How did you start watching Irish football?........ just wondering

I am 3/4 Sicilian and 1/4 Irish so after Palermo i like to watch Irish soccer. My Grandmother is from Cork so i support them best. It is enjoyable to watch for me because it is not as much a buisness as the English clubs and the guys just love to play and go all out all the time. It is more physical then Italian and Spanish leagues even if its less skilled but its a refreshing change to watch sometimes. I play football myself at a low level and i was coached this summer by a player from Cork City and that got me watching it a bit more too.

Actually i live in NYC lol. Damn straight Palermo is in first with you and don't worry we will wipe the floor with Samp this weekend we rested our starters during our UEFA game.

Derry i enjoy watching along with Cork City they are my favorite Irish teams but i am not nearly as fanatical about either as i am with Palermo.

How do you watch Irish games? Is thier a way to get them online? I get them from time to time on tv and replays and all but i can't watch them with nearly as much regularity as i would like too.

Laury84
11-04-2006, 08:07 AM
Idem...I watch the replays in internet 'cause in Italy there isn't a television that shows the eircom league....shit...I love Ireland and that's the reason why I started to watch the eircom..
What do u do in NYC?

Sicilian
11-05-2006, 01:29 AM
well i was born and raised here, my parents are from the places i mentioned above, but i was born here. I like watching the irish league because it is so much different from Serie A, not as skilled but they play with heart and it is good fun to watch.

Laury84
11-05-2006, 08:36 AM
Yeah...I agree with u...I would like to see the entire matches but in italy i think that nobody (except me) would like to see the eircom league, so I will not huv the possibility to see them on the national tv!!sigh sigh...

I don't know about Italians, but Irish are definately one of the best people in the world. Just Joking.

Germans and Irish also have a lot in common. To respect the friendly relationship between the two nations, and becuase Ireland played Germany in our first post WWII game, we decided to honour the Irish we used ( and sometimes still do) a green jersey for all away matches.

Historically, and religiously we may not have much in common, but I remember reading that Irish exchange students come to Germany on a very large number, and vice versa.

Yeats was influenced by Geothe, and Geothe influenced by the Irish country side. So our fine arts are influenced by each other. And most importantly, Ireland is happy when England lose, and so are we :p

Ireland also knocked out Holland from the WC 02.Thank you guys. That created one of the most famous fan chants of the WC 2002 and 2006.

Actually i always supported the English team. Its just that they take the rivalry a bit too far. England would always be the 3rd or 4th team I support in cups.
So, once in a while watching them lose is fun.

With Holland, it is a different story altogether. :yell: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

All right....so watch something else!!!!And call it football not soccer,we're in the european section...

Sicilian

The dirtiest team without a doubt is Portugal, but France, Holland, were undoubtedly were worse then Italy and many others were on par. We were not anym,.ore boring then most aside from hte French game. But enoguh with this shit this is the Irish section.

its cool to know that someone from a huge city like milan would like to come to our small humble city.. :D ....the diffrence between our Brandywell Stadium and San Siro is we have a dog track :) lol
Derry City FC might actually be entered into the champions league this year as Shelbourne (who beat us to the league on goal diffrence) don't appear o have the funds for champions league....
so hopefully...AC or Inter could oneday meet us...then you could come to see the city...:)

its not overly expensive and actually i would think that compared to major cities in europe it is relatively cheap.....e.g to go out for a meal in Derry would set you back about £8 sterling.......it shouldn't be too hard to exchange your euros as we are situated on the border of the Republic of Ireland....

yeah i go as often as i can to the Brandywell....went to the amazing cup final in dublin aswell......don't know if you would have heard but it was infact the greatest cup final in football history ( after Liverpool v AC Milan, Istanbul:D ) we played St Patricks Athletic....1-0 down at half time......brought it back to 1-1.....then by full time it was 2-2....(Derry scoring a last minute injury time goal) then by half time extra time....we were down 3-2.....right after the short interval....we brought it back to 3-3 and then.....in the very last minute of the match.....an o.g. won the cup for us!! :D

sorry about the essay but this really is what football is about in my opinion.....

what i don't get also is how lenient was the whole investigation in the "match fixing scandal" towards AC? :S seemed like every time the appealed they less points taken away..and regained their place in europe......thats a scandal in its own right!

0ooo u reli should see the North-West derby then.....Derry City against the " mighty " Finn Harps;) ..... lol yeah i would love to just look at the San Siro on TV nevermind be there!! :p

S.Siro is great...in my opinion the best european stadium...wow!

probably Derry cause they are my local team but the thing is i'd be happy regardless of the result....doubt it would happen though.....it would be amazing if any irish team actually made to the champions league/ uefa cup group stages......

in saying that we got to the first round proper of the UEFA cup in the summer.....one game away from the group stages.....

not sure if you heard about that but it was an outstanding acheivement for a team like us......

yeah we held them 0-0 here in Derry.....but we also beat IFK Gothenburg (2 time UEFA Cup winners) both here and in Sweden and then destroyed Gretna of Scotland....it was like a mini battle of britain if you know what i mean.......they are a up and coming new side and were expected to do well......we beat them 5-1 in scotland! in my opinion they were a bit arrogant/ignorant because they just thought they were better....... we beat them 7-3 on aggregate......

great times....the glory days are now but i really expect us to do better this season.....Irish football never gets recognition but i think now derry are bringing it to the european stage.... :)...

 4 the battle of britain... yeah I know what u mean...
well they were arrogant yeah...A lot of teams when they play against a supposed "lower" team are arrogant...but then they lose and they understand that maybe they were wrong...

btw believe me here in italy I'm not the only one who knows the eircom league....there are a lot of fan of the SPL here...and now also the eircom is improving...:)

are you serious? i never would've thought that....we barely get enough coverage of our own league over here nevermind in italy!

the Football association of ireland is a bit of a shambles though....not enough funding.....big teams are going bankrupt e.g Shelbourne....Shamrock rovers......and ourselves a few seasons back but we managed to survive......

i know that nearly every football fan is slightly paranoid about bias against their team....and i certainly am one of them! its cause were from the north....the dublin referees always seem bias....:( even on irish TV the "pundits" as they like to be called never give us a chance of winning the league....

thats why its even better for a team like us to propel irish football forward....more satisfying...lol

very disapointing last season when we finished 2nd on goal diffrence to shelbourne.....there were definately a few matches where decisions went against us....they were costly as if just one of those decisions went agianst us.....we'd have won the league and be in the champions league......

there...had to get all that out of my system :hat:

yeah i captain my side but were not really that good....im not sure if playing football would be my career path choice.....partly cos im not really good enough....doubt id play for derry as the standard is getting higher and higher......maybe a low division northern irish team but i doubt it......

my current team has an amateur club playing in N Irish 2nd division....theyre called Oxford United Stars so maybe but as i said its unlikely.....

wbu? should i be looking out for a laury in an upcoming womens world cup? :p

its a nothin league....alot like the Eircom league at times...but it does have sum good moments as well....

glad 2 see that the relationship between the 2 sets of dans is improving....

linfield, glentoran and portadown would be great additions to the eircom league if it ever came round....

One league is not a bad idea..... yet I would object to Ulster teams joining the Republic of Ireland league.... The two leagues should merge to form one new league.

My favourite Irish Republic/Northern Irish players are Alan Maybury and Andy Kirk respectively.

Purely becuase they played for Hearts..;) :D

Actually, Maybury was one of my favourites when he was at Tynie. Battled hard and gave 110% everytime.

A lot of fans loved Kirk but I wasn't one of them. A not bad striker but nothing out of this world.

favourite irish player at the moment is readings Kevin Doyle....sum story behind him....2 seasons ago he played half a season for Cork City then signed for reading for like 50,000 and now is like 3rd top scorer in the premiership....

as for nothern irish fav player...i'd have to go for the 1-cap wonder Derry Citys Patrick McCourt.....
