Club Atlético Boca Juniors is the one of the most popular Argentine sports clubs, best known for its football team. Its home base is the neighbourhood of La Boca, in Buenos Aires, and it hosts its home games at the Bombonera (chocolate box) stadium at 805 Brandsen Street.
Boca holds the international record of 16 international titles, including five Copa Libertadores and three Intercontinental Cups. The club has also won 22 Argentine professional championships.
Boca Juniors was positioned in a shared 12th position in the election of the FIFA Clubs of the 20th Century. It's also a fixture in the top 30 of the Club World Ranking maintained by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics and has reached the top position of the monthly ranking 6 times (mostly during coach Carlos Bianchi's tenure). As of the latest ranking (May 1, 2005 to April 30, 2006) they occupied the eighteenth position.
History
The team
On 3 April 1905, five Italian immigrants gathered in the Plaza Solís, located in the heart of the La Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Esteban Baglietto, Alfredo Scarpatti, Santiago Sana, and brothers Juan and Teodoro Farenga founded Boca Juniors (the use of English language in team names was commonplace, as British railroad workers introduced football into Argentina).
The original jersey colour was pink, which was quickly abandoned for thin black-and-white vertical stripes. The legend has it that in 1907 Boca played another team that used these colors, to decide who would get to keep them. Boca lost, and decided to adopt the colors of the flag of the first boat to subsequently sail into the port at La Boca. As the boat was from Sweden, blue-and-gold were adopted as the new team colours. The first version had a yellow diagonal band, which was later changed to a horizontal stripe.
Boca Juniors played in local leagues and the amateur second division until being promoted to the first division in 1913, when the division was expanded from six teams to 15. Boca were never relegated; they won six amateur championships (1919, 1920, 1923, 1924, 1926, and 1930). With the introduction of professionalism in Argentina, Boca won the first title in 1931.
First Match: May 6, 1905. vs. Mariano Moreno.
First international match: December 8, 1907. vs. Universal (Montevideo, Uruguay)
First professional match: May 31, 1931 vs. Chacarita Juniors.
The Crest
Boca Juniors Crest, as of early 2000sThe shape of the crest has remained unchanged throughout Boca's history. In 1955, laurel leaves were added to celebrate the club's 50th anniversary, and the colours were changed to match those on the team's jersey.
In 1970, one star was added to the badge for each title won domestically (top part, above the initials) and internationally (bottom part). A new star is added to the corresponding section whenever Boca win a title. To the delight of fans, the crest has had to be modified several times in recent years, most recently after Boca's victory in the 2006 Clausura.
The stadium
Boca Juniors used several fields before settling on the current grounds on Brandsen Street. Construction work on the concrete structure started in 1938; during the erection of the stands, Boca played their home matches in the Ferrocarril Oeste field in Caballito until 1940. A third level was added in 1953, and the nickname La Bombonera ('The Chocolate Box') was born. The side opposite the Casa Amarilla railway platforms remained mostly unbuilt until 1996, when it was upgraded with new balconies and VIP booths. La Bombonera is renowned for its vibrating when fans start to jump in rhythm.
Dársena Sud: 1908 - 1912
Wilde: 1914 - 1915
Brins y Sengüel: 1916 - 1924
Brandsen: from 1924
The Fans
Boca Juniors is traditionally regarded as the club of Argentina's working class, in contrast with the supposedly more upper-class support base of cross-town rivals Club Atlético River Plate. Boca fans are known for valuing sacrifice and loyalty in good times and bad. River Plate fans, in contrast, are known for demanding attractive play from their team.
As of August 2005, the club has about 61,000 card-carrying members. Registrations are currently halted because of the limited stadium capacity. Boca claims to be the club of "half plus one" of Argentina's population, but a 2006 survey placed its following at 40%[1], still with the biggest minority.
The Boca-River Superclásico rivalry is one of the most thrilling derbies in the world[2]. As of March 2006, Boca leads with 113 victories, 90 draws, and 93 losses against River. After each match (excepting ties), street signs cover Buenos Aires, at fans' own expense, "ribbing" the losing side with humorous remarks. This has become part of Buenos Aires cultural ever since a Boca winning streak in the 1990s.
Nicknames
Boca fans are known as los xeneizes (the Genoese) after the Italian (especially Genoese) immigrants who founded the team and populated La Boca in the early 20th century. The word "xeneize" is Genoese dialect for the standard-Italian word "genovesi," which means "Genoese."
The name bosteros (horse-shitters) originates from the horse manure used in the brick factory that occupied the ground where La Bombonera stands. Originally an insult used by rivals, Boca fans have taken to wearing it with pride.
Following the team colors, Boca's shirt is also called la azul y oro (the blue-and-gold).
Boca's supporters are known as la número 12 or La Doce (player number Doce or 12, meaning "the 12th man") because of the influence they have on rival teams -- especially in home games -- where the stadium literally pulsates with their cheering.
International
Peñas (fan clubs) exist in many Argentine cities, and abroad, in countries such as Spain, Israel and Japan.
Boca have fans throughout Latin America, especially in Colombia and Peru, which are the home countries of many top players, parts of the USA due to Latin inmigration, and also in Japan because of the club's success in recent years at the Intercontinental Cup held in Japan. All over the world, fans are drawn to Boca by the club's international titles, and by the successes of Boca players who went on to play in European football such as Diego Maradona, Gabriel Batistuta and Juan Román Riquelme.
Others
Boca Juniors was the fifth football club in the world to have its own TV channel, opened in 2003. Boca TV broadcasted 24 hours a day, featuring sports programs and talk shows. The channel was closed in 2005.
There is a line of Boca coffins available for dead fans
[3], as well as the official Boca's cemetery[4].
Boca has its own fleet of taxies[5].
Another of Boca Juniors' products is the Boca Wine.[6].

Bianchi won nine, including Aperturas in 1998, 2000 and 2003, the 1999 Clausura, the Libertadores Cup in 2000, 2001, and 2003, and the Intercontinental Cup in 2000 and 2003. Mas Grande Que Nunca
http://espndeportes-att.espn.go.com/2003/photos2006/0914/f_Bocas_412x232.jpg

http://espndeportes-att.espn.go.com/2003/photos2006/0918/f_lavo2_vt.jpg
Empate a cero.

http://www.mediotiempo.com/images/noticias/26937.jpg

http://www.mediotiempo.com/images/noticias/27121.jpg
"No he contactado con nadie.

http://www.mediotiempo.com/images/noticias/27720.jpg

http://espndeportes-att.espn.go.com/2003/photos2006/1027/f_Suazo_ht.jpg

http://www.mediotiempo.com/images/noticias/30322.jpg

Columbus reportedly eyeing Boca Juniors hero
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - Playmaking forward Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who has won 15 titles with famed Argentina club Boca Juniors, is considering becoming the latest high-profile player to jump to the United States' Major League Soccer, two major newspapers reported Tuesday.
La Nacion newspaper said Barros Schelotto was still analyzing the US$2 million (€1.5 million) offer but seemed just "a step away from emigrating" to the Columbus Crew.
"We don't have any comment at this time," Crew spokesman Dave Stephany said.
MLS began its 12th season on Saturday and its transfer window closes on Sunday. English midfielder David Beckham is scheduled to join the Los Angeles Galaxy later this year as is Cuauhtemoc Blanco with the Chicago Fire. Former U.S. national team midfielder Claudio Reyna made his MLS debut with the New York Red Bulls on Saturday.
MLS in November adopted its "designated player rule" that allowed clubs to sign at most two players outside the league's salary cap regulations.
La Nacion said if Barros Schelotto accepts the Crew's offer, he could play his last Argentine league match in Sunday's "superclassico" between Boca and archrival River Plate.
The 33-year-old Barros Schelotto is one of Boca's most idolized players, revered for his playmaking ability and dribbling skill.
But on a Boca squad top heavy with talent that just missed winning its third straight league titles last season, his playing time has dwindled and La Nacion said he was eager to find a new team.
La Nacion said Barros Schelotto met last week with Boca president Mauricio Macri and acknowledged he wanted "a change of air." Macri reportedly said Boca would not stand in the way.
Macri had no immediately comment Tuesday on the reports in La Nacion and another in another leading daily, Clarin, that headlined "Guillermo to say farewell after River?"
Clarin, South America's top-circulation daily, said Barros Schelotto reportedly was "interested and analyzing" the offer by the Crew, citing unidentified sources close to the player.
"Barros Schelotto would be one of the stars," added Clarin, which noted Guillermo will turn 34 on May 4. It said while the MLS transfer deadline expires in five days, Barros Schelotto would be exempt and would have until next week to decide.
MLS spokesman Dan Courtemanche would not comment on the reports.
"I don't want to talk about this issue at all," Barros Schelotto told reporters.
Barros Schelotto's contract with Boca expires in June. He arrived at the Buenos Aires club in 1997 from Argentine side Gimnasia of La Plata and quickly won a huge fan following as one of Boca's most beloved players.
In nine years, Barros Schelotto has scored 87 goals in 302 matches. Among the 15 titles Barros Schelotto has won include the Copa Libertadores in 2000, 2001 and 2003 - and the world club title in 2000 and 2003.
Barros Schelotto has been losing playing time to players such as Martin Palermo and Rodrigo Palacio. Nonetheless, his appearance in games is greeted with loud ovations and long applause.

OK, around page 11 or so, you people were asking me if I'm a boca fan and the answer is yes.
And here is some news:
Argentine star signs with Columbus
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Major League Soccer locked up another high-profile international player when Argentine star Guillermo Barros Schelotto signed a two-year contract with the Columbus Crew.
Crew general manager Mark McCullers confirmed the signing on Wednesday.
The 33-year-old Barros Schelotto won 15 titles with the famed Argentina club Boca Juniors. But his playing time diminished in recent years as young, budding stars climbed the ranks with the team.
He is expected to arrive in Columbus either Sunday night or Monday morning and will spend all of next week with the Crew before returning to Argentina for a fan farewell on April 29. He will then return with his family and begin practicing with the team.
His first game would be May 5 at Kansas City and his first home game on May 12 against Chivas USA.
Barros Schelotto's signing follows the announcement of the pending arrivals of England's David Beckham to the Los Angeles Galaxy and Mexico's Cuauhtemoc Blanco to the Chicago Fire, and comes one day after the New York Red Bulls announced the acquisition of Colombian forward Juan Pablo Angel.
"It establishes credibility, it raises our profile in the international soccer market to have a player of this caliber to come to our club - and be interested in coming to our club," McCullers said. "So it accomplishes all of those things, and obviously competitively it provides us with one of the top players in the world, certainly in Argentinian football."
Barros Schelotto comes to a Crew team that had the worst record in the league last year and has failed to score in two ties so far this season.
McCullers declined to reveal salary figures. The signing was first reported by The Columbus Dispatch.
Angel will join former U.S. international midfielder Claudio Reyna at the Red Bulls, but unlike the other signings, Barros Schelotto will not join the Crew under MLS' "designated player rule."
Last November, the MLS adopted what it called its designated player rule, which allows clubs to sign international players outside the $2.1 million salary cap.
Barros Schelotto came to the Buenos Aires club in 1997 from Argentine side Gimnasia of La Plata. It didn't take long for him to become one of the nation's most popular soccer stars with almost a cult following.
He scored 87 goals in 302 matches over the next nine years. Team titles followed, including Copa Libertadores in 2000, 2001 and 2003, besides world club titles in 2000 and 2003.
Several Argentine publications have mentioned that the recently completed season might be his last for Boca Juniors. He made a late appearance on Sunday in the Superclasico, where he had made a name for himself for much of the last 10 years.
"Guille," as he is known in his native land, is one of the most decorated players in Argentina. His teams have also won six league championships.

Boca Juniors beats Velez Sarsfield 3-0
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - Goals by Juan Roman Riquelme, Martin Palermo and Clemente Rodriguez led Boca Juniors over Velez Sarsfield 3-0 in a second-round clash of Copa Libertadores soccer on Wednesday.
Riquelme booted in the opening score in the ninth minute, beating Velez goalkeeper Gaston Sessa with a hard-angled shot from inside the area to the delight of 40,000 mainly Boca fans.
In the 24th, Sessa rushed at Boca striker Rodrigo Palacio, blocking an attempted shot with his body but hitting Palacio on the head with his foot.
Palacio, though not seriously hurt, bled from a gash on the head and referee Hector Baldassi immediately expelled Sessa. Palermo blew the ensuing penalty kick, his shot soaring high over the crossbar.
In the second half, Boca dominated play but Sessa's replacement, Sebastian Peratta, made several saves.
But in the 60th, Palermo scored off a crisply angled header after a right pass from Pablo Ledesma.
Rodriguez got the third goal with a sprint down the left flank into the area and a right-footed shot that rippled the net.
They meet next Wednesday at the Velez stadium to determine which club advances to the quarterfinals of Latin America's club championship.
Boca, a five-time Copa Libertadores champion, reached the second round after placing second in Group 7 behind Toluca of Mexico. Velez, which won the Copa Libertadores once, qualified from Group 4.

Argentine Roundup, May 6
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - Boca Juniors edged closer to Argentine league leader San Lorenzo on Sunday, rallying from a two-goal deficit for a 3-3 draw at Argentinos Juniors to move within three points of the top.
Boca capitalized on Saturday's 2-1 loss at Velez Sarsfield by San Lorenzo, which has sat atop the Clausura table for the past four weeks. Estudiantes also climbed within three points, winning 2-1 at Nuevo Chicago on Friday.
The results left San Lorenzo atop with 31 points. River Plate was fourth with 25 points after it drew 1-1 on Sunday at home with Independiente.
In other 13th-round matches this weekend, it was: Arsenal 4, Belgrano 3 on Friday; Quilmes 2, Colon 1 and Racing 1, Banfield 1 on Saturday; while Sunday saw Newell's 1, Rosario Central 0; Lanus 1, Gimnasia Jujuy 1; and Godoy Cruz 2, Gimnasia La Plata 1.
Gonzalo Choy and Leonel Nunez gave Argentinos Juniors a 2-0 lead with goals in the 19th and 26th minutes. But Neri Cardozo's fifth goal of the season in the 32nd, Martin Palermo's league-leading 10th in the 58th, and Hugo Ibara's in the 65th rallied Boca to a 3-2 advantage.
Choy added a second in the 74th to deadlock the match.
On Saturday, Gustavo Balvorin's header and Mauro Zarate's free kick blast came nine minutes apart midway through the second half and was enough to lift Velez past San Lorenzo. Cristian Tula had San Lorenzo's lone goal in the 72nd.
Elsewhere, River Plate missed a chance to draw closer to the Clausura leaders, allowing a 52nd-minute equalizer by Independiente's Gaston Machin.
River led on an 18th-minute goal by Augusto Fernandez. Both sides finished with 10 men after Independiente's Guillermo Rodriguez was expelled in the 84th and River's Augusto Fernandez was sent off in the 90th for rough play.
Newell's Old Boys won a classic against Rosario Central as Oscar Cardozo notched the 68th-minute winner. Godoy Cruz beat Gimnasia y Esgrima with goals by Enzo Perez and Agustin Herbella. Gonzalo Silva had Gimnasia's goal from a second-half penalty kick.

Grit and heart
For Boca it was an extremely complicated match against Argentinos Juniors, a team that is a very strong on its own field in the La Paternal neighborhood.
After kick-off the home team was more mobile and played better than Boca, which seemed to have trouble in finding the pace of the game. At 19' of the first half Gonzalo Choy scored with a flying header that gave Argentinos the minimum edge.
Caruso Lombardi's team took advantage of the momentum gained through its successful start and 6' later increased its edge with another header. Leonel Núñez showed up on the left side and beat Caranta. 2-0.
At the home team's best moment Boca woke up thanks to a phenomenal shot by Neri Cardozo from almost 30 meters away. The man from Mendoza succeeded in putting the ball into the net at the upper left angle of Marcelo Pontiroli' goal.
The second half took off at a much slower pace than the first one. The game was even and none of the teams created danger. Until the great striker woke up.
Martín Palermo took advantage of a poor rebound of the home defence and, without giving the ball a chance to bounce off the ground, he connected a whipping right-footer Pontiroli found impossible to stop. This established the provisional draw, but there was more to come….
Immediately afterwards Hugo Ibarra went up at midfield and fired a poisonous left-footer that found its way into the net at an angle. Boca had reverted the initial result.
But there was still time for Choy to score again with another header by anticipating the action of Boca's defence as the result of a free-kick. 3-3 turned out to be the definitive result of the match.
Boca's reaction once more proved the team's grit and winning spirit . In view of San Lorenzo's defeat against Vélez Boca is now second in the standings, trailing the leader by three points.
