Originally, L.A. was going to play its opening game at home against Chivas de Guadalajara on July 24 and then host Pachuca five days later on July 28. Instead, the Galaxy will now open their SuperLiga campaign on Tuesday, July 24 against Pachuca at 8 p.m. at The Home Depot Center. Then, on Saturday, July 28, the Galaxy will host Chivas de Guadalajara at 7 p.m.

Los Angeles Police Chief William J. Bratton said today that some actions taken by officers trying to clear a crowd of marchers at MacArthur Park were "inappropriate" and that he has launched two investigations.

The chief told KNX-AM (1070) that he reviewed the videotapes showing officers using batons and rubber bullets to disperse crowds -- including TV news reporters -- and said "quite frankly, I was disturbed at what I saw."

"Some of the officers' action … were inappropriate in terms of use of batons and possible use of nonlethal rounds fired," he said.

The chief stressed that his impressions were based solely on viewing several videotapes shot of the confrontation and that he would withhold further judgment until the investigation was completed.

He said the police were provoked by some protesters who threw objects at them.

Bratton scheduled a 3 p.m. news conference to discuss Tuesday evening's incident after tens of thousands of jubilant protesters, seeking citizenship for undocumented immigrants, marched through the streets of Los Angeles.

In a statement, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is traveling in El Salvador, called for an "immediate and transparent review."

"Yesterday, across the country, we witnessed a day of overwhelmingly peaceful speeches and assemblies in the best American tradition. Approximately 35,000 Angelenos took to the streets to exercise their 1st Amendment rights," the mayor stated.

The mayor said he has reviewed the video of the incident and that it appeared some people threw objects at officers, who responded.

"As police personnel worked to clear the street and the park, and as the march organizers asked the crowd to disperse, members of the media and the public appear to have been caught in the exchange between the LAPD and these instigators," according to Villaraigosa.

"Any time that our law enforcement officials employ force, the public has an absolute and unqualified right to expect and demand an aggressive review of the facts. This review is already underway."

Videotapes of the confrontation between police officers and protesters drew concerns about officer conduct from members of the Police Commission, who said they will review the incident with the help of Inspector General Andre Birotte.

The City Council voted 12-0 to approve an emergency motion to ask the Police Commission and Bratton to appear before the council to report on the outcome of the investigation. Councilman Jose Huizar was among those who requested the report, saying the videotape showing officers clearing the park raised serious questions about policies and tactics.

"A lot of goodwill has been built up by the LAPD in the past. However, last night when I saw the news, I did cringe. I was disturbed to see families running from officers through the park, to see cameras hit."

Councilman Herb Wesson, who is African American, likened what he saw to the violent police response to civil rights demonstrators in the South half a century ago.

"I had a flashback to 45 years ago. It was a nightmare to me," Wesson said. "If there were dogs available I would have thought this great city of Los Angeles would have been transported to Mississippi in the 1960s."

Wesson also said he was concerned about the way the police treated the media.

"It just makes no sense to me you would go up to an individual with a camera and take that camera and throw it away," he said.

State Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez (D-Los Angeles) asked Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley to launch an independent investigation into the actions taken by the LAPD.

"On a day when peaceful residents gathered in a park to ask for justice, they got instead baton blows and rubber bullets," Nunez wrote to Cooley. "I am angry and concerned that rather than containing a few bad actors not related to yesterday's march and rally, the situation was apparently allowed to snowball into acts of unjustified force against those who were simply participating in, or reporting on, the rally."
