Moratti confirms Vieira swoop
Tuesday 1 August, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus midfielder Patrick Vieira is on his way to Inter, Nerazzurri owner Massimo Moratti confirmed on Tuesday.

The Frenchman was this morning linked with a move to Manchester United, but Moratti says a deal will be wrapped up in the next 24 hours.

“Today is Patrick Vieira’s last in Bianconero,” the oil tycoon stated. “I still haven’t met him, but he should sign his contract tomorrow and he is therefore an Interista.”

Vieira is believed to be in Milan after he flew into Europe’s fashion capital last night after his agent wrapped up talks with the club.

Moratti’s comments have also been confirmed by Juventus chief executive Jean-Claude Blanc in an interview with the L’Equipe newspaper.

“Inter and Juventus have settled on a fee for Vieira and everything is sorted out,” said the new Juve official.

"Patrick Vieira's departure for Inter will be the last operation done by Juventus this summer,” he concluded.

The Nerazzurri are expected to pay something close to £6.5m for the former Arsenal captain, who was signed by Juventus a year ago from the Premiership for just over £14m.

Vieira is now expected to put pen to paper on a four-year contract worth £3.5m a season once he passes his medical.

Inter were in need of a central midfielder after losing Juan Sebastian Veron who returned to his homeland earlier this summer.

Vieira’s arrival will now cast more doubt on the future of David Pizarro who already bemoaned a lack of first team opportunities at Inter last term.

Ah, you beat me to it! Finally some good news on the transfer market! Not that the signings of Grosso, Maxwell or Maicon weren't good. But we needed that midfielder.

It's not official. Moratti said they will be finalizing the deal today.

He's a fantastic player, exactly the kind of player inter needs. He'll rule the midfield if he is half of what he was for Arsenal.

6,5 mill was the educated guess. His contract will be expensive though.
It's good to have Vieira. Even when he plays badly, he's usually solid defensively. Then again, it's not difficult to see how Mancini will play next season. With Cambiasso and Vieira in the middle, he will use wingers to bring up the ball. Same old 4-4-2 with lots of crosses :(

VIEIRA COMPLETES INTER SWITCH

MILAN - Patrick Vieira has signed for F.C. Internazionale after passing a medical. The French midfielder has signed a four-year contract until 30 June 2010.

It is official now people. Good signing. I am hoping that we can use the 4-3-3 suggested by Ryan with Pizarro as the playmaker in this side. A 4-4-2 with wingers and loads of crosses is an ancient and unflexible formation.

i think a 4-2-2-2 would be best
if u can get a good partner for adriano
if not a
4-2-3-1

The Scudetto winning side is nearly complete now:

--------------------Toldo----------------
J.Zanetti----Cordoba----Samuel----Grosso

-------------------Pizarro----------------
--------------Vieira------Cambiasso------
--------????-------------------Figo------
--------------------Adriano--------------

I hope that the question marks become Ibrahimovic. If we get Toni then we are going to be such a predictable side.

VIEIRA: "VERY HAPPY TO BE AT INTER"
Wednesday, 02 August 2006 18:25:56
APPIANO GENTILE - Part one of Patrick Vieira's presentation news conference:

Would you have chosen Inter if Juventus had remained in Serie A?
"I don't know. It is hard to say now. What I want to say is that I am very happy to be here. We are a great team and we can win a lot with the players we have."

Why Inter and not Real Madrid?
"In my first contact with Marco Branca I heard that the club really wanted me to sign and this was decisive for me. So I decided to sign for Inter."

What will it be like to see Grosso and Materazzi, who beat you in the World Cup final in Berlin?
"There's no problem. It happened a few weeks ago. When I see them I will congratulate them on winning the World Cup."

You said you chose Inter because you wanted to join them more than any other club. Are you expecting to be a protagonist in the Nerazzurri midfield next season?
"There are a lot of great players in this team. If I want to play I will have to prove I am one of the best. I am convinced that I can do well. I will have to work hard on the pitch to show the coach that I deserve to play."

What is it like to see the Scudetto on the Inter shirt?
"What should I say? I have nothing to say."

APPIANO GENTILE - Patrick Vieira has just been presented to the media in the press room at Angelo Moratti Sports Centre. Sat between technical director Marco Branca and transfer market consultant Gabriele Oriali, the French midfielder of Senegalese origins posed for photos with his new shirt (with the 14th Scudetto stitched on the chest) before answering questions on his decision to sign a four-year deal with the Nerazzurri.

"I am very happy, I am very pleased. Inter really wanted to sign me and I understood this through my many conversations with Marco (Branca), and this was a decisive factor for me," Vieira said. "I am convinced that Inter can do very well, and that I can do very well with all my team-mates, by putting myself at the service of the coach and team.

"I wanted to continue to play at the highest level, I wanted to continue to play to win a lot and this was the reason why I chose Inter, who have great players and great potential. Now we have to work hard to achieve what we and all the fans want."

APPIANO GENTILE - Part two of Patrick Vieira's presentation news conference:

Is there a bit less pressure on Inter now they have won the Scudetto, even if it was awarded after the end of the season?
"I am only thinking about winning on the pitch. Every season there is pressure at every big club, not just Inter. We can win a lot with the team we have, but we have to win on the pitch."

Are Inter favourites in a championship without Juventus and with a penalised Milan?
"I don't know. But it is definitely better to win a championship with all the big teams in Serie A.

What do you think of the football scandal and do you think the sentences are fair?
"I am sorry for the fans and for everyone who loves football. As regards the sentences I only know what I have read in the papers. The Italian players gave a great reply at the World Cup, showing that they are great players."

What do you think of your experience at Juventus after what has happened in the past weeks? If you could go back in time would you choose Juventus again? "It was a very positive experience. Everyone at Juventus was very nice to me and they made me feel welcome."

Did you ever think about playing with Juventus in Serie B?
"No, because I wanted to play in Serie A. I wanted to continue to play at the highest level and win a lot more."

Would you recommend Ibrahimovic to Inter's transfer market men Marco Branca and Gabriele Oriali?
"Branca and Oriali don't need many recommendations. They know Ibrahimovic and all the other players very well."

The Juventus management is looking to keep many of your former team-mates. Did they try to do the same with you? Have you spoken with any of your former team-mates, and do you think any more players will leave Juventus?
"No, I haven't spoken with any of my former team-mates. When it was written that Juventus would play in Serie B next season I spoke with the management and sorted everything out."

At Inter only Figo has won as much as you. Inter and Massimo Moratti are expecting a lot from you, particularly in terms of winning mentality.
"This is normal because Inter are a great team with many champions and we can win a lot because we are very strong. We will have to work hard."

When you signed for Inter did you think back to your negative experience at Milan?
"No. It was a difficult experience for me at Milan but it was useful for the future of my career."

Do you prefer to play in a more attacking team or with the classic 4-4-2 formation?
"This is a question for the coach. I am a player and the only thing I have to do is play. It is the coach who decides where."

Was your decision to join Inter influenced by the fact that the club had nothing to do with the match-fixing scandal?
"I didn't think about this much. I made this decision because when I spoke with Marco Branca I understood that the club really wanted me to sign. This was the most important thing for me."

You are the first France international to talk in Italy after the World Cup final. Three weeks on, more is said about Zidane headbutting Materazzi than Italy's victory in Germany. Did you speak about the incident with Zidane after the game?
"No, we haven't spoken about it. I am sorry that this is the only thing people are talking about. We should be talking about Italy's victory, and this is certainly more important than that incident. Us French are still a bit disappointed about the defeat, but we still played a good World Cup and we are pleased with how we did, even if the most important thing in the end is to win."

What does it mean to replace a player like Juan Sebastian Veron?
"Veron is a great player who did well in England and Italy. I am still the same player. Nothing has changed for me."

Have any of your future Inter team-mates called you in this period?
"No, but I played for many years with Youri Djorkaeff, who spent several seasons here at Inter, and he has always spoken well of the club. I have also spoken to Nwankwo Kanu and he said the same things."

What is it like to see a title revoked?
"It is a bit hard to accept because we worked on the pitch to win this Scudetto. But the sports tribunal made a decision and we have to accept it even if it is hard to."

Yup, signing Toni might kill off our hopes for that 4-3-3. Then we'll be strictly 4-4-2 and crossing from the wings. If we were gonna play boring like that, we should've just kept Cuper...

Yea exactly. At least Cuper brought with him a winning ability and a solidity. You can see a weakness and self-destructive nature in the current Inter side and that is a reflection on Mancini's management. At least Vieira brings world class ability to the key area of the pitch. He is a born leader.

And he doesn't get so many :redcard: anymore. In Arsenal he used to get two or three every season.

yes i expected Vieira 2 get a lot of red cards in Italy if he did in England but he started 2 control his temper which is good.
