Of the five challengers to Galatasaray chairman Ozhan Canaydin, Yigit Sardan has emerged as the main opposition in the club's upcoming general election. But although Sardan is a favorite among fans, it remains to be seen whether he has enough support in the GS congress to unseat the current chairman.
A poll of Galatasaray fans on the unofficial site WebAslan.com shows Sardan as the clear favorite of the six candidates, with 62% of the 75,000 votes cast. Canaydin has only 12% of the votes. Some Galatasaray supporters hold Canaydin responsible for the club's worsening financial situation. But despite his unpopularity among many fans, the chairman may have enough support where it counts: the congress of Galatasaray club members who will be voting on March 25. He even has the support of Adnan Polat, the former
Galatasaray board member who launched a private fundraising campaign last month to help clear some of the club's debts. At the time, Polat had made statements highly critical of the current administration, but this week announced he would be supporting Canaydin in the elections.

Galatasaray chairman Ozhan Canaydin was re-elected by a congress of Galatasaray club members today in Istanbul. Main challenger Yigit Sardan came in second, followed by Alp Yalman and Turgay Kiran. The vote count ended at 8.50 pm. The re-election, a vote of confidence in Canaydin on the part of the congress, came as a disappointment to many Galatasaray fans who blame the chairman for the club's worsening financial situation. "May God help Galatasaray," said one fan in an online forum. "The fans will be treated like traitors by this board." Others were less pessimistic: "Results in the past are no guarantees for the future," another fan wrote. "[Canaydin] has sacrified a lot for us. He wants to go down in GS history as a man who has done well." Canaydin also announced that popular ex-chairman Adnan Polat, who last month launched a successful fundraising campaign for the club, will join the incoming board.
