Asian clubs raid stars

THE Asian threat is now real with cashed-up clubs from the Orient already targeting A-League players and prepared to pay as much as $500,000 a year.
A-League-based Socceroos Jade North, Nick Carle and Archie Thompson were approached by agents after the win over China in Guangzhou last week while The Daily Telegraph understands that at least three Sydney FC players have received offers from Japan.
David Carney and Mark Milligan have been the standouts thus far and appear to be the most attractive options for rich Asian clubs.
It is also believed that there is strong interest in Asia for Sydney FC coach Branko Culina, who is only contracted for the Asian Champions League campaign at the moment.
North has not received a concrete offer but the non-contracted Newcastle Jets defender is favouring a move to China as he's desperate to remain in contention for July's Asian Cup by playing.
Attacker Ryan Griffiths has already joined Chinese club Liaoning on loan from Rapid Bucharest for six months.
"The money here is what you can earn in five years in the A-League and I'm sure that's in the back of the players' minds to come here for a year or two," Griffiths said.
Jets teammate Carle and Melbourne Victory super-striker Thompson are contracted to their A-League clubs and set to stay put.
