Sir Alex Ferguson may have his hands full as Manchester United step up their pursuit of an unprecedented second treble, but the manager is already planning enthusiastically for next season.

Ajax are bracing themselves for a bid from United for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, their prolific young striker, who Ferguson is understood to have identified as one of his main summer targets along with Owen Hargreaves, the Bayern Munich and England midfield player, and Nani, the Sporting Lisbon winger.

Huntelaar has established himself as the new golden boy of Dutch football since failing to make the grade at PSV Eindhoven and has already drawn favourable comparisons to Ruud van Nistelrooy, the former United striker.

While Ajax are loath to lose Huntelaar, the clamour for the 23-year-old forward’s signature is such that John Jaakke, the club’s chairman, is thought to be confident of being able to name his price for the player, who would cost at least double the £6.8 million Ajax paid SC Heerenveen for his services just over a year ago, and possibly much more.

Ferguson is believed to retain a serious interest in Fernando Torres, the highly rated Atlético Madrid and Spain forward, although he would come at a far higher premium than Huntelaar.

Torres recently signed a new deal with Atlético that ties him to the club until 2009, but while the escape clause in the 23-year-old’s contract was reduced from £41.4 million to about £27 million as part of the agreement, that price may still prove too prohibitive for United, who are expected to spend about half of their estimated £40 million transfer budget on Hargreaves.

Huntelaar cost Heerenveen just £70,000 when he joined the club in 2004 after turning down the offer of a new contract with PSV, where he struggled to make much of an impact.

In his first season at Heerenveen, Huntelaar scored 20 goals in 38 appearances and followed that up with 21 goals in as many games during the first half of the 2005-06 campaign before Ajax came calling. He finished the season with a staggering 45 goals in 46 matches and has looked equally impressive this term, scoring 28 times in all competitions.

Despite being in Marco van Basten’s preliminary Holland squad for last year’s World Cup finals, Huntelaar did not travel to Germany but he has impressed for the national team since, scoring twice in the 4-1 win over Ireland last August.

Ferguson has already sent scouts to watch Huntelaar, most recently in Ajax’s 4-1 win over FC Twente just under three weeks ago, when the striker scored a hat-trick.

The United manager has been encouraged by the apparent ability of Dutch players to adapt quickly to the demands of the Barclays Premiership, a quality that may make Huntelaar seem like less of a gamble than Torres, whose style is more suited to the Continent.

Of more immediate concern to United, however, is the Premiership game at home to Blackburn Rovers tomorrow, when victory would open up a nine-point gap at the top, if only for a couple of hours with Chelsea not playing until later in the day against Watford.

While United are still in contention to win the FA Cup and Champions League, Park Ji Sung, the midfield player, wants to help to ensure that the Premiership title returns to Old Trafford after a four-year absence.

“It is possible for us to get the results to succeed in all competitions,” the South Korean said. “But my No 1 target is the Premier League.”

Park did the double of league and cup with PSV in the Netherlands and he believes the experience will hold him in good stead as United’s season enters its critical phase. “I have had a similar experience in the Netherlands,” he said.

“Even if we have bad results, we have to bounce back quickly and concentrate on the next game.”

I really hope this won't go through, as Huntelaar has been a tremendous signing for Ajax, leading the competition's goal scoring table by a mile last year.

He was 1st or 2nd last season with most goals in the world, for such a young striker that's quite a performance.

He's a fantastic striker, has alot of potential to grow even bigger. In a partnership with Rooney he'd do amazing as well as both are two very different, yet complete strikers.

Although if he would leave Ajax, I'd love to see him at my second favourite club and that ofcourse would be Manchester United.
I said it before the season started that Huntelaar would be an excellent replacement for Van Nistelrooy, similliar play, but still different in their own ways.

Mixed feelings about this one, don't want to see him leave Ajax as he's probably the best Dutch striker we could wish for, but on another note he would only grow bigger, more experienced and a pride for Dutch football if he's playing at Man Utd.

I'll be following the progress of this deal closely, would definetely be a good signing by Man Utd.

Well Fergie doesn't disclose his targets so this is just speculation at the moment but I've had my eye on the kids for a season or so. We do need a prolific striker. Despite goals from all round the team we don't have a striker with the killer touch that RVN has. I doubt any of our strikers will go above 20 goals this season and we need someone who can. I don't think Saha is a player who will ever do that and the same goes for Smith. Ole was never that sort of player but added a lot more to the team (and still does when he's fit). Rooney adds a lot to the team and has never been a prolific striker so we do need someone else.

Exactly Gav, Man Utd need that kind of striker and that's what Huntelaar truly is, in some aspects even better than RVN since he can play good football along, isn't that static and still has the potential to be even greater.

That doesn't take away RVN is still a class higher, but that's beside the point. Ole is simply to old, Saha simply isn't that kind of striker like you say and Smith isn't a true striker either.

This could honestly be a golden duo if you put the facts together, both Rooney and Huntelaar are very young, have amazing ability 'already', like I also said before I think they'd do well together since they both are striker, but very different ones in the finishing, football and other factors.

Like I said, he'll be an amazing asset to Ajax for the CL next year as we have a team that can really finish high next year. But for Huntelaar's future and seeing a great Dutch striker at a fantastic English club makes it alot easier to deal with, I'd hate to see him go to Chelsea ( as it would kill his talent I think ) so, in that point of view I'm glad if it would go through.

Oh well, like you say Gav, just speculation until something substansive comes out of it. But it would be a great signing by Man Utd, without a doubt.

Huntelaar has been a target for about 2 years now.

We couldn't get Torres -
We won't bid for Villa -
Let's get another Dutchman.

I think the last one worked out quite nicely for awhile...agreed?

i think that he would complement rooney as well. rooney is very good at setting up for goal hunters like RVN and Huntelaar. i would rather have him than torres now as we could also afford some other players. and it would offset the ridiculous amount that we are going to pay for Hargreaves.

I don't see why Man Utd want Hargreaves, tbh.

There are alot of better players out there who play that position, but I suppose since he's English he would be a 'signing' .

If they don't offer Bayern to much I'm OK with it, but I don't see him as a reinforment.

But a player like Huntelaar they definetely need one, hopefully they'll get a good striker fist before getting Owen.

I also can't see the huge attraction of signing Hargreaves. Prior to a couple of good games at the World Cup everyone in Britain thought he was crap. Ferguson's already got Scholes, Carrick, Fletcher, O'Shea and that diddy Richardson - so £20 million for OH seems a bit illogical. He is the greatest manager in the world I suppose, sohe knows best.

Huntelaar would be a good signing though. I was surprised that everyone seemed desperate to sign Kuyt and yet ignored the top goalscorer. Ajax fans shouldn't worry, though, Man Utd always get conned into paying ridiculous money for players. Carrick for example. £18.6 million

I can see the huge attraction of Hargreaves to be honest. We don't have a player than can break up play. a Defensive midfeilder like Keano. Carrick is a great player but he isn't a player like Hargreaves or Keano he's a more attacking player. A player like hargreaves can track players and break up play to allow players like Scholes or Carrick to go forward and that's what Fergie wants to recapture.

Whether Hargreaves can be successful at that remains to be seen but I think he'll be a success. He's a player that works very hard for the team and will fit in perfectly at Utd. If you saw the game against Roma you may have noticed that that role was given to fletcher even though it isn't his usual sort of role and he did it really well. Carrick was playing the Scholes role which is the role he's best at.
