Whats the latest info on this new proposed stadium? Has it been approved yet?

After Bakogianni left the mayorship of Athens, it looks like it is a matter of Souflias. He and the temporary mayor of Athens had a meeting with the board of PAO lately and as it looks like the proposal will be finalised soon.

The final decision is taken after the meeting between Souflias and Vardinogiannis. The construction of the stadium will start at the beginning of 2007.

Οπως αναμενόταν, η Βουλή "άναψε" το πράσινο φως για το νέο γήπεδο του Παναθηναϊκού. Την Τετάρτη ψηφίστηκε η τροπολογία του ΥΠΕΧΩΔΕ για τη μεταφορά του γηπέδου του Παναθηναϊκού στην περιοχή του Ελαιώνα και τη ταυτόχρονη ανάπλαση της περιοχής της Λεωφόρου Αλεξάνδρας.
Τόσο η κυβέρνηση της Νέας Δημοκρατίας όσο και η αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση, άνοιξαν τον δρόμο στους "πράσινους" για τη δημιουργία του σπιτιού που θα στεγάσει τα όνειρα και τις φιλοδοξίες των φιλάθλων. Ενάντια στην ψήφιση της τροπολογίας ήταν, όπως αναμένονταν, τα κόμματα της Αριστεράς.

Στον Ελαιώνα καθορίστηκε η ανέγερση γηπέδου ποδοσφαίρου χωρητικότητας 40.000 θέσεων, κλειστού γηπέδου καλαθοσφαίρισης και πετοσφαίρισης, πολυλειτουργικού δημοτικού κτιρίου καθώς και χώρων στάθμευσης και κοινόχρηστου πρασίνου.
Η συνολική επιτρεπόμενη δομήσιμη επιφάνεια για το γήπεδο ποδοσφαίρου και το κλειστό γήπεδο μπάσκετ και βόλλεϋ θα είναι 53.000 τετραγωνικά μέτρα, ενώ οι συμπληρωματικές αθλητικές δραστηριότητες δεν θα ξεπερνούν το 17,5% του συνόλου και οι εμπορικές δραστηριότητες επίσης το 17,5% του συνόλου.

Οσον αφορά το γήπεδο της Λεωφόρου Αλεξάνδρας, καταργούνται οι οικοδομήσιμοι χώροι και χαρακτηρίζονται ως "χώρος πρασίνου", στον οποίο επιτρέπεται η ανέγερση μουσείου και εντευκτηρίου, χώρου αναψυχής και εστίασης καθώς και η δημιουργία υπόγειου χώρου στάθμευσης ΙΧ.

Finally after so many talks, the stadium project aproved today (Monday - October 9).

Giannis Vardinogiannis, as well as Thanasis Giannakopoulos, Takis Baltakos and Vagelis Samaras went at the city hall today and met with the surrogate mayor of Athens, Theodoros Skylakakis.

The stadium will be built in the standards of Dragao in Oporto. What is left is the announce of the date the construction will begin.

I gotta say that Greece has great stadiums. If they keep it up I think they should host the World Cup next time when it comes around in Europe.

The Olympics of 2004 were a reason to build many modern stadiums in Greece.

However, most of the football stadiums have are surrounded with a track field. Panathinaikos' new stadium will be clearly for football use. Just like the stadium of Olympiakos (Georgios Karaiskakis).

The pre-presentation of the new stadium took place today at "Athinaida" gallery in Votanikos with the presense of Giannis Vardinogiannis and Argyris Mitsou. The stadium will have about 40,000 seats and it is going to be ready 1.5 years after the start of the construction.

Personally I don't think they are able to start the construction soon :rolleyes:.

Hehe :D. Currently Votanikos is one of the most underdeveloped areas of Athens but after the stadium will be built property there will be sold for gold that's for sure.
