Congrats to Ecuador on deserved victory, as poland completely underestimated this side, and failed to take the game to them! They failed to test the keeper and had only 3 shoots in 95! That is not enough to get you a victory! I think poland is much better than this, it was not their day and they were a little bit unlucky but it is their mistake for failing to test their keeper who appears to be a big whole. The shot that went in in about the 53rd minute that was (wrongly, from my perspective) called offside was a good one, and they hit the woodwork twice in the last 15 minutes or so, but other than that, they either hesitated too long to take shots, or when they DID shoot their shots were either blocked or missed badly. I thought Polska was the better team in the first 20 - 25 minutes, but after that I wasn't impressed with them at all. The way they're going they're going to basically be out of the tournament after two matches.

The first 5 minutes of that game i already thought this is Korea/Japan 2002 all over again.... defenders leaking the ball, poor ball control, passes either unaccurate or too hard - it was a really terrible performance and not at all what i expected from my homeland. Communication on the field was not smooth and that cost them dearly - A win against ecuador was really Polands chance to make the next leg and they must be on their toes if they want to play well against Germany and Costa Rica (their match on the other hand was really really good)

I agree with you. The Ecuadorians should be able to use oxygen more efficiently if their bodies are used to an oxygen poor environment. They should have more RBCs than the "sea-level" teams and thus have better fitness to an extent.

However, I think that the critics say that visiting teams to Ecuador are so badly affected by the altitude that they play worse than they are normally. If Ecuador played the same team at sea level, then the opposing team would not have that disadvantage and would theoretically win easily.

The critics are basically just saying Ecuador won because the opponent is practically suffocated and that if the teams played at sea level then the talented opponents would wipe the floor with the Ecuadorians since the opponents are obviously more talented than Ecuador.

As for my opinion on this, I think Ecuador should have some physical advantage at both sea level and at altitude if their bodies handle oxygen better. Especially after seeing today's game, it is clear to see that Ecuador are a competent team that can win regardless of if the opponent is disadvantaged by altitude.

I'm with you on this one, and I agree with my pal Dfan on Poland. They were the more organized and technical team for 20 minutes, but they tried to make plays look too pretty, while Ecuador was down to business and defended in numbers, countered with speed, and pressed hard. Poland thought they'd tic-tac-toe it into the net, and maybe they'll learn from this and come out with a bit more determination. Ecuador was the better team by far!

I must admit that Ecuador was a better team than my NT in yesterdays match. Especially in the 1st half they dominated on the pitch and Poland played nothing, the only player in Polish team who played well in the first 45 minutes was Boruc. In the second half we played more agressive and offensive, we even scored a goal (for me there was no offside), but still our 'stars' (I mean Żurawski and Szymkowiak) were playing like they didnt care if it was a WC game or only a training. Krzynówek and Smolarek were the only players that were fighting and trying to do something. Janas (our coach) waited too long with substitutions and kept our team playing with the unproductive 'stars' instead of young guys (Jelen, Brożek) who played really well when they fianally get the chance to show their skills. Therefore I think Janas shouldnt wait and in the game against the hosts we should play 4-4-2 without Żurawski, Szymkowiak, Radomski, Żewłakow and Bąk, and start with Brożek and Smolarek in attack, Krzynówek, Mila, Sobolewski, Jeleń in the middle and with Dudka, Bosacki, Jop, Baszczyński in the defence. And of course Boruc in goal.

anyway, yea, things dont look good for poland.

there is absolutely NO way that they will beat Germany. not that germany looks invincible, but they are the host nation, and i just think that theyll win or at the very worst, tie.

Ecuador should be able to beat costa rica, but a tie will do. with costa rica having a -2 and Ecuador with a +2 , things are looking good for us. but well have to wait for the 2nd game, that defines everything IMO.
