The winner of this game will make it out of the group (along with Portugal), the loser will not. If it's a draw, I see Mexico advancing on GD.
My prediction: Mexico 1-1 Iran

We're talking about friendlies, not real competition matches. Iran's result over Croatia was impressive, certainly, but don't let it get over your heads. Portugal played Croatia last November as well, and comfortably won by 2-0. Croatia's a solid team, but still far from France's level, or Holland B (which, I remind you, Portugal also beat during EURO 2004).
Regardless, I predict Mexico's greater routine, average player-height and ball possession, plus their tough 5-man defense (when was the last time Mexico lost by more than 1 goal difference) will completely stiffle Iran's stronger attacking flair. It'll probably be a boring game, resolved 1-0 via corner kick mistake.
If, however, Iran manages to win or even tie the game, and it comes down to goal difference between the two, I believe Iran will be highly motivated to obliterate Angola (most likely coming from twin defeats against Portugal and Mexico already), whereas Mexico's chances of beating Portugal by a large margin, or even tying the game, aren't very promising. In that case, Iran'll take the second spot of group D - after that, all bets are off.
So, to all mexicans and iranians out there, put your hearts on this match! It'll likely be the most important match of the group.
P.S. Hello. I'm new to the forum, but I've been reading it's posts for a few months now. It's the first time I actually bothered to write my two cents, so bear with me.

Hat Trick is right, Frendlies cant be used to judge a team. The fact that mexico lost means they will come out stronger. The winner of this game will move on.

2-0 or 2-1 Mexico.
Goals coming in the second half.
Like I said in the other thread. The pressure is on Iran and I think we may see a few cards, even a player get sent off during this match.
I agree that its going to be an ugly game and with ugly games come wacky mistakes. I think its a bit naive to think Iran will dominate. It'll be hectic, thats for sure.
We dont have to wait much longer. We'll find out soon enough.

Great analysis!!!! I wish i would've read this before.
But Yah, this is definately the game of the group as Portugal should coast into the second round.

There is almost no question that this will be the most crucial game in the group as both teams fight for going into the second round.
Both teams have their advantages and disadvantages.
Iran's advantages: having several Bundesliga-based players. Also having a fairly strong offense and good midfield.
Iran's disadvantages: inadequate number of friendly competitions before the world cup, although the friendlies did give a boost of morale to the team.weak defense
Mexico's advantages:An experienced and strong team, overpowering iran in defense
Mexico's disadvatages: Not as many european-based players.

im not trying to talk back or retaliate, sometimes comments are taken as me trying to prove someone wrong or something,so plz its just a comment......anyway.mexico has a few european based players too.
1.rafael marquez
2.jared borgetti
3.guillermo franco
4.gerardo torrado(spent alot of his time in europe he came back to mexico a year ago.)

It counts more for Iran though, since they actually get playing time with their clubs and have many more than mexico. Borgetti plays like once every 2 months for bolton, guille is argentinan and usually on the bench so the only one really that gets playin time is marquez. Either way 2 players is not much.

Playing in Europe's harshest leagues has disadvantages as well. Mexico's league ended around one month earlier than most Euro leagues, so most Mexican players are fresh and rested, and had an extra month of routine training for their NT. On the other hand, Marquez, for example (along with Ronaldinho, Deco, Henry and co.) finished their last game, the Barça-Arsenal CL final, only a short while ago, and are probably still exhausted, which will hurt their performances in the first three games (after that, everyone's dead tired anyway, so it doesn't really make that much of a difference). That's the reason so many NT "stars" out there are still in doubt for the WC (Rooney's a prime example of that), hot-headed clashes and traumas happen much more often during the last league matches than training sessions.
Iran's Bundesliga-based players won't be as fresh as mexican or iranian league players (Iran's league also finished earlier, this year, I believe, but I could be wrong), so Karimi's experience might be offset by simple lack of breath. And seeing as most of Iran's midfield plays in Germany, and most of Mexico's actually plays in Mexico...
I still stand for a slow, cautious game on both sides that'll end with a single mistake, coming from either a corner or free kick. Mexico takes 3 points.

No sane coach would bench Germany's alledged best player, at home, in favor of a foreigner, no matter how gifted he might be. Karimi's not a starter, but it means nothing. Besides, exactly how many midfielders in the world would bench Ballack anyway? I can only think of one, and that's Gerrard. Even then, it'd be a close call.

i think i will be a very very close game, big chance a tie. Iran has many good players, and they tied 2-2 with croatia(which iran was winning, they tied because of the last minute penalty kick), and 5-2 with serbia.. mexico cant never beat croatia, but iran did. so IT WILL BE A TIE, OR IRAN WILL WIN IT.

Good match!! That's the kind of match that I would have a non-soccer-loving American watch if I was trying to get him (or her) to enjoy soccer!! I thought that Iran was stout in defense, but that (like Italy has so many times in the past) it tried to defend TOO much in the second half, without attacking, and it cost them. Good job by México!! On to Angola vs. Portugal! Should be interesting!

i love this result..remember ricoo9 and other bitxhes saying iran wouyld definately win, saying iran was much better this match proves mexico is way better i mean 3-1 is not total domination but its a large lead and this blows iran offf the map to qualifiCATION.if they want top qualify they will have to blow out angola and beat portugal and hope portuugal doesnt do good.
