ROME (AP) - A judge has ordered two Galatasaray players to stand trial on charges stemming from a melee that followed an AS Roma-Galatasaray European Champions League game in 2002, Italian news agencies reported Thursday.
VIOLENT TIMES
Kerem Inan and Emre Asik are accused of assaulting a public official, and Asik also is accused of insulting an officer, according to the ANSA and Apcom agencies.
The melee followed a March 13 game in Rome, when Roma and Galatasaray played to a 1-1 draw. The match finished with players from both sides exchanging insults and shoving each other on the way to the dressing rooms.
Italian riot police forced Turkish players off the field with batons as a crowd of 60,000 jeered and hurled debris.
The fracas prompted then-Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem to compare the behavior of Italian police to that of police during the time of Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.
Five more players also are being investigated, the agencies said
