Hart Announces 17-Player Roster for Hungary Friendly
http://www.canadasoccer.com/eng/media/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=2577
OTTAWA, ONTARIO – Canada’s men’s national team interim head coach Stephen Hart announced his 17-player roster for the upcoming international friendly match-up against Hungary. The game will take place on November 15th at 8:00 pm local time (2:00 am ET) in Székesfehérvár (just outside of Budapest), Hungary.
Canada’s last match up against Hungary dates back 20 years when both teams met in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Hungary won that game 2:0 played in Iraputo, Mexico.
Hungary (ranked 76th) has lost their last two international matches; one to Malta (1:2) and the other against Turkey (0:1), both in UEFA EURO 2008 Preliminary Competition.
Canada (ranked 71st) on the other hand has performed well in 2006 with an impressive 2:1:1 record with wins against Jamaica and Austria.
MLS (Major League Soccer) player of the year nominee and Houston Dynamo Dwayne de Rosario will be back on the pitch for Canada. De Rosario, who will be playing days before in the MLS Cup final at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas on November 12th, will be take part in his first game for Canada since March 1st 2006 when Canada defeated Austria 2:0.
Another noticeable is Fulham midfielder and Canadian soccer veteran Tomasz Radzinski. Radzinski has been at the forefront of Canada’s successes of late and will be seeking his 32nd cap for the national team. Radzinski was the lone Canadian goalscorer in the second of two friendlies against Jamaica on October 8th, 2006 in Kingston, Jamaica.
Hart may once again call on Greg Sutton of the USL First Division Montréal Impact to act as the guardian between the posts for the Canucks. Sutton will be looking for another shut-out performance. He has collected two in 2006; a 0:0 draw with the United States in January and a 1:0 win against Jamaica on September 4th.
In addition, head coach Stephen Hart decided to bring in a new face to the roster. Calgary native Issey Nakajima-Farran, will be seeking his first cap for the senior team. Nakajima-Farran is currently playing for Vejle Boldklub in the Danish first division.
“Everyone is very enthusiastic about this game,” said Hart. “We have been bitten by the injury bug, however, the intention of these games is to continue to provide an opportunity for players who want to play for Canada, to come into the squad and showcase themselves.”
The team will travel to Budapest, Hungary on November 12th to participate in a series of training sessions prior to the match.

Ipswich Town FC midfielder Jaime Peters to join the Canadian team in Hungary
http://www.canadasoccer.com/eng/media/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=2582
OTTAWA, ONTARIO – Head coach Stephen Hart announced over the weekend that Ipswich Town FC midfielder Jaime Peters will join the Canadian team for the upcoming international friendly between Canada and Hungary in Székesfehérvár (just outside of Budapest) on November 15th. The game kicks off at 8:00pm local time (2:00 pm ET).
It’s been a year since Peters last played for the men’s national team. His last appearance was on November 15th, 2005 when Canada defeated Luxemburg 1:0.
The Pickering, Ontario native is a well known veteran on Canada’s U-20 World Cup team. In fact, Peters is coming off a recent scoring performance where he earned his second career goal for the U-20 squad on October 6th 2006 when Canada defeated the Czech Republic 2:1.
21-year-old midfielder Andrzej Ornoch will also be making his debut for Canada. The Scarborough-native is enjoying a good season with Hungarian club Papa Lombard FC and will look to make a lasting first impression on the Canadian head coach.
Stephen Hart also announced that due to slight injuries both Adrian Serioux and Dwayne De Rosario of the MLS Cup champions Houston Dynamo will not be able to play for Canada. As well, Kevin McKenna will not be able to compete due to illness.
Reminder: Canada’s match against Hungary will be broadcast live on GOL TV.

Radzinski named Canada captain for friendly

Canada is hurting ahead of Wednesday’s soccer friendly in Hungary, leaving acting coach Stephen Hart scrambling to find players to fill the bench.
Captain and defender Kevin McKenna has pulled out because he is recovering from a bout of flu. And attacking midfielder Dwayne De Rosario (foot) and defender-midfielder Adrian Serioux (knee) stayed at home after picking up injuries Sunday while helping the Houston Dynamo win the MLS Cup.
With only 17 players called up for the game, that meant Hart found himself with only one goalie and two outfield players as subs.
“We’ve gone through a little rough period,” Hart said Tuesday from the team hotel in Budapest.
“Quite frankly, everybody here is just stunned at how many injuries people have all of a sudden run into.”
Ipswich midfielder Jaime Peters has been called in and Hart was hoping to overcome resistance from German club Kaiserlautern to bring in midfielder Josh Simpson.
Several other possible reinforcements have been ruled out by injury.
Hart’s hands are further tied by a demand from FC Copenhagen that midfielder Atiba Hutchinson only play 45 minutes. The Danish club plays Portugal’s Benfica in Champions League play next Tuesday.
With McKenna out, Hart has given 32-year-old Fulham striker Tomasz Radzinski the captain’s armband.
“In the last few games under Frank (Yallop) he showed excellent leadership in the dressing room,” said Hart. “He showed leadership through his performance.
“This has continued under myself as interim (coach) and I think he deserves the opportunity.”
Said Radzinski: “I guess I’m the oldest guy on the team and probably with the most experience ... I’d be really happy to contribute (as captain).”
The captaincy speaks volumes for how Radzinski’s relationship with the national team program has evolved. Former coach Holger Osieck barred the forward from the national team when he failed to show up for Gold Cup qualifying in 1999. Osieck later relented and Radzinski has gone on to become a loyal member of the squad.
The Hungary game marks the third and last outing of Hart’s stint as acting coach. Canada split the first two games, against Jamaica.
The Canadian Soccer Association is looking for a permanent coach with Hart and under-20 manager Dale Mitchell seen as leading domestic candidates.
One new face on Hart’s roster is Issey Nakajima-Farran, a 22-year-old midfielder from Calgary who plays for Vejle Boldklub in Denmark.
The Hungary game marks a return for midfielder Tam Nsaliwa, now playing for Panionios in Greece. Nsaliwa has 10 caps for Canada but has not suited up for the national team since 2003.
“He’s smiling, he’s buzzing round. It’s good,” Hart said of Nsaliwa.
Incumbent Greg Sutton and Josh Wagenaar are the goalies in camp, but Hart says expect to see former No. 1 Lars Hirschfeld back in the future.
Hart said Hirschfeld had been called up for the Hungary game and would probably have started if he had not been forced to drop out with a nagging injury.
Defender Richard Hastings is another possible veteran who may return to the fold down the line, Hart said. Hastings, who has 36 caps, has also not played for Canada in three years but is interested in making a comeback.
Hart said he decided not to use the rash of injuries to call up Hastings because he did not want to make it look like a last-minute decision to have the Inverness Caledonian Thistle player rejoin the national team program.
Hungary is ranked 76th in the world, compared to No. 71 for Canada.
The Hungarians are sixth in their European qualifying group with three points from four games, having lost 2-1 to Malta, 1-0 to Turkey, 4-1 to Norway and beaten Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-1.
Peter Varhidi, manager of the Hungarian under-19 squad, will coach the Hungarians against Canada in the wake of Peter Bozsik’s resignation last month following the loss to No. 111 Malta.
Varhidi named 11 uncapped players in his squad for Canada. The roster includes striker Zoltan Gera (West Brom, England) and midfielder Attila Filkor (Inter Milan, Italy).
The Canada-Hungary game is being carried by GolTV (2 p.m. ET).
The last time the two met was at the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico in a game won 2-0 by Hungary.

Canada falls to Hungary
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Soccer/Canada/2006/11/15/2365646-cp.html
SZEKESFEHERVAR, Hungary (CP) - Canada's men's soccer team couldn't overcome a rash of injuries, losing 1-0 to Hungary in an international friendly Wednesday.
Tamas Priskin scored on a header in the 36th minute to lift Hungary to the victory. Priskin connected on Gyorgy Sandor's free kick from the left side of the 18-yard box, heading the ball backwards over Canadian goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar, who was making his senior team debut.
Acting Canadian coach Stephen Hart was pleased with his squad's performance, considering he was missing some key players for the game and had to scramble for replacements.
"We had some young players coming in, we had a lot of injury problems and players being asked to play in positions they weren't comfortable with, and then I was forced to make some early substitutions that I didn't really want to make," Hart said after the game. "But overall the players stepped in and did really well and it's unfortunate we gave up the goal."
The friendly, played on a muddy pitch just outside Budapest, marked the first meeting between the two teams since the 1986 World Cup in Mexico in a game won 2-0 by Hungary.
Canada, ranked 71st in the world, had numerous decent scoring chances against No. 76-ranked Hungary, overcoming some early nerves to take it to the Hungarians in the second half. Fulham midfielder-forward Tomasz Radzinski, wearing the captain's band, had Canada's best chance in the 57th minute, but sent a shot sailing over an open net.
"We got a lot of crosses in, and we were of course trying to score, and we also had some good chances where we got into good scoring positions and the players hesitated or tried to pass the ball, whereas if they were a little more selfish we might have got something out of it," said Hart. "But it's just something we have to keep working on and keep encouraging the players to have the opportunity to take their chances."
Hungary outshot Canada 5-4.
The Canadians were missing captain and defender Kevin McKenna, recovering from a bout of the flu, while attacking midfielder Dwayne De Rosario (foot) and midfielder-defender Adrian Serioux (knee) stayed home to rest injuries they picked up while helping the Houston Dynamo win the MLS Cup last Sunday.
Hart also had to replace limping defender Ante Jazic with Adam Braz in the 28th minute.
The interim coach was pleased with the performance of the young players.
"I think any coach coming into the job can see that we have some young players that are at least capable of giving us some depth and pushing some of the more established players," said Hart.
Montreal defender Andrew Hainault earned his first cap and played the full 90 minutes. Issey Nakajima-Farran, a 22-year-old midfielder from Calgary who plays for Vejle Boldklub in Denmark, also earned his first cap, coming off the bench to start the second half in place of Julian de Guzman. Ipswich midfielder Jaime Peters of Pickering, Ont., was a late addition to the roster and was a second-half sub for Atiba Hutchinson, seeing his first action for the national side in a year.
Defender Andrzej Ornoch of Toronto saw his first national team action when Hart subbed him in in the 86th minute.
The game was Hart's third and final stint as the team's acting head coach. The Canadian Soccer Association is looking for a permanent coach with Hart and under-20 manager Dale Mitchell seen as leading domestic candidates.
"The board of directors will have to make their decision on the head coach," said Hart. "As far as I'm concerned, my interim positions over and it's just up to them now."
Hungary, meanwhile, was playing its first game after an embarrassing loss to Malta last month in a European Championship qualifying match which led to the resignation of coach Peter Bozsik. Peter Varhidi, who leads Hungary's under-19 team, is the interim coach until Bozsik's replacement is found.
Four Hungarians made their debut on the national team - Sandor, Adam Hrepka, Bela Balogh and Adam Vass, a deliberate effort by Varhidi to give a fresh start to a squad which has not played in a major international tournament in 20 years.
"We're happy with this victory but no matter the result, this is the only way to go," Varhidi said, referring to the new players. "We see that Hungarian football has a future ... but this is only the beginning of the road."

Josh Wagenaar Earns 1st Senior Cap For Canada

Székesfehérvár, Hungary – In a cold and damp evening in Central Europe, Canada, hit with the injury bug, challenged a young Hungary team today in Székesfehérvár, Hungary during an international friendly match-up. Hungary’s lone goal was enough to beat Canada 1:0.
Hungary was obviously starving for a winning performance coming off a disappointing loss recently to 111th ranked Malta.
Canadian Forward Iain Hume set the pace for Canada early by taking charge of the offence. Canada was quickly awarded two free kicks at the 9th and 13th minutes and Hume was given the task on both occasions. His second attempt, from just outside the box, came the closest as it was tipped over the bar by the Hungarian goalkeeper, Zoltin Vegh. Hume then followed up with a header on the ensuing corner that barely missed the mark.
Moments later, Rob Friend drove a staggering header inches over the bar at the 14th minute off a left side corner kick.
Canada was in control of the match until Hungary decided to step up their pace of play at the 17th minute. A run down the right hand side gave an opportunity for a low driving cross which was headed in the right low corner. Fortunately, Canadian goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar, in his first senior team debut, was up to the task and made a show stopping diving save keeping it a scoreless game.
Stephen Hart made a quick substitution early into the match on the 28th minute. Montreal Impact player Adam Braz was brought in to replace Ante Jazic in the midfield.
Thomasz Radzinski, wearing the captain band for Canada, showed signs of domination on the wings. Radzinski made a spectacular interception at the 35th minute in the Hungarian defensive zone but his pass was a touch too far for Friend, who would have had only the goalkeeper to beat.
Canada had a glimpse of weakness in their defensive third at the 36th minute giving up a free kick from 20 yards out. Hungary took the opportunity to cross the ball into the unmarked Tamas Priskin of Hungary who made no mistake with a powerful header over Wagenaar for the goal. Hungary led 1:0.
Canada tried to equalize before the half time whistle when Hume made a fabulous pass that landed in the penalty spot but no Canuck was available to capitalize on the play.
A corner kick late in the 45th minute found Tam Nsaliwa who kicked it over the bar to end the half.
The first half was a low shooting affair with only three shots for Canada compared to Hungary’s two.
Stephen Hart made additional substitutions over the break. Hart brought in Jaime Peters for Atiba Hutchinson while Issey-Farran Nakajima replaced Julian de Guzman, earning his first cap for Canada.
Hungary came out with the same fierce attacking mind set they had at the end of the first half. A corner kick at the 51st minute landed in the penalty area but was easily cleared by the Canadian defence.
A yellow card was given to Hungary Balazd Toth at the 53rd minute for a brutal tackle on newcomer Nakajima.
Peters got noticed quickly with a quick break at the 57th minute. He flew by everyone to be denied only by Vegh who came to challenge him successfully one on one.
Canada continued its quest for an equalizer when Hume fooled his Hungarian marker on the left hand flank. Hume then crossed it in perfectly to Radzinski. However, the Canadian captain could not capitalize on the golden opportunity to tie the game and unfortunately blew his shot over the bar.
Patrice Bernier had a solid match defensively and was given a rare occasion to step up for a free kick for the red and white from 30 yards out at the 67th minute. His shot found the mark but was stopped by Zoltin Vegh.
Friend broke the Hungarian defence at the 69th minute but was quickly met by a racing opponent who tackled him heavily in the box. Friend, forced to the ground, was given a yellow card on a questionable call from the referee.
Hume was given a well deserved break at the 86th minute when Hart decided to give Andrzej Ornoch a crack at the big time and his first cap for Canada.
While Canada had most of the possession and a handful of scoring opportunities, the hard working Canucks could not capitalize on their chances. Hungary won 1:0.
Montreal native Andrew Hainault earned his first senior cap for Canada playing a full 90 minutes.
“The team performance was very promising,” said head coach Stephen Hart. “Under some difficult circumstances we were forced to make some substitutions due to injuries but the players that came on gave a good account of themselves and the young players showed no fear in their performance.”
