As a professional and dedicated bartender;) , I thought I should find out what all my fellow users are having to drink.

So feel free to list your favourite tipple and let the rest of SFN know what you're drinking habits are.

Also, since it's an open bar, why not post any drivel or interesting but useless facts or banter while you're here.

And since I'm the barman, feel free to ask for any advice on some of lifes problems while you're here as well, it'll go no further. That's what barmen are for. We're like priests, doctors and good hookers. What happens in the bar, STAYS in the bar!

Although, please note. I do get a day off sometimes so I can't help straight away. But leave your problem here, and I'll get back to you with a sympathetic ear and a large scotch ASAP.

Scotch, eh?

Is that a blended, malt or single malt? And which particular brand? I personally would recommend the 10 year old Glenkinchie. Very light and smooth and a favourite of mine....

Krug? Expensive tastes!! How about about a vintage Dom?

And that's a tricky conundrum. I'd say the average looking one. You can't do the deed ALL the time (although some have tried....;) ) and you need someone who you can relax around, have some beers, (or Krug in your case) and generally have fun with. Plus, if they're extremely good looking, you need to be on your game ALL the time, otherwise, some bigger and better guy will come along and snap her up in the January transfer window.

BRISTOLUK!!! Good to see you're still about!! This one's on the house....

And mixing Teachers, Grants or Bells isn't really sacrilege. Blended whisky's are fine to mix in my opinion.

Geez, Fusion!! I prescribe a healthy dose of Jagermeister and Red Bull, followed up with an intensive course of double Scotch, a potent one like a Glenfarclas 105 or even the MacPhail's Gold 106 (a particularly strong malt at a rather breath taking 60.5% volume or to the Americans, 121 degrees proof:shocked: .)

That should get you feeling manly again...

Well, big fella, you can have anything you like. How about a pitcher of my very own concoction, named "George Best's Liver". It contains 7cl Malibu, 7cl Bacardi, 7cl Tequila, 7cl Vodka, 3.5cl Jager with pineapple and grapefruit juice plus lemonade and a large dash of Angostura bitters garnished with lemon and lime wedges and crushed ice. It might sound like a ladies drink but it'll get you hammered!! And of course, this would be on the house for your leaving present.

Where you going?

Grey Goose seems popular with the Americans and is surprisingly smooth while the Scandinavians seem to have a preference for Absolut.

Me? I'm not a great Vodka fan I'm afraid (bad experience of it when i was younger y'see?) so I couldn't honestly recommend anything in particular. However, there is a vodka bar in Edinburgh that does serve chilli vodka which is a bit different and the spicyness of the chilli does tend to offset the rather nasty aftertaste I tend to find vodka gives you.

With regards to the Tyskie, I'll keep a case back for you (damn fine beer by the way) and I'll guarantee George Best's liver gets you hammered. That's the whole reason I named it after the great man!!;) :D

normthebarman
09-24-2006, 04:22 AM
Is that with salt and lemon? Or salt with lime? Or straight up?

What is the correct way to drink tequilla, Calif? Over here, salt and lemon is the norm de rigeur, but I have been told this is just because the rest of us non-tequilla drinking pussies can't handle it straight up.

And Calif, no offense mate, I'm glad to have your business but you seem to spend a LOT of time in the bar. Just what is it in your life that sends you to the "demon" drink?;) :D

Incidentally, what's everyones favourite drinking game. Here in St Andrews, all the University students are back, some of them freshers (or freshmans, for you guys over the pond, back in the "colonies").;) :D

And I dunno about you guys, but over here, nobody does drinking games like freshers. Now, I don't personally approve of drinking games. Booze is to be savoured, and enjoyed. Not rammed down your throught in one go, just so you can get pissed quicker. All that happens is you get pissed too quickly and end up out cold after a few hours.

A real bender should last for no less than 12 hours solid, and preferably, more than 24. But still, who am I to lecture?

So, what's your favourite drink game?

(Note to children - Please don't take this as a challenge to see if you can drink for 24 hours. It takes years of hardcore drinking to be able to handle that kind of abuse to the liver. Remember kids, having your stomach pumped is not a good way to spend a Saturday night.

For one, it cuts down your drinking time dramatically......;) :D )

As a welcome back, have a large MacCallan 25 year old malt, on the house of course. That should help you feel a bit better!

And for the 24th, I'll keep some tables set aside for you, maybe even try and get some Jelen in.

How about a copule of bottles of Innis & Gunn? It's not the strongest beer I have (that belongs to Chimay Blue, a rather potent Belgian beer at 9% volume, or, 18% proof for any American friends, with an almost port-like flavour....) but it is still quite strong at a 7.7% volume with a slight hint of whisky and an undertone of orange and treacle.

Brewed in Edinburgh, my home town, it's aged for 77 days in an old whisky barrell, hence the infusion of the whisky flavour to the beer. Very, VERY, nice stuff!:)

And I'm sorry to hear about your sig, compadre, why's it disappeared? If it's to do with size, me thinks I may have to modify mine...

No problem, lads, I've ordered some extra Mezcal for our Chivas friend and Fusion...!, well, we'll we can work our way through my scotch supply!

Anyone else up for a lock-in?

(note to non-Scots - a "lock-in" is when everyone gets to stay in the bar when it's shut and get pissed. Due to the hours I work, the only time i can really get on here is the early hours of the morning, when the bar's shut. Hence, the lock-in.)

Ooooooooh, vodka & Red Bull? That can be dangerous. I've got a mate who can drink shedloads but as soon as he's on the vodka Red Bull's, he nearly always gets lifted by the police. He's went to hit friends (male and female), cars, family members and on occasions, shop windows (resulting in him paying large fines and having his hand bandaged up for a month cause he sliced all his tendons!!:) )

But, since it's just this once, I'll do it for you (as long as you pay for any damages!;) :D )

I've heard of Stag but never came across it personally I'm afraid. And never heard of Carib before either. Sorry mate. If you let me know what it's like, I'll try and get some in. I think we're up to 72 different types of beers that we stock (although, only 65 of those are permanent!!) and I'm always happy to try and get some more new ones.

Mind you, we don't get a lot of caribbean visitors in St Andrews. Don't know why, I mean, we've got a beach and everything!!;) :D

Maybe it's the weather....

The closest I've had to a Caribbean beer is Stingray when I visited the Caymans. Very nice it was too and I'll be looking forward to trying it out again next year when I go back.:)

Nope, thats at 15, you can drive with someone who has has a lisence. At 16 you can drive but with limited passengers. You have a curfew...here where I live its midnight because some kids might work that late. At 18 you get your full lisence. Also if youre caught driving past your curfew, you lisence is revoked and you can not try to get another until you're 18.

what helps europe is that the cities are also connected by trains. So u can basically live in a different city like vigevano or pavia but work at milan and u just take the train. then u take the metropolitana, tram or whatever but yes, the transportation system in the usa is totally quite different. You do need a car to move around.

lol, i dont eat airplane food, its disgusting. Ur flight was 2 hrs that is nothing. I travel to Turkey nonstop 10 hours, then wait for 2 hours at the airport take another flight to Ankara which is an hour long, then go to the bus terminal which is an hour away from the airport in Ankara, then wait an hour there, then i go by bus to eskisehir which takes 2-3 hours. This is another difference between the Old Continent and America...

what helps europe is that the cities are also connected by trains. So u can basically live in a different city like vigevano or pavia but work at milan and u just take the train. then u take the metropolitana, tram or whatever but yes, the transportation system in the usa is totally quite different. You do need a car to move around.

something cool in germany and the netherlands is that a lot of people use a bike as a way of transportation.

Yea but as u said cities. In America NYC has like hundreds of suburbs, u cant expect us to have trains going everywhere/

U should have trains 'coz there are hundreds of suburbs!!!!That what trains are about:connecting the small cities to the big ones, the places with only a house with the places like NYC!!!!

In Milan there are a lot of suburbs that have almost only the "station" and three habitants!!

Fenerliyim
11-13-2006, 07:29 PM
Thats wat we have buses for. For trains u need to build train tracks and that would take forever. Plus here all towns border each other, the train would be going in zig zags, up and down, and just going in circles. Not a good idea imo

Edit: U have 3 habitants, we have thousands in each suburb

We have more inhabitants which means they are more spread out, there are bus stops every couple blocks. How can we build trains stations every 2 blocks. If i live in one part of the town i dont want to walk a mile to get to the train station.

and the other thing, most people have cars, i mean some people might have cheaper ones while others more expensive ones but they still get u where u want to go.

All right...that's one of the difference between u and us...We have difference points of u 'coz u live in a country where the trains are not so used like here, and I live in a country where not everyone can hav a car....

thats true, you can have an accident even if you drove only a couple seconds but the point he was trying to make is that you have a higher probablitiy of having an accident since you are on the road a long time. Days, nights, the job can really be exausting.

Well, my family isn't rich either. My dad has been driving trucks for about 3 and a half years now. He usually does two trips to the East Coast per week, mostly NY and PA. He gets $1.13 cents per mile. He makes about $1,000 to $2,000 per week after he pays for fuel and the truck payment, which ends up to be about $1,000 dollars per week. So basicly, weekly, hes guaranteed over $1,000.

Calif is right, it is somewhat of a dangerous job. Most of the accidents that involve trucks are when the truck flips over. Usually people come out ok if they have their seatbelts on. Some people don't get so lucky. One of my relatives dad's is on the verge of dying because he went off the road and hit a tree head on.

Bloody hell!!!! I've been away too long. The first extended break I've had from here in ages and this is the busiest trade I've had!!!

Yes the bar's still here for general chat, especially regarding booze, but I've been working my butt off in my actual bar recently and haven't had a chance to keep up to date!

So yes Emode, you can have a glass of water but only 'cos you're the designated driver!;) :D Normally, I don't do soft drinks but for you, I'll make an exception...

With regards to the driving conversations, I've never driven. Never had to as the places I've lived (Edinburgh, Livingston and St Andrews) have either had decent public transport or are small enough to walk around anyway.

Also, strange as it may seem, I feel driving would actually hinder my freedom as if I've got a car, it means I can't pop into the nearest pub for a couple of beers whenever I want!!!

And as an apology for my absence, the next round of drinks are on the house!!;) :D

I don't normally do cocktails personally but since business is slow.......;) :D

To be honest, the Long Island is one of few cocktails I approve of, namely because of the alcohol content. If I'm going to mix spirits, I'd much rather do a pitcher. Quicker, easier and far more forgiving to make, there's also more of it to drink!
