The hosts' team SUCKS, but fortunately for the hosts, the other teams in Group A aren't any good, either, so...Deutschland to win the group without too much trouble, and trounce "Los Ticos" 3 - 0 while doing so.

Even though the Germans aren't that good this year they shouldn't have a problem beating CR, I wouldn't be expecting a rain of goals either, who knows...

I expect Germany to barely pull of a win. Home court advantage will probably help them do this. Germany does not have a very good team this year. I expect Germany to exit early this year. Only way i see Germany winning the whole thing is if Blatter riggs it for them. Same way he will rig it the WC this year so the Swiss come in 3rd or 4th

Germany will need the home advantage for having any chances on getting to the semis. But for defeating this Costa Rica even their team is enough.

The hosts' team SUCKS but it doesn't suck quite THAT badly. On the other hand, if the hosts' team WERE to lose to Costa Rica...well, I'll say the same thing then as I would to fans of any team that had trouble beating "TnT" - that ANYBODY who is still talking about that team winning the World Cup had better just keep quiet 'cause if any team can't beat "TnT" or Costa Rica, or even beat them handily, then they won't stand a chance against any REAL teams out there!

The big advantage is home field, but also the talent on Germanys side will give the an even bigger push.
Without the service of their capt. the German may have some problem. They already have trouble in the warm up games with the Japanese.

Ballack being out of game 1 will not have a big influence on the game.
It is the opener and the crowd will be a huge factor. Germany have other great players on their team that will cover for Ballack.
It is better he sits this one out to be 100% for the game against Poland.

It was a very nice game. If only Germany would score, it wouldn't be exciting :) And this way there were 6 goals. But that's not the end, let's wait for the Poland-Ecuador match now ;)

I'm loving this USB receiver... :D Germany's 2nd goal:
What an amazing goal by Frings! Too bad I hated how Germany played defense (good thing they had possession of the ball for the most part of the game), specifically the backline. Those 2 goals shouldn't have happened. Hell, one of them Wanchope was offsides. But whatever, Germany won and that's all that matters.

Great opener! some outstanding goals by the Germans! Germany much better than cr in terms of quality, costa rica is dead, and germans need to fix that defense otherwise they will be going out in the second round! I predicted 4-0 for germany it ended in 4-2 victory, so not too far off, considering that one of the goals was off side! Anyway good game!

Beautiful two goals by Germany, both of them contenders for the goal of the tournament. Germany gave a solid performance, although I think that playing an offside game against a team that's got a striker like Walchope is nothing but stupid. Anyway, Germany clearly stated that they mean business to the strong contenders of the cup. They can obviously score goals when they need to. Overall, great game.

Germany looked good on the attack, but their defense will not hold up if they play the same way against stiffer opposition. They tried the offside trap and got burned twice. Lehman myabe could've played a little better too, but a good win overall. Exciting opener.

LOL, yes, but there was a reason for that: The Costa Rica right wing was terrible.
i think wanchope was offside on both goals.
Oh, in my opinion he was definately ON-side in the first goal. Wish I could find a replay to show you, but it looked pretty clear to me... Great call. Also the Germans didn't complain much, which is usually a clear sign that it was a correct decition...
On the second goal I think it was too close to call, even in a freeze-frame replay. Perhaps he was 5 cm offside, I don't know. But in such close cases I think the linesman should NOT wave for offside. IMO he should only wave when he is sure that the player was in fact offside. I'm happy to see that the linesmen are indeed much less prone to wave for offside now, and that they as a result of this do get it right a LOT more often now than they did ten years ago, when they waved for everything (even when the player was more than one meter from being offside).

Not the first, but yes to the second. Two players were offside. I thought by about a yard. It really disappoints me that a linesman can't see this if he's positioned correctly.
I know they are supposed to give the benefit of the doubt to the attacking team...what I'd like to know is where does the doubt come from when there are TWO players goalside of the defender.
Okay, when there is one attacker moving forward and a defender moving out and they are crossing and you try to work out was there one arm in line with a leg and does that constitute level and therefore onside;) ....THEN I can see it's difficult. But that wasn't the case here.

Germany's 1st and last goal were great. Costa Rica's second goal was clearly offside so really it should have been 4-1. Germany had some good moments but imo did not play great. I found this game quite boring compared to the Poland one. Germany has to work on their defense more and they should stop playing the offside trap.

From the ref's angle, I imagine he could see the other player was not the intended recipient of the pass. The linesman possibly didn't have that advantage...you know, you look across the pitch and you see the ball travelling forwards. You cannot necessarily tell which player the ball is travelling to. The second player was about ten yards wide of Wanchope (to his left) and there was a defender between the two players. That defender's attention would have at the very least been split between the two and he may even have been moving wide to cover him, leaving Wanchope more free than he would otherwise have been.
I am one of those who believes that a forward influencing play from an offside position is involved in the play. I'm quite happy to see a player coming back from 'offside'; a player not marked; a player not in a defender's or goalkeeper's line of sight; not distracting anyone etc NOT given offside. But I don't think that was the case here.
I find myself wondering if the linesman saw the wide player and maybe didn't see Wanchope too far forward because the wide player obstructed his vision. If he then didn't flag, realising the ball wasn't going wide that could explain it. But I didn't notice if the linesman was on that side of the pitch.
The replay I decided showed it as offside was a few minutes after the game restarted. The commentator mentioned it then and not at all on the replays shown immediately following the goal. I assume it was replayed then and mention was made then because someone in the background team noticed the offside and advised the commentator so he could comment on it, having missed it previously.

I don't know, to me the first one looked off-side but then again i didn't same many replays of the first goal, as for the second goal he was clearly on-side good call by the linesman

Not the first, but yes to the second. Two players were offside. I thought by about a yard. It really disappoints me that a linesman can't see this if he's positioned correctly.
Isn't the "passive" offside rule in effect thought? Wonchope wasn't offside and he scored, so the other two wouldn't matter in that case. Correct me if I am wrong, but did this recently new rule change?
Wonchope was definitely onside in the first goal however.
Lahm and Frings goals were very nice. Lahm basically ran by two Costa Rican donkeys before putting it on a wire, and Frings launched a rocket. That said, the German defense is shocking, you could even see it on Klinnsmans face. Guys, Canada has even beaten Costa Rica so before I get too concerned with Germany's chances, I'll need to watch the next two matches because I believe that both Poland and Ecuador are much better competition.

well i was looking at both goales a couple of times. The first one was definetly onside. The german tv showed the offside line and it was clearly legal. the second goal: both players from cr were offside, although the guy who scored it was only a very little bit offside. but who cares? It was hard to judge for the reff and i guess it doesn´t matter, since germany should move on and cr can fly home anyways:) by the way I got my tickets today!

Very elegant. :boo:
While Costa Rica may not yet be one of the top tier teams, we have a very respectable futbol program. We showed that we were not afraid to play for the win with our 3-4-3 formation. Unfortunataly that strategy did not pay off for us this time.
Oh, and p.s. Costa Rica may have lost to Canada, but we have a positive record against European teams...
