The built-in Windows Firewall uses the least resources, and chances are that no matter what external firewall you install, it's going to slow down your computer even more. On the other hand, the built-in firewall is not really that effective. Since hackers usually expect the built-in firewall to be on, they find a way around it.


I'm going to say that your best bet is to download a new firewall program. Zone Alarm is one of the best in the business, and for the time being.. You can get it for free. Here's the link..

Yea I agree with what Bos says. Using anything but the internal firewall is going to slow your pc down. It is also good to have a virus scanner running all the time too. Again it costs resources but is worth it to stop you getting infected.

That's a good place to look for free (legally lol) utilities. You can do a search by Firewall, Virus scanner etc and will list all the programs along with the sites reviews and also user reviews. I use AVG and my virus scanner and Zone Alarm for Firewall. Both are free.

Make sure you've done a adware/spyware scan as well. It maybe slow if you haven't done one for a while.

Depending on how secure you want to be you could try a physical firewall instead of a software one. Software firewalls will always slow your system down. You could have it so that all incoming packets enter a demilitarized zone and have it set so only the packets that you want enter your system. Everything else gets dropped. It would be expensive to set up but as long as you are prepared to give me shitloads of cash I will do it for you.

if your firewall is slowing your PC down .. you possibly have bigger problems or a really old PC (thouigh if your using Xp it cant be too old)

theres only 2 ways to protect your PC seal it in amber or install Linux ;)

been using Linux for 4 years and had 0 crashes and viruses anfd i mean in that 4 years my pc woulda been turned off maybe 10 times if that. i keep a small win 98 partition for my win games but its locked away from the net ;)

Since it started coming free with Comcast, the quality just went down hill. Yes, I still gave it a try and.. and I deliberately installed a trojan.. It took 4 days for McAfee to discover it.

It doesn't make your computer invisible at all...It merely means that your Ip address is hidden behind another at the gateway. NAT or Network Address Translation is used for this. Trust me your computer is not as "invisible" as you think it is. :rolleyes:

Look out for a product called Defender Pro...You can pick it up at Walmart. It is the best i have tried. It is relatively cheap too.

I've been surfing like this for 5 years now, and never had a problem. I don't go around and looking for trouble, therefore there's no reason for trouble to find me. I'm peaceful, and keep nothing important on my computer that hackers could use therefore.. there's no reason for me to worry that some super-hacker will hack into my computer. There's nothing to find, on the other hand.. security for small-time hackers is just too good.

Luckily, I have been fortunate and hadn't had any attacks yet. Maybe I did, but my router has blocked them.

as for Anti Virus Scanner most of them will do the job. Everyone has their own favourites! I use AVG myself. It's free has regular updates. I've used a few others and found this the best.

The only problem I have with Norton is when you want to remove it and install anything else it leave sfiles on your system that can conflict so you need to find the norton files via a registry scan but it's fine as long as you don't want to get rid of it.

I'd go for basic firewall then get AVG 7.5 both are free.

The Security suite will no doubt be a mix of firewall, antivirus and anti spam but i'm a bit suspicious of these. I got Microsoft's one suite package not long ago and it was pretty useless. It didn't pick any virus' up but I found one via an online scan, picked up very little spyware and I found a lot more when I used adware and the firewall was very basic. When I tried to re-install zone alarm I could probably becuse M$ had screwed up some of my .dll's

In my experience as a computer store owner I would recommend AVG whole heartedly. Norton is a disaster and Mcafee has to be the worst package I have ever had the misfortune to try.

One caution with AVG if you are using Vista is this, only do the priority updates or it will crash your Vista system. Do not do the recommended or optional updates.

Hey don't open that shit.

I suggest you go get a program, called HijackThis and run it. This will give you a word log file with a report of the scan (takes 2 seconds to run). Than go ahead and post your log onto a help forum, where people can check these and tell you whats bad on your system what to remove, what not to touch and how to do it.
