Yugoslavia striker Mateja Kezman has hit out at fans who booed the Dark Blues during their disappointing draw with Switzerland on Saturday. "Sometimes it is better to play in front of empty stands than people like that," he said.
The game in Belgrade was played in an unpleasant atmosphere after the majority of the 36,000 crowd jeered their own national anthem before kick-off.
New Yugoslav coach Slovenia Djoric was also the target of abuse, with fans calling for his replacement by Red Star's Slavoljub Muslin.
Some of the Yugoslavia team were targeted, too, and PSV star Kezman said: "The chants from some of the fans were horrible. During the match they didn't once support the team. Some fans just cheered for Partizan, the others Red Star."
Kezman's strike partner Savo Milosevic joined in the condemnation of the supporters and felt the national anthem set the tone for the rest of the game.
"The anthem should encourage us, but 30,000 people booed," the Parma player said. "It should be changed so people respect it. Afterwards, the whole stadium was whistling us even though we didn't play too badly."
The point of this is
1) Change the National Anthem
2) When the national team plays ... it doesn't matter if you're a Grobar, or Delija ... you're just Blue.
