on Saturday the 26th of August the 1st serious action in 2006/2007 Italian season will start as Scudetto and Coppa Italia Champions Internazionale Milano will host on their stadium in Milano Gussippe Miazza in San Siro AS Roma Scudetto and Coppa italia 2nd place.
Both Clubs strengthen their squads with big names and especially Inter who were very succesfull in the Transfer Market and Roberto Mancini was given the players he wanted 2 cover all problems in his formation.
With new left back world cup hero Italian Fabio Grosso and also Brazilian Maxwell,on the right back he got 25 years old Monaco's Maicon as in the midline he signed French and ex Juve player Patrick Vieira 2 replace juan Sebastian Veron.Big names came in the front line as Inter got 2 of the heavy names in Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Hernan Crespo.
Inter had some friendlies and joined the Amsterdam Tournament and got 2nd place but not with full squad, and under the new full team Inter played 2 friendlies against Mallorca and won 1 - 0 when Maicon scored and tied scoreless with Sporting Lisbon.
Roma also succeded in adding good players like Sampdoria's Max Tonnetto and Ascoli's Cassetti and Rennes young player Faty with also getting back Egyptian striker Mido from the Tottenham loan.
Roma also played some friendlies like Hamburg and lost 1-0 and also same result with Porto.
Both Teams will know their Groups in CL on Friday before their game.Inter Milan are also last season Super Coppa Holders when they were representing the coppa Italia winner and faced Scudetto champions Juventus in Delli Alppi and won 1-0 in extra time with Veron who left the team.
there was business between the 2 teams as Inter Milan's David Pizarro joined Roma this season in a Co Ownership and Roma's Oliver Dacourt joined Inter as a free Transfer.

Last season Results :

both team faced each other 4 times last season and these were the results.
- Serie A (San Siro) Inter Milan 2 - 3 AS Roma
- Serie A (Olympico) AS Roma 1 - 1 Inter Milan
- Coppa Italia Final (Olympico) AS Roma 1 - 1 Inter Milan
- Coppa Italia final (San Siro) Inter Milan 3 - 1 AS Roma.

Key Players

- Inter Milan :

* Zlatan Ibrahimovic :
The player joined Inter this season from Juventus,The swedish Striker didn't have a good season with Juventus last year and hoping 2 do better in Inter,Inter Fans are putting a lot of hopes on him 2 be the best Partner with Adriano.

* Adriano :
Adriano was one of the worst players in Inter last season and failed 2 impress whether with Inter or Brazilian national team in the world cup but he remainson of Inter best players and the key for the Team, all fans believe that if he is in top form Inter will be better.

- AS ROMA :

* Francesco Totti :
Totti is Roma's king and the most faithful player for the team he had a good season last year but suffered an injury that made him out of action for 4 month, but he returned in the World cup and was a main factor in Italy world Champions.

* Amantino Mancini :
The Brazilian winger was one of the best players in Serie A last season and one of the big factors of Roma's last season record in winning and he was also the 2nd top scorer behind Totti,he will form a lot of problems for Inter defence as he did last season.

this will be the official match discussion thread and i want all of u 2 join and give ur oppinion about the match, and enjoy the start of 2006/2007 Serie A italian season.

i think Inter would wipe the pitch with them, for inter not to win this match it would be a sin. the odds and skill are clearly in thier corner

True

On paper Inter could probably beat Roma with our second team. But how many times have we said "easy win match for Inter" before??

I haven't been too impressed with Inter's friendlies, but I hope by the time the super cup comes around, the players will have improved their fitness and understood team tactics better.

We have been poor in the friendlies. I hope that it is not an indication of complacency amongst the squad. If Inter are to win they need to be fired up and hungry for victory. The defence need to be really solid and Cambiasso should stay tight on Totti. Adriano and Ibra should start and will need to gel in the attack immediately.

...im not so sure wether we will wipe the floor with them...lasts eason Spaletti teached MANCIO a lession on San Sirro....if he fails to win this valuable trophey then he will lost all the support...

games arent played on papers and maybe Roma want 2 express that they will be contenders in Serie A they have a really good squad and a very solid midfield.
Maybe Inter failed 2 impress in the friendlies cause they use 2 play in very short period of time like the 1 day rest between Mallorca and sporting games.
i think Totti must be left more for Vieira and Cambiasso wait for any surprises from Pizarro ,De Rossi or Perrotta.
th wingers will be more handed with Grosso takin Mancini and Zanetti taking Taddei.

King Adriano

but guys do u think Pizarro will play a big role against the team that left him almost 1 year on the bench ??

MANCINI NAMES SUPER CUP SQUAD
Friday, 25 August 2006 14:12:02

APPIANO GENTILE - Roberto Mancini has named a 21-player squad for Saturday's Italian Super Cup match against Roma at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (kick-off at 20:45):

Goalkeepers: 1 Francesco Toldo, 12 Julio Cesar Soares, 79 Fabian Carini

Defenders: 4 Javier Zanetti, 11 Fabio Grosso, 13 Maicon, 23 Marco Materazzi, 25 Walter Samuel, 77 Marco Andreolli

Midfielders: 5 Dejan Stankovic, 7 Luis Figo, 14 Patrick Vieira, 15 Olivier Dacourt, 19 Esteban Cambiasso, 21 Santiago Solari, 31 Cesar

Strikers: 8 Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 9 Julio Ricardo Cruz, 10 Adriano, 18 Hernan Crespo, 20 Alvaro Recoba

So no Cordoba then? He must be injured. I hope Matrix can take his world cup form into this game. If he can and he can continue it then he could be a starter for the remainder of the season. I expect Maicon and Crespo to definitely be our 2 super-subs if we get to a stage of the game where a win is looking difficult. Maicon's pace will really change the game. If necessary Il Capitano can shift up to right wing or even into the central of midfield as he has been used on occasions in pre-season.

2-1 Inter.

yes i'm waiting for Maicon 2 be our winning card in that game if it is closed and if Adriano and Ibra keep missing easy goals like last season so Crespo or Cruz can do the job.

Yea, with Serie A still some way away it is nice to be able to watch Inter in a competitive fixture.

APPIANO GENTILE - Part one of Roberto Mancini's pre-Italian Super Cup news conference:

Mancini, what kind of crowd are you expecting for your new-look team's first match?
"I hope that the Inter fans who are due back from their holidays on Sunday come back a day early. It's the first match of the new season and it would be good to have a lot of people at the stadium."

Ibrahimovic did some individual work today. Is he the only doubt for tomorrow evening's game?
"No. He did everything with the team apart from the final training game. But he has no problems. It was planned work."

In what shape are Inter ahead of the first match of the season?
"We're still not one hundred percent, the only way you can reach a good level of fitness is by playing competitive matches. It is also true that we have played some good friendlies against teams who were further ahead than us in their preparations. We aren't in top shape, but I don't think any team in the Italian championship is at the moment."

This is the first of a series of matches that will see Inter start as favourites. Have you realised this?
(Mancini smiles) "We realised this after the Birra Moretti Trophy in Naples... We have understood that something has changed. But starting as favourites is normal and it happened in the other years when Inter, Juventus and Milan started the season as favourites. Juventus are in Serie B this year and Milan have a small points penalty, so this makes Inter favourites. But you can never take anything for granted in football, and this is the nice thing about this sport. You can never take anything for granted, and it will be another tough year in which the greater responsibilities must not create problems for us."

But are you sure that Juventus will be in Serie B?
"For the moment they are. But I don't want to talk about these things because there are only arguments after."

Does your choice of strikers tomorrow depend on what you have seen in the last few friendly matches?
"Yes, but it also depends on physical condition. We have only been a full squad for six or seven days. There are a lot of players who started their preparations later."

Is this why Adriano is in better physical shape than Ibrahimovic at the moment?
"Yes. Adriano has made almost complete preparations. Crespo arrived on 5 or 6 August and has less work in his legs. Those who started pre-season preparations on 13 July are definitely in better shape than the others. We should also remember that those who come from the World Cup aren't that far behind because they didn't have a long holiday."

In tomorrow's match are you likely to field those who won the Tim Cup, as a kind of reward?
"I could do, but there will definitely be a new player in the middle."

Will Inter's big summer signing Ibrahimovic be unveiled at the Meazza tomorrow?
"He is among those called up. We will see."

What kind of Roma team are you expecting to face tomorrow evening?
"Roma play well and have good players in their squad. They have a certain tactical module that doesn't give you any reference points. It will be a hard game and they will cause a few problems for us."

What do you think of Inter's Champions League group?
"It could have gone better but this is the Champions League and it could have gone worse. It is not just a hard group for Inter, it is also tough for the other teams."

GiorgioII

APPIANO GENTILE - Part two of Roberto Mancini's pre-Italian Super Cup news conference:

Speaking in yesterday's press conference in Rome, David Pizarro said that Inter have a very strong team and that all you need to do is field the right formation. Are you capable of doing this?
"Pizarro is a great player and he is like a younger brother to me because he is a great guy. I don't believe he said certain things, as always there will have been the usual strained interpretations. He is definitely not the kind of person who starts polemics, and there is no reason to."

Could selling him to Roma - one of your biggest rivals for the Scudetto - have been a mistake?
"Like he himself said, Pizarro probably needs to play regularly because he's not a young player anymore. He chose the best solution for him and I think that sometimes you have to make players happy, even by giving them to a Scudetto rival. Pizarro deserves to play and I think he did well to join Roma if this is the best solution for him."

Are we wrong to think that in tomorrow's match against Roma Zanetti will play on the right and Adriano will play in attack?
"This is possible."

If Zanetti starts the match instead of Maicon, would this be due to the fact that Brazilian player Mancini plays on that side of the pitch for Roma?
"No. If Zanetti plays it will be because he has been a regular in that position for years, and we're playing in the Super Cup tomorrow. But Maicon won't have any problems. He has changed team and league and he can definitely improve. But he is such a strong player that he sometimes makes up for lack of position with strength. He won't have any big problems if he plays."

Is tomorrow's match the last match of the pre-season or the first match of the season?
"It is the first competitive match, the season's curtain raiser. And it is an important match because a victory would mean a good start. But it will be hard because Roma are an excellent team that has been strengthened, and they are also in good shape even though the league still hasn't started. But it is important to make a good start."

So will there be no more experiments from tomorrow?
"We have experimented in a few of the pre-season matches to see what our tactical options are. But every coach tries out the various options when the result is not important."

So will Inter always play with a 4-4-2 this year?
"Not always. We have a number of options that we have tried out in pre-season. The players know this, and even if the formation changes we can still play well."

GiorgioII
08-25-2006, 04:22 PM
APPIANO GENTILE - Part three of Roberto Mancini's pre-Italian Super Cup news conference:

Will there be any more reinforcements to your squad before the transfer window shuts?
"No. I think the squad is complete."

There is talk of a possible swap deal involving Adriano and Ronaldo. Is this possible?
"Not that I know of. I believe that Ronaldo could join Milan, or even stay at Real Madrid. We, however, have Adriano and I don't think anything like this will happen."

Milan have just announced they are not buying Ronaldo. What do you think about this?
"I think that Ronaldo could stay at Real Madrid. They are a great team and they are unlikely to get rid of him."

Staying on the subject of Ronaldo, would Milan be better off getting him or would Real be better off keeping him?
"I can only give my technical opinion of Ronaldo. I think he is still one of the best strikers around."

Another transfer market question. Would the arrival of Camoranesi from Juventus be useful to you?
"Camoranesi is a world champion but we have cover and we have a lot of good players."

What changes in Inter's pool of strikers following the departure of Obafemi Martins?
"First of all, I send a big hug to Martins. I heard from him on the phone earlier and wished him all the best because he's a great boy and he deserves it. He definitely has the qualities needed to do very well. He was different from other strikers and in some aspects we're losing something, but we have bought other great players and we will try to use them to their full potential."

Do you miss your 'exchanges of words' with Luciano Moggi?
"I won't reply to this question."

The first "official" game of the season. Let us start with a trophy which will bring confidence to our players. After "winning" the Scudetto last season on paper, this year we must convince everybody that we're the most powerful football force in europe. To do so, we'll have to defeat our opponents on the pitch, not in some court of justice.

Yours truly,

Massimo

King Adriano After Match Report.

Tim Super Coppa : Inter Milan vs Roma

In a great atmosphere as usual in San Siro all fans were waiting for the full shape of their team Inter Milan after all these players they signed and also a big group of Roma fans came 2 Guisseppe Miazza 2 see their team in the new season and hoping 2 have a good game as they know their opponent wont be easy one.In a game that the media called it Clean Match Inter the announced Scudetto winner and winner of Coppa Italia will face again the 2nd place in both scudetto and coppa Italia.
The match started with a control from Inter but with no real chances except for a cross that came from Figo after faking both Mexes and Panucci to Dejan Stankovic who headed the ball 2ward Ibrahimovic who was infront of the goal but Chivu saved the ball and headed it away,3 minutes later Roma had their 1st counter attack and from 3 passes they made the ball 2 Mancini who was alone infront of Toldo but missed his left shot.Roma started 2 take the advantage and took control especially by Aquilani and surprisingly in the 13th minute from a mid cross by Totti there was a mis-understanding between captain Zanetti and Toldo and Mancini headed the ball 2 score Roma's first goal, and just like Serie A last season 1st leg Inter were shocked by the goal and strted 2 play randomly which lead 2 a mistake in the midfield and from a missed pass by Vieira Aquilani cut the ball and made a 1:2 with Taddei 2 find himself infront of Toldo scoring the 2nd Goal for Roma. What a shock it was 2 Mancini, the players and the fans, even Roma fans and Spalletti couldnt believe they are up 2-0 in just 25 minutes.
The corruption continued and while fans were excpecting a come back by Inter,Roma again made their perfect third counter attack a low cross by Totti passed between Samuel and Materazzi and Grosso who were marking their men and forgot about coming from the middle alone again Alberto Aquilani who scored Roma's third in the 34th minute.
But before 1st half end a foul was awrded 2 Inter from 40 yards taken by Figo and his cross faced new signing Patrick Vieira's Head 2 score Inter 1st Goal and Vieira's 1st in an Inter jersey.
Both teams went 2 the locker rooms with an advantage for Roma 3-1,Inter fans expected a better 2nd half especially after that Vieira's goal in the end of the 1st period exactly in the 45th minute.
Inter started the 2nd half with a full control and after 10 minutes Mancini made his 1st substitution and took away left back Fabio Grosso and replaced him with Maicon and moved Zanetti to the left back and Maicon on the right,a couple of minutes and Crespo came in the game for struggeling hopless Adriano.
it didnt take too long for the Argentinian Scorpeon 2 put his mark cause in the 65th minute from a Stankovic cross he headed the ball before Chivu and scored Inter's second Goal 3-2 Roma is still up but Inter was better and was close to tie.
Ibrahimovic who had a good game in my oppinion except for missing such easy chances missed an open chance just after Crespo's goal but he put his assist in the 75th minute after a great pass from Crespo a back heal pass that made Ibrahimovic face Doni but he saw Vieira in a better place and gave him the ball 2 finish the goal and now things are back where they started 3-3 what a game so far Mancini's substitutes made their effect and he successfully brought his team back.
Ibrahimovic again missed a one on one chance with keeper Doni that would have ended the match but now teams must have 2 go for Extra time.
in the extra time it was clear that Inter had the advantage and was looking for the win and after just 5 minutes from a 19 yards far foul Luis Figo translated his great performance in the match for a great goal.
Inter spent the rest of the extra time wasting time infront of amazed Roma and they gave up all hope 2 come back and match ended 2 announce Inter again super coppa champions.

i havent watched the game, but im dying to see it hehe ... could it be that mancini's substitutes actually won the game for inter? mancini actually made the correct changes to win the cup for us? hehe who would have thought! then again with a team like ours it would have been hard to lose in the first place so i cant give him that much credit!

What a silly game
I guess Figo and Vieira deserve to share the man of the match award. Crespo scored an important goal again, he has always been reliable in cup finals. Ibrahimovic proved that while he isn't a reliable scorer, he makes things happen offensively. Adriano still hasn't found his form.

But seriously, the defence has to improve. What happened there in the first thirty minutes? This has been a serious problem for Mancini's Inter, the lack of concentration in defence.
It was a nice victory, for sure, but after that performance I am also very worried about the team. You just can't play like this in serie A.

I think if Cordoba had played than Roma wouldnt have got those early goals. He is quicker to respond and much more capable at coping with the likes of Mancini. Plus Roma dont actually play with any forwards so its hard for the centrebacks to know who to mark but they still should of coped better
For me Deki or JZ were man of the match. The two of them were all over the pitch. Deki had such a great game.

The first half was pathetic. There is no other way to describe it. Roma just tore through our defence and there was no movement in attack. Many players performed well individually, especially in midfield, but as a unit they were still inefficient. It took until the second half began for Inter to begin to play. The level of play was improved even further once Maicon and Crespo entered the field, with Inter switching to something more like a 4-3-3 later on. I hope the second half Inter is the one we will be seeing for the remainder of the season. If that is the case then nobody will stand in our way. If we play like we did in the first half then Mancini will be out of a job by Christmas.

F.Toldo 6/10 - One good save from Aquilani, but was helpless on his other goals. Made a right hash of trying to stop Mancini on the first goal. Made some strong catches in the second half.
J.Zanetti 7/10 - A really strong performance. At right back and left back he shone, making endless attacking forays into the opposition half. Defensively caught out of position on a couple of occasions though.
M.Materazzi 6/10 - Had a first half shocker, but improved in the second half.
W.Samuel 6/10 - Similar to Matrix. Roma ran rings around him in the first 45, but he was strong in the second period.
F.Grosso 5.5/10 - Did very little of any note in the first half, although nothing wrong particularly. Expected more of him though.
L.Figo 7/10 - A constant threat. Apart from the fact that his legs tired out late on, it was impossible to imagine that he is 33 years old. He played like a 20 year old and drifted around the park, creating havoc wherever he went. A perfect free-kick to win the game.
P.Vieira 7/10 - His leadership qualities shone through with two perfectly timed strikes. He advanced further forward than he did under Capello and hence was more of a threat. Tackled and won the ball well in the middle also.
E.Cambiasso 7.5/10 - An almost perfect display in the middle of the park. He hardly put a fut wrong. Distributed possession really well and tackled strongly. He is fast becoming one of the best in the world.
D.Stankovic 7/10 - Another good performance from a midfield warrior. Ran all over the park and won lots of possession. Looked dangerous when running at the defence also.
Adriano 5.5/10 - Very poor. Made little movement into the box. He held onto the ball better than in previous performances and looked for support, but resembled the weakest of attacking threats.
Z.Ibrahimovic 6/10 - Amazed he stayed on as he was even worse than Adriano until the Brazilian was taken off. Once L'Imperatore had departed his performance increased though and he seemed to think he could take on everybody. Such an arrogant player and often it didn't quite work for him:D .

Maicon 6.5/10 - Ran very well down the right hand flank, causing problems for Cufre.
H.Crespo 6/10 - Poached his goal superbly with a brilliant header and moved around the penalty area really well, creating more space for the other Inter players.
O.Dacourt 5.5/10 - He wasn't on the pitch long enough to make a lasting impression, but he passed well.

i am still away...

pretty interesting game and fantastic comeback - which says it all about the team morale and our new signings!

however, I was so upset with first half that did not really appreciate winning the copa :(

as we spoke in the other thread Mancini does not deserve this position and shall do a lot of work if we are to win Scudetto or CL. We were tactically outscored by Romans especially in the first half, they only lacked few classy players to survive second half on right wing, which we torn apart with Maicon.
The major problem is the tactics, we played a static game with no ideas or team movements, Roma was much more mobile and this allowed them to score some goals.

At the end of the day they played at San Siro against Star packed Inter at which stars like Figo and Vieira ignored the coaching shit and put their own version of tactical display and you know what happened. Figo was a hero! Fantastic display! The team suffered much more than it should to clinch this game and if we want to win the scudetto this way - it's never gonna happen even if Pele would emerge at Inter!

That's my version of the game.

Toldo - 6 (apart from that mistake he was all right)
JZ - 7 what those endless & useless runs were about?
Grosso - 6 perhaps he needs to recover from WC physically and emotionally
Matrix - 5 same as Grosso
Samuel - 6 nothing special yet, partnership with Matrix was bad
Stanko - 7,5 put a steady performance
Cambiasso - 7 good
Vieira - 8 two goals and used his brains, key transfer already
Figo - 9 my god, he's a legend and a leader and he showed that
Adriano - 6.5 at least he was trying to do something, wasn't that useless
Crespo - 7.5 did his best, but damn he is losing speed :(
Maicon - 7.5 well done, dominated his side
Dabo - ? who cares :silly:

Ibra - 7 two misses were bad, but given this was his first game, I would rate him as very promising player

well i think our problem was only Team Chemistry and as long as Roma has great team chemistry for playing last season with that formation on the other hand 4 or 5 changes were in our team so it took a half time 2 respond but the responce was really heavy now with few matches u will se Inter's second half a lot.

our tactical arrangements are poor and the team lacks brains going forward... we may not survive in a long season.

to give you a sense: at WC spain had excellently gelled team, but were playing with wrong tactics, so France beat them up... When you watch teams like Barcelona, Arsenal, MU, Chelsea - you know what they want and what's their style and etc.; when you watch Inter or Real Madrid - it's a tactical mess and it was the same last season, no changes so far...

i know what ur saying Zek but both Inter and Real Madrid are in changing situations, there are big changes in the team so it will take a lil time 2 rest on a certain tactics, fortunatly for us season start in 9 of September but Real Madrid season already started but i am sure Capello will find his tactics soon and so does Mancini.

I agree with Zek, Mancini still lack the experiance to creat a stable team, this problem we didnt get over yet.. now he has one of the best Inter sides since many years, we have like 5 or 6 players that can be discribes as the best in thier positions in the world and still we went down with 3 goals in the first half of the super game, the come back came mostly when Rome coach started making defending subs which was a huge mistake, what Mancini did is taking advantages of this mistake and we won thanks to the super stars we had, but if we were playing aginst a side with a more clever coach we would have lost like 4 or 5-1.. that`s with no doubt.
I hope Mancini would make up his mind for this club`s sake :(

no doubt Mancini made huge mistakes but at last he could capitalize on others mistakes and change the game.

Well at the least it seems that our team has the right mentality (I guess I can give Mancini credit for that) along with world class players. Inter will overpower most teams, though like you say it won't always be imaginative or pretty. We'll probably create loads of half-chances, miss a bunch of them, and then fortunately manage to finish off a couple. But even after wins we might still feel slightly unsatisfied since Inter probably will never hit that top gear and play truly elegant football.

quite optimistic ;) i am afraid that we will use a lot of effort to win games and will run off steam close to end of season; and reliance on a quality of players may create more problems...
