This should quiet some naysayers.

CANADA 54 (+29)

Only top 95 team that moved more than Canada was Ukraine (+30)

A new method has been used to calculate this eagerly awaited first World Ranking since the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, which not only introduces major changes in points allocation and the assessment of the opposition's strength, but also makes such factors as the importance of the match and regional strength easier to understand. This new formula and the big points hauls gained from World Cup matches has led to a complete shake up in the ranking. Besides the effect of the World Cup matches, the change in the evaluation period has also led to a major shift. Now only the last four years (48 months) count, with each year weighted differently.

Daniel at Vs asks a really good question. How will this affect Canadians trying to get into England? What was it before? You had to be ranked in the top 75 and a player had to play 75% of their countries' internationals. Something like that?

Well done to Canada :)

Thats a fair effort :)

Joe.......based on the current squad, how far do you think Canada can make it up the rankings before they start sliding back down at a significant rate ???

Like for EG: Canada might make it to say rank 39 in the world at one stage, before a few losses over a 3-6 month period drops them back to say 60th in the world.

How far would you realistically think Canada could move up ??

"This should quiet some naysayers."

I wouldn't count on it. With some people, even if Canada won the world cup they would find something to whine about and find fault with the CSA.

As it says, the rankings are an indicator of how a team is doing over a four year period and not that Team A ranked 5th can beat Team C ranked 7th.

Canada probably benefitted from playing most of our games away and getting pretty good results against much higher ranked teams. As an example we beat #13 Switzerland in Switzerland 3-1, of course that doesn't mean we should shoot to the #12 spot but we should be rewarded for that.

In the mid 90s Canada was ranked 40th and I see no reason why we can't get back there (with a much larger and better player pool) and go even higher. There is no reason why we can't be the third team in Concacaf. We do not fear either Mexico (who we beat the last time we played) or the USA (tied). I'm not saying we would win five times out of ten but I am saying we would be competitive enough to make one game a close affair.

We didn't go up those rankings for no reason, there had to be results and production to substantiate it.

Why these rankings are important. In the last few years Canadians have been virtually shut out of England if they did not have an EU passport. Andre Hainault who is now in the Czech Republic could not get a work permit with Crystal Palace even though CP applied and they wanted him. There was a backdoor way to get a working "Holidaymaker Visa" but this loophole has been closed.

Josh Simpson had a "Holidaymaker Visa" that expired and luckily he left Millwall to sign with Kaiserslautern.

To that end, Canadians have been signing in Germany, Scandinavia and now Holland which may in the end be better for development.

Those wacky FIFA rankings have Canada moving up 38 places (second only to Armenia's 48 place gain for June 2007)

Canada is now ranked 56th. Not sure if the latest Gold Cup results are factored in but we beat two teams ranked above us and lost to a team that is not ranked by FIFA so it doesn't count against us (I think). Guadeloupe is ranked 100th by ELO.

We are ranked 6th in Concacaf not too far from 3rd.

16 1 USA
26 2 Mexico
46 3 Costa Rica
52 4 Panama
55 5 Honduras
56 6 Canada

BTW the ELO ratings have us ranked 52nd.

Will be interesting if we can maintain this for awhile how it will affect players getting visas in the UK.
