the winner will get 1million dollars.

and there's rumors about them trying to get a .5 libertadores spot to the winner.

also since there's talk about expanding the Club World Cup to 12 teams they're also trying to give a spot to the winner of this tourney.

el chingon

yea thats what i like about it. the rest break between seasons is longer in the summer. so doing that tournament during that time is great.

oh lol sorry my bad. i taught you meant beating the MLS teams in that tourney.

Nah it's all gravy man! But what do you guys think about this tournament, are the Mexican teams going to win it easily or are the MLS squads going to give us some competition? I think it all depends on what teams go like Chivas, America, Toluca, Pachuca, and Cruz Azul would be great teams to compete against the MLS teams.

Calif
12-27-2006, 08:21 AM
I don't know it depends what teams from the MLS assist to the cup!!!!

el chingon
12-27-2006, 05:49 PM
well i dont think MLS teams suck. i think they're better then costa rican teams. and costa rican teams have given us some good competition in the concacaf champions cup.

but i still think we should be able to win most of the games.

mawin312
12-27-2006, 10:01 PM
MLS isnt TOO bad. Its just slow and boring, but yeah they are better then Costa Rican teams (except Saprissa IMO).

LOS ANGELES - Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber together with the Commissioner of the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol Primera Division (Mexican Soccer Federation's First Division), Decio de Maria, today announced the creation of SuperLiga™, the preeminent club tournament in North America that will not only decide the best in the region but will also award the heftiest winner's purse in North American soccer history.

Eight clubs - four each from the top flight leagues of the United States and Mexico - will vie to determine a singular champion of North America. The format, modeled after the UEFA Champions League, will include a group phase and a knockout phase with all games held in U.S. venues. SuperLiga will be played between July 24 and August 29, 2007. In addition to the prestige of capturing this continental honor, the club that emerges as SuperLiga champion will take home $1 million dollars in prize money, an unprecedented prize purse in North American soccer history.

"We are proud to announce the creation of SuperLiga, which will quickly become one of the most prestigious international club soccer tournaments held in the United States," Garber said. "This tournament presents the most authentic competition between rival soccer nations and will bring out the passion and pride of fans in our hemisphere."

While competitive criteria will determine participants in future editions of SuperLiga, the eight teams in the inaugural 2007 edition of SuperLiga were selected on an invitation-only basis: reigning CONCACAF champions Club America, Copa Sudamericana holders CF Pachuca, one-time league champion Monarcas Morelia and CD Guadalajara from Mexico; four-time MLS Cup champion D.C. United, Western Conference champion FC Dallas, two-time MLS Cup and CONCACAF Champions, Los Angeles Galaxy and the MLS Cup 2006 champions, Houston Dynamo will represent the United States. SuperLiga 2007 will count on both reigning league champions, the Houston Dynamo (MLS) and Chivas Guadalajara (Mexico).

"Given the great soccer rivalry between the two countries, we strongly believe SuperLiga will be a great international soccer tournament," said De Maria. "Featuring the top teams in both leagues, SuperLiga will become an instant favorite among the millions of soccer fans in Mexico and U.S."

The competition begins with two games on July 24, one in Dallas and one in Los Angeles. The entire tournament will be broadcast live in primetime by Univision's TeleFutura Network in the United States and by Televisa and TV Azteca in Mexico. The SuperLiga final will be held on August 29 at a U.S. venue to be determined.

The SuperLiga field of teams is divided into two groups, each with two representatives from the respective leagues:

Group A Group B
CD Guadalajara (México) Club América (México)
FC Dallas (MLS) D.C. United (MLS)
Los Angeles Galaxy (MLS) Houston Dynamo (MLS)
CF Pachuca (México) Monarcas Morelia (México)

The SuperLiga mark took its inspiration from representative symbols of the Americas - the Bald Eagle native to the United States and Canada, and the Golden Eagle which appears on Mexico's flag. A concept of the two birds swooping toward the same soccer ball evolved into a graphical representation of a single feather with two sides - one silver, one gold - enveloping the ball, thus evoking an elite nature of the competition. Historically in both countries, the feather - la pluma in Spanish - has long been revered as an emblem of bravery, excellence and glory. The SuperLiga trophy will reflect this graceful form as it becomes a highly-coveted "feather in the cap" among North America's top teams.

01-31-2007, 06:00 PM
Are they going to be aggregate semi finals?
id hope so, i mean if there taking it from the UEFA CL they should. Also why arent there more clubs? just 8 teams isnt enough for me. Theres not that much excitement in the whole thing for me. I mean basically starting at a the Quarter finals is crap.
There are 12 clubs in mls well 13 now with the arrival of Toronto FC,6 in each confrence take the top four in each confrence and then take the top 8 from Mexicos. Then they would have 4 groups of 4 clubs, then go from there, that would be much more exciting to see. Watching 4 teams from each league doesnt really mean that they are the top team in both leagues.

Calif
01-31-2007, 11:22 PM

Will the million dollar prize money help pay David Beckhams weeks salary for the Galaxy??? Or will the Mexican teams take it serious... It taking place when the Mexican teams players are supposed to be relaxing and getting refreshed! Whats this about 12 teams in the world club... it didn't work when they tried that in Brasil... the Euro clubs aren't interested. Unless you can move it away from Japan.

Calif
02-01-2007, 11:21 PM
I don't know! But I think that the Mexican Clubs will take this cup seriously as it will help them to get in shape for their next season!

dannymex
02-13-2007, 07:54 AM
yeah im pretty sure mexican clubs are a higher level. Not trying to bag on US clubs, but just based on the games that i have seen, it seems that way.

Adammac19
02-15-2007, 03:29 AM
I think this competition is a step towards trying to maybe a sort of CONCACAF champions league and try and enliminate the CCC. I really hope this does turn out to do well becasue I think for the Ameircan sides that will be in the tourney these types of experience will help the clubs grow.

P-P
07-25-2007, 10:23 PM
....along with L Gabriel Rey

they still have Leyva as a loan from Veracruz

and last time i heard about Pavlovich, he was playing in Monarcas Primera A (a team of Monarcas for that division) along with the World Champion Ever Guzman, who should already be playing in the 1st team

Xizor
07-25-2007, 10:27 PM
Speaking of Ever Guzman why wasn't he called up to the U-20 World Cup? This guy is a very good striker, he's really going to be a great player in the years to come!

P-P
07-25-2007, 10:32 PM
I would guess that the problem is his experience in first division. the only coach who let him play was Dario Franco a couple of years back. he's played no more than 10 and i know of at least one goal againts Atlas ( i think there's 2 though)

he was called to Rio de Janeiro to play in th Panamerican Games, but i think he's been in bench for all games. i don't remember any activity from him

Xizor
07-25-2007, 10:38 PM

same question with Pavlovich.

its good that they got rid of two strikers, Rey and Lugo. now there's going to be more chanses for Ever to move up to 1st team

So far, the US teams are have 2 wins and 2 draws. :D

Oh, and I think Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas are the best MLS teams. The LA Galaxy winning was someone of an upset. Having Donovan available and the "Beckham" attention from the media seems to have inspired them to play better.

De Rosario would be Dynamo's best player and Toja may be FC Dallas' best.

What is so surprising about MLS teams winnig? From what I've read, you all act like MLS teams are a joke and are just lucky to get a win against these mexican teams. You all just need to open your eyes and realize that MLS has progressed and that it's teams are getting better. Even though mexican teams haven't started their season yet, it doesn't mean that they aren't as dangerous on the field as how they would be if they had already began their season. You have to remeber it's gainst some of the best teams from Mexico against some fo the best from the MLS.

Xizor
07-29-2007, 12:52 AM
It's suprising to see MLS teams winning 'cause we thought the Mexican teams would put a little more interest into the tournament since Mex vs. USA games have always been very comepetitive. MLS is not a joke, they have some pretty tough teams that have grown in the past few years. Don't worry Elicea today Mexico will get their revenge, hopefully. Oh and by the way I would'nt consider Morelia one of the best teams in Mexico, not by a long shot!

http://www.mediotiempo.com/images/noticias/44076.jpg

In some aspects yes because last season the US teams were in rhythm, there league was like half way through when this competition started if I'm not wrong. As for the Mexican clubs, they were still in (pre-temporada) or off-season if you will. This time Mexico is bringing more competitive squads into the tournament, I really want to see how the US clubs handle Chivas or Santos! :worried: :D

Chivas,Santos can probably beat any mls team but iunno how Houston Dyanmo though there a very talented team winning back to back championships, it will be tough but i think a mexican team will win this tournament...

^Im not bue...everyone here knows that if u go mexico to play football...is good...(means ur good but not enough to play in europe or the NT) and if u go USA....then u r as bad as u can be u.u

Why is it that if you play in the US, then it means your a horrible player? Players from the MLS are just as good as players from other leagues.

I understand why b-rabbit has that opinion, he's from Argentina. And I would assume Argentina has no coverage what so ever on the MLS. Plus when your in a country like Argentina, Brazil or Mexico you really don't hear much if not any news on the MLS. Soccer is number one in all those countries and they much rather follow the local league. Am I right b-rabbit or am I just full of shit? lol

^Of what u r full of is ur anatomy's business :p

But yeah kind of...I didnt even know USA had a league till beckham went there.

Im not saying they r bad, but is what we consider here...tho I honestly think that MLS is not as good as other leagues...

Top three leagues in the Americas IMO:

1)Brazil
2)Mexico
3)Argentina

i rather prefer the mexican league than the brazilian league, i think the mexican league is more competitive towards the title, like the top teams in the league are always very tight in points.......

Xizor

Yeah that's true plus the Mexican league always has well balanced teams unlike Argentina and Brazil they just have like two or three top teams. For example Argentina just has Boca Juniors, River Plate and maybe San Lorenzo. Brazil has Sao Paulo, Santos, well to be honest Brazil has a tough league regardless. Mexico is the same way but the teams are very unpredictable. Teams are judged by there performances each game day, if no positive results are obtained you can bet your ass the coach will get fired immediately. It's weird in Mexico but everything seems to function well, I don't know what do you guys think?

^Agree on that...tho Arg has better players than both leagues

I think Brazil and Argentina both develop great players, that's why they're all over the World.
