Italy mourn Facchetti loss Monday 4 September, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Italian football is in mourning after Inter President Giacinto Facchetti passed away at the age of 64 on Monday.
The former defender had been suffering with illness for some time and lost his battle earlier today.
Born in Treviglio, near Bergamo, Facchetti enjoyed a stunning career both at club and international level.
He became a legend with the Nerazzurri after making his debut in May 1961 and spending 18 seasons with the outfit until he hung up his boots in 1978.
A goalscoring left-back, Facchetti scored an amazing 75 goals in 634 games with the Inter shirt.
He also won four Scudetti, two intercontinental titles, two European Cups and a Coppa Italia.
In January 2004, he was promoted from Vice-President to President of Inter by owner Massimo Moratti.
During Facchetti’s brief reign, the club won two Italian Cups, an Italian Super Cup and were this summer awarded the 2005-06 Scudetto.
Rest in peace Facchetti :( a true Inter legend

This is a real tragedy, right before the season starts. I didn't even know he was sick!

When I heard the news, I just had to get out of bed in the middle of the night and post on this board to express my condolences to Fachetti's family and sadness for Inter. We lost a truly great champion, a legend of world football and pioneer of the fullback position.
I knew he was't feeling well, but didn't expect this...

I sympathis with you.
Today has been a dark day for me my friend. I lost two "ambassadors" of the world. One was a fellow compatriot, Steve Irwin, who despite being crazy at times was a true conservationist. Earth has lost its friend.
The other being Fachetti, a champion and gentleman of football. The world of football has lost a friend...

I just realized that this life is so weired! when it seems to give you some happiness.. it suddenly strikes you with a tragedy.. I had that alot that I knew that with all the success we did so far, with all the changes that Inter had for good.. winning the cup agin last year, then super cup and honored with the scudetto since years! making those succeful signings.. I felt that I should be ready now for a bad news anytime.. I didnt know that Facchetti was sick.. damn this news really srtiked me.. :(
R.I.P Facchetti, and my condolences to all the interista and his family.

This is a black day, for Inter, and also for Italian football. However I'm glad of the fact that he had the chance to see his Inter been given the 14th infamous Scudetto, weeks before his death. Football fans will always remember him as a great Inter legend, both on and off the pitch.

What a loss. Tragic. I realised something was up after the comments made after the Super Cup victory. But I never thought Fachetti was no death's door. This is so upsetting. One of the most humble and dignified men you could find in life, let alone football. A true legend of the game and this year Inter must deliver the Scudetto for their hero.

Dear Cipe,
I didn't manage to tell you what I wanted to for fear of making you understand that time was inexorable and the illness terrible.
I am sorry, but I think I should thank you most of all for the patience you have always had with me. For your eyes that smiled, until the end, at the enthusiasm or the irony with which I tried to overcome the difficult times with you.
A few days ago you spoke to me with hardly any voice left - and with the expression of someone who loves you - about Inter, projecting your thoughts towards a future beyond our possibilities, humble, ignorant and human.
A few months ago I asked you, half joking and half serious, why we never managed to have a referee as a friend, so we could feel protected at least once. And you, with an expression that was both soft and severe, replied to me that I couldn't ask you this because you weren't capable.
Fantastic. Your great dignity wasn't capable of it, your natural honesty wasn't capable of it. Neither was the sportsmanship that remained intact since your first day at Inter, with Herrera who mistakenly called you Cipelletti, and since then all of us have called you Cipe. Gentle, intelligent, courageous, reserved, far from every vulgar reaction.
Thank you again for having honoured Inter, and with her, all of us.

that was really a terrible day for all inter fans and true football fans worldwide. i would like to offer my condolences to all of them and facchetti's family. i just know that this tragedy will inspire the players to give all they have to try and win every competition they will participate in this season in facchetti's honour.
if there is a silver lining in this cloud, giacinto facchetti at least got to see inter returning to winning ways and assembling the best team in years. it must have comforted him.
rest in peace, cipe. your dedication, your gentlemanlike conduct and devotion to internazionale will never be forgotten.
