Well, a lot of people are talking about the U.S., some negatively, some positively. The general consenus is that they are extremely improved, and could get past the group stage of the Cup, and with some luck, a little further. I know everyone has an opinion, and they are entitled to voice it, so I just figured I may as well give everyone the forum to do it. So, let's hear some opinions on the U.S.A's chances in the World Cup.
Oh, and PLEASE, let's keep this civil. I don't care if you are American, English, Mexican, Barazillian, Italian, hell, I don't even care if you're from San Marino, let's keep this clean, OK?

Thanks.

can they get past the group stage? maybe, it all depends on who they are grouped with, but i think they could. are they improved from 98, yes i think they are. But i still don't think they are as good as the 94 team was. the US does have some young players coming up, but like i said in the US forum. there is no way that these young players are ready to play in an atmosphere like they will face in the world cup, and they are not going to get ready by playing teams like ecuador. I think that 2002 will be a great expierience for the United states's young players. but i think it will be 2006 that these player can make it past the round of 16 and actually make an impact in the world cup.

there is always a cinderella team in the World Cup team that now one gives a chance , and then the teams stuns the world and gets very far in the tournament example 98 crotia 94 sweeden i say why cant it be the US we are without a doubt better then 98 and i would say better then the 94 team the 94 team had a great defense and so does this current team and the current team has more fire power in the midfield and at attack . but back to my point i think we will surprise people and teams i dont know i just have a good feeling but then again i had a really good feeling that Inter would beat Miland today and well a 6-0 loss was way off so i could be wrong but club and the World Cup are totally different but this team has very talented and under rated players but i have said it a million times and i will say i tagain we will shock the world in 2002 !!!! :star: :star:

about the comments GB made i agree 100% that we wont be helping our cause by playing weaker teams for friendlies but we will get the big games we played brazil and looked pretty good with what we had so i am not totally upset with the lack of quality but i am sure as time goes and the closer we get to the World Cup we will get some better quality although ecuador has been playing pretty well in WC qualy in south america they did knock off brazil not easy task

i believe that the deterent for USA soccer is the lack of passion the country has for it. that's what seperates them from teams like croatia, which by no means was a cinderella story in my opinion, and sweden. the US may in fact become a legitimate contender to win a WC one day - but i don't see it transpiring any time soon. maybe 8-10 WC's down the road but right now the most i see them doing is sneaking out a spot in the final 16.

that's my $ 0.2 anyway.

The bottom line:
MLS is trying to be as good in soccer as Europe is but that will never happen
The same can be said for FIBA and NBA in basketball

USA can be the best in Northern America but it has no chance to match with European teams, Europe is simply too strong in soccer.

the is simply BS i am sorry i will even in a way prove that my " degrading the NBA which i am not but you will understand what i mean . lets take the Olympics more so basketball , now traditionally Dream Team has torn through the rest of the world in basketball , that did not happen in sydney did it ya we still won but by the standards set here we didnt if the rest of the world can catch up with the Americans in basketball then the Americans can catch up with the rest of the world with soccer !!!. and on hell yes MLS is trying to be like europe Europe has the best club football in the world but i will tell you this much no country can go from nothing to the world Elite in 6 little years , i dont care what country you are talking about in any sport it will never happen so before making some stupid comments think a little bit

what are you talking about lilphenom ? the states toyed with everyother country even without bryant, shaq, iverson and mcgrady. can you imagine they were there ?

add vince carter and there's your starting line up. the game would be over 5 minutes in. unless they were to play steve nash and the rest of the canadians of course.

Having recently seen the US national team i'm afraid whilst they wont suffer the humiliation that they got at France 98 2006 will see them depart very early on.Bruce Arena has got them playing a long ball game, the lack of midfield creativity is apparent and Brian Mcbride is past it now for the international scene.

It all depends on the draw, but I expect them to put in a solid performance and get to the second round or quarters, but no further.

I don't think they'll have the passion that Mexico has for football in North America.

Yep. That's what I also think it all depends on the group.

Yes, the World Cup is still much more of an 'exclusive' prize than the Euros. The Euros have been won by Spain, Russia, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, greece...

Guatemala will beat england, mexico will lose to Cuba, Argetina will lose to Japan and the final will be Guatemala vs Cuba

hahahahahaha i love saying that.....

no,

the USA will at least pass the Group stage, then the 16, then hopefully into the quaters, and if they are in there best form and pull out a win i would be proud, then if they lose or win in the semis it doesn't matter.... since they have already placed in the top four of the world...

I say if usa plays with all there good players like Brian Mcbride, Reina, Donovan, Johnson, Beasley, and all the good stuff... USA will at least pass the group stage.

And dudes you guys look at USA like America Samoa hahaha

you should look at them like England or Brasil or Argentina

ur right.. the us national team does deserve respect. they have improved greatly in last few years. Having said that, its still to early to think of them as serious contenders for the comming world cup.

I have no doubt that this 2006 world cup will be won by a Northern European team. Germany, England or Netherlands will be the winners. Beyond any doubt.

as long as donovan passes, mcbride DOESN'T start, beasely stays healthy, and the USA NT picks up the 3 headed monster of the MLS's New England Rev's, then i'll see them through to the final 16
