Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo has been named both PFA Player and Young Player of the Year.

The Portuguese winger was widely expected to take the main award and his remarkable season continued as he scooped both awards on Sunday evening at the Grosvenor House Hotel.

Ronaldo becomes only the second player in history to achieve the remarkable feat, the other being Sky Sports' own Andy Gray - who won both awards some 30 years ago in 1977.

Ronaldo held off competition from Chelsea's Didier Drogba in second and team-mate Paul Scholes - who came third - to take the main award. Steven Gerrard, Ryan Giggs, and Cesc Fabregas were also in the running.

Ronaldo succeeds Gerrard and is the first United player to take the Player of the Year prize since Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2000.

In contrast, it is the third year in succession that a United player has taken the Young Player of the Year award - with team-mate Wayne Rooney winning the honour in 2005 and 2006.

Rooney was up for the award again, but he was beaten by Ronaldo as he also held off competition from Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), who came second, and Aaron Lennon (Tottenham Hotspur) in third.

Micah Richards (Manchester City) and Kevin Doyle (Reading) were also up for the award.

The 22-year-old was also named in the Premiership Team of the Year - one of eight United players.

A stunning result for the lad. first player to scoop both awards since 1977.

I watched the awards and he was quite amusing actually. He's a smart guy and although it's no easy to understand everything that is said to him he has very good English for such a young lad. He did well to answer the usual stupid questions. He was asked what his favourite part of the season had been so far. He said he thinks the best is yet to come

no surprise there really. drogba was good but not in the same way. after watching the game today its obvious he is probably the best in teh world. it was nice to compare him to the other person in the running for that position in my mind, Kaka.

I know Andy Gray won both the awards in '77 but not sure about winning the Football Writers and Fans favourite though?

Definetely deserved awards, has been fantastic the entire season and greatly contributed to Man U's fantastic form and place on the table.

Even more noteworthy is his amount of goals as an attacking midfielder in the EPL. If he keeps continueing this line and doesn't let the succes get to his head, he can become the best of the world in a couple of years ( he's among the best now already ofcourse ).

You told me what? You mean that Ronaldo became Player of the Year? Well he was the favourite so the majority of people thought so too. I just pointed out a few players could have won it. Because these things are decided by the players in the Premiership it can go either way. As a player you can't vote for players in the same team as you so you have to vote for a player in another team. There are a lot of players who aren't keen on Ron and my one worry was that the majority would vote for someone else just so Ronaldo didn't get the vote

Well you can't have been 100% because you would have to have fixed the vote to be 100%

I was still 100% sure that he would win it and no i wasn't involved in the voting fixtures

Don't take it literary just take it for what it is a obvious choice. Anyone else getting this award would be pure BS. :)

ronaldo is a flopping diving con fish and deserves a greek cock up his ass, that guy has no skills and does the same step over shit over and over and over. and always cons the stupid english refs into calling a penalty on a ***king porkchop diving ugly face. Plus the dirty fag has to stop midway in a penalty kick to score a ***king goal, what a skilless , retarded , dumb porkchop.

oh it went to his head years ago. there is no stopping that. his ego is only second to mine. lets just hope that he keeps playing well and the fnas keep booing and give him confidence.
