period. He scored more goals, achieved more, won more titles, and was a more technically complete player.

This argument is getting old, guys. And it's going nowhere.

Maradona is the best. Did you ever see Pele cry, becouse of football. Did you ever see Pele scoring a crucial goal with his hand? Maradona left everything he had on soccer field. Pele did not. The passion Maradona has, Pele wont ever have. Soccer is not just scoring goals, beside if you compare creativity between two of them, you get the picture. Maradona is also modest and fair, that is why he had and has so much problems in his life. He belived everyone, but nobody really care much about him, he didnt have rigt friends....But when he was on soccerfield he was like a soccer-angel (i wont say god) and in my opinion there was no soccer before him, and there is no soccer after him. it is just imitation of soccer.

i've seen maradona play on a number of occasions live but there's no question pele is the best. atleast he didn't have to resort to using his hands 60% of the time. that sort of cheating just depreciates his credibility in my estimation.

i was not lucky enough to watch pele playing live, i know him just for videos.
regretably for all the pele fans maradona played in the tv era, and every football fan have seen at least some of his masterpieces, like both goals against england in the 86, and belgium in the same WC, houndreds in napoli, etc.

His 10 years in Napoli was the golden years for that club. Now its in the 2nd or 3rd division. And neither did it have anything worthwhile to tell before his arrival. The Serie A at that time was the best league in the world. And he was the king there.....el Rey de Napoli.

I don't have to talk about his shrewdness in midfiled ask the Brazillians how they felt in 1990. The 1990 2nd round may read Argentina 1 Brazil 0. But it was a match were people like me sat on the sofa hands cletched hoping that argentina would atleast get the ball as Careca & Co launched a series of attacks one after the other, kept at bay only by Goycochea and the crossbar !!!! It was then the maestro took up the ball in midfield and embarked on a run the way he did 4 years back but the Brazillian defence decided to take on him. Time to give Maradona the ultimate accolade



So Diego Armando Maradona has played his last game of football. The curtain has come down on the career of one of the beautiful games' most talented and controversial stars, and once the dust has settled will follow the inevitable question of where he stands amongst the legends of the game. In my opinion, he stands head and shoulders above them all.

It is maybe pointless to choose one player from the entire history of world football as the best ever, but if asked I would have to say the boy from the slums of Buenos Aires with the magic in his feet. Basketball has Michael Jordan, boxing has Muhammad Ali, and where football is concerned you are constantly told that Pele was the best ever. It is high time for a revised view.

Whenever the question of who was the greatest is raised, by and large it always comes down to a straight choice between Pele and Maradona, a debate enriched by the fact that they plainly do not like each other very much. Johann Cruyff is generally regarded as the best player ever to come out of Europe, but he never won a World Cup, and this always counts against him. The same is true for Ferenc Puskas, who also suffers at the hands of western writers for being from unfashionable, eastern European Hungary. Although he won 5 European Cups Alfredo di Stefano is overlooked as he never even played at a World Cup. The same applies to George Best, the finest player ever born in the British Isles but whose haul of medals does not match the talent he once had. You can sift through the rest - Platini, Eusebio, Van Basten, Charlton, Moore etc but deep down I think we all know they are not on the same plateau as Maradona and Pele.

Often the case in favour of Pele is two fold - he scored more goals, he won more World Cups. Whilst scoring 1,000 plus goals is very impressive, most of those were in friendlies or exhibitions, and he began and finished his career in an era where goals were more frequent than the defensive era Diego played in.

It is true to say that Pele was on the winning side in more World Cups, but he owes a great deal of this to the players around him. He would never have exploded onto the scene in the manner he did in 1958 were he not surrounded by Didi, Vava, Gylmar, Mario Zagallo and most specifically Garrincha. When Pele limped out of the 1962 tournament in Chile it was Garrincha who picked up the pieces and guided Brazil to a victory many thought was not possible once Pele was gone. I don't think I'm alone in ranking Garrincha at the very least on a par with Pele as a footballer.

In 1966 Pele took a bit of a battering against Portugal as Brazil meekly went out in the first round. At the time he vowed never to play in another World Cup, but returned in 1970 as part of the greatest attacking set-up of all time. He had a good tournament, but several things were in his favour, especially the weather, so scorching that even in those bygone days of acres of space all over the pitch, the opposition, specifically European teams Czechoslovakia, Romania, England and Italy were less willing to chase and close down. All the time in the world can make all the difference.

Yet again he was surrounded by players who would go on to become icons of the modern game. He was outscored by Jairzinho and showed no more or less creativity than Rivelino, Tostao or Gerson. Even without Pele I am certain that team would still have won the World Cup.

Maradona has a far more colourful World Cup history. Not selected in 1978, sent off as Argentina fell apart against Brazil in 1982, his ultimate triumph came in 1986 in Mexico where he lead a team that would have been nowhere without him to victory, which still stands as the greatest individual performance by any player in the World Cup ever. During the tournament he also scored two of the best goals ever seen. This is the cornerstone of the argument in favour of Maradona. He led a team of nine thugs, himself and Caniggia to the final again in 1990, and in 1994 was sent home in disgrace after testing positive for ephedrine, when it looked as if he may inspire them to glory again.

If we take the debate out of the World Cup arena and on to club careers, the argument favours Maradona even more. Pele spent his entire career in the relative comfort zone of the Sao Paolo state championship and the NASL in America, whereas Maradona went to the toughest league in the world, to unfashionable Napoli, and won two titles, the Italian Cup and the UEFA Cup. Prior to that first title no club from the south of Italy had won the title in 75 years, and since his departure Napoli have returned to their old was of bouncing up and down from Serie A and Serie B. This is without mentioning his early career for Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors, and also his time at Barcelona.

Pele is the establishment figure, the darling of FIFA, the one you are told to believe is the best player ever, but this just isn't true. Pele was one of many pioneers, but Maradona is the master of the modern game. The game is faster, harder, more defensive now. People often discount any pre- second world war players in the best ever lists - why? Because that game has gone, and so has the one Pele dominated. FIFA cannot stand Maradona because of the drug abuse, the constant controversy, his willingness to point out the many faults in their organisation and the game in general. No one is asking for him to be canonised, merely respected as the best in his field. Certainly the rest of the world seems to think so, voting him the greatest player of the twentieth century in an internet poll organised by FIFA, leading to a farcical situation at last year's FIFA gala of an award being invented for Pele out of thin air.

I would like to conclude this by saying this article is not designed to be a criticism of Pele- I'd swop my skills for his in an instant. However if we are debating who was the greatest player of all time, it isn't really a contest. Until someone better comes along and blows us away with his skills, Diego Armando Maradona is the greatest football player of all time - print that in stone and don't ever forget it.

He won the world cup for clubs final 2 times (against Juventus 62 and Benfica 63). With Brazil he scored as many goals/matches as he did with Santos, it didn't matter what defense he played against, no one could stop him. Besides that, who said european clubs were better than Brazilian clubs when Pelé played football (all the great Brazilian players in that time played in Brazil)?

4:Maradonna was a better dribbler than Pelé was.
I would agree that Maradonna was a better dribbler than Pelé, but Pelé was more complete as a player and he was much more efficicient than Maradonna, Pelé would rather pass the ball than dribble if someone was better positioned than himself. Another fact is that there are few pictures of amazing Pelé numbers, we only have words about some fantasitic goals he scored with Santos, while we have all seen Maradonna's greatest moments and numbers. Pelé could also switch from running past the defense to dribbling the players, maradonna didn't possesed a speed even close to Pelé's. Another remarkable thing about Pelé is that he could play both as playmaker and striker in the same time. He was so complete that he even played as goalie for Santos 3 times and no one ever scored against him. Overall Maradonna probably was slightly more technical than Pelé, but not even close to as complete as "O rei".

two moments we'll remember
It sounds like a lie that 2 of the most remembered numbers from Pelé didn't result with a goal. Both occured in the same match, the classic 1970 world cup semi-final between Brazil and Uruguay, which did end 3-1 to Brazil. Uruguay took the lead early in the match and memories from the final 1950, when Uruguay beat Brazil were coming back to the Brazilians. Later Brazil would win the match, but what will be remembered from this match would be two numbers from "O rei" which didn't end with a goal.

One of them was a body dribble against the goalie, he just ran around the goalie leitting the ball go around the goalie in the other side, without even touching the ball, but then he missed the open goal!
What most people don't know is that Pelé had already scored a goal simular to this 8 years before this game!

Another classic Pelé moment was when he in this match watched that the goalie was positioned a good distance from the goal, so the genius Pelé shot the ball with only one touch directly after receiving the ball, from the middle of the arena, but he missed the goal with less than a meter

Never saw Pele in action but I did watch Maradona when I was a kid and he was phenomenal. What he did with the ball defied belief to which no one this day can match. He also sparked a revolution at Napoli with Careca which led them right to the top of Italian and European football.

I never thought that Maradona looked Italian. He has a very distinctive Hispanic look. If he has any Italian blood, I doubt it is 100 %.
