we can't deny that Spainsh football has a big improvement .The spanish club just being greater and great in the past two year, such as R.madrid,Velencia and Barcelona. Some small club such as Deportivo and Alaves also became a part of the strong European clubs. And the Spainsh national team also produce some great goals and has good results in thier World Cup qualifying and friendly match......so...Spain......The Champion!!!!

Severus

that's just it. spain always get the grand results against san marino and malta in WC qualifying and sure they score tons of goals in the process - but when it comes down to the real deal - they choke. same thing happened last season when spain had 3 teams in the semifinals of the CL and what did they do in the euro finals ? they choked. they're underachievers and always have been.

i'm hoping the azzurri win it but it'll be between italia/argentina/france. it's a toss up.

hey.....i know that argentina and france maybe have a great chance in the next world cup...but Italy??....don't dream about it.......
and i think spain maybe is the best chance to be the champion as a underdog...

well apparently bright futbol minds consider trapattoni's team to be a legitimate favourite to hoist la coppa in 2002 - so what do you base your opinion on ... your bias ? everyone is entitled to an opinion, but the problem is yours is misinformed.

hey amigo but don't worry ... maybe one day spain will win the cup ... the day the US meets them in the final.

that's very true
hey raul
u know what
spanish football really produced a lot of good teams
but not all of them are spaniards
deportivo got tons of south americans
barcelona has a lot of dutch players
so are real and valencia
they are all types of foreigners in the team
so what does it have to do with spain?

Who will win the next "Coupe du Monde"?
Probably Argentina, France or Spain.
Brazil has disappointed me.

I think France, Argentina and Italy

Others that should do good if they qualify are...

Germany, England, Portugal, Yugoslavia, Netherlands, Romania and Czech Republic

i am surprised nobody has mentioned france. i'll tell you what though ... my prediction as to who will meet in the finals is italia - argentina but i wouldn't be surprised if one of the 2 end up meeting les bleus in the finals instead.

don't underestimate the french cos they're still a legitimate favourite to repeat.

With outstanding form in their qualifiers and a world class squad, Argentina look the goods for Korea/Japan 2002.
As this tournament is in Asia I think this will favour the South Americans. History suggests the Europeans are not good travellers for World Cups.
Of course France can not be dismissed. But their bubble has to burst eventually. World Cup '98 flattered 'Les Bleu' a little, considering both Paraguay and Italy extended them in knockout phase and Croatia gave them a run for their money as well.
Every World Cup has suprise packets my tips are Australia, Japan and Cameroon.
The Socceroos are long overdue for qualification and they have a decent squad of European based players. Japan also look quite capable of suprises, and co-hosting will do their chances of a final 8 finish no harm. Cameroon have the experience and pedigree to do something big.

So - Winner: Argentina
Runner-up: France
Suprises: Cameroon - Semi Finals
Japan and Australia - 1/4 Finals

Italy and ARG to me now are the top. France too but I dont have good feeling for them.
I think the top runners for the next WC2002 are Italy Argentina and France.

you cant just say that BRAZIL is not good enough!!!:fed-up: they had some problems with the coaches,i think that SCOLARY will find the right formation!!!the guys are briliant, all they have to do is get in to the groove!! cos every coach calls diferent players!!!if you take the same players who played in 98' they'll surelly kick ass!!!well not every one of them but most of!!!and BRAZIL has a lot of problems with CORUPTION too!!!they've barelly made it,cos the FIFA federation was thinking to BAN BRAZIL from the WORLD CUP!!!you've heard that!!!so ARG and ITA are great but so is BRAZIL!!!i believe in them!!!!the BRAZILIAN football is still the best in the world!!!never mind that FRA has more points from BRA they will fall wery soon!!!

I think Brazil ( if they qualify ;) ) will end up top 4 in WC 2002

There not doing well in their qualifiers because hardly any of their good players are playing

I think the favorite from Europe has to be Italy. The only reason it is Italy in my mind and not France is because the French have to lose sometime.

The favorite in my opinion from South America is Argentina. To me they have it all and are my favorite to win the tournament.

The "sleepers" in my mind are Brazil from South America and England from Europe. Sleepers isn't the right word to discribe these two nations, but it seems that everyone expects them to do poor in the next world cup.

I say Brazil because even though they are playing like crap. They still have far too much talent to not make some noise.

And I say England because they are starting to play much, much better. They will probubly qualify through the play-off. But they have the players to do very well. And they are all playing like a team now, Sven has them on the right track.

Mato

If we keep up the form, and keep on playing like now, we're going straight there. But with 1 year to go, it's kinda pointless and you can only but speculate. There's way too much time left, and, though i recognize I LOVE this moment when we're up, and brazil is well.....down the drain (yeah, i love it and hope they stay in there so i can keep on laughing - GO HONDURAS), anybody who has always suffered them like we did will keep an eye open for them.....The sleeping elephant. Others are France, maybe Italy though the level most of the big europeans guns been showing (Germany, Italy, England) is really disapointing.

I saw something about Spain?? C'on, Spain will never stop being what it is, a team with a couple of good players that score 10 times against San Marino and Feroes Islands, but when it's time for the real deal, they always shit their pants. (Spain vs. Paraguay - France 98 AMARGOS)

Spain it's just a smaller version of Holland, only with worst players, and that they get kicked out even earlier, in the groups phase, last 16 tops. They both lack what it takes to get to finals........BALLS

argentina are hype amigo. but i think we can take you out. it'll be a battle, probably go down as the best futbol match ever ... but we'll do it. we still owe you for 1990.

anyway, let's just forget about the WC for a moment and just laugh at brasil. AHAHAHAHA !!!

I would like to see a team like Portugal win it, but realistically, the main contenders are:

1. ARGENTINA- Although many of you think that there is so much unnecessary hype about Argentina I personally think otherwise. If you alnalyse their squad, you can argue that in Batistuta (alongside, Romario, Van Basten and Baggio, one of the greatest strikers of the 90s), Crespo, Lopez, and Saviola (NEXT BIG THING)they have the most lethal strike force of all the team. Also if you look at their midfield line-up with Veron, Kily Gozalez, Javier Zanetti, Redondo and Riquelme (will be the star of the tournament) they will have the deadly ammunition for their strikers (although I personally believe that in Figo, Rui Costa, Conceicao and Simao Portugal have the best midfield).

2. ITALY- In my opinion, the most complete team in the world at the moment with Goalkeepers: Buffon, Toldo and Abiatti (it's not fair for one team to have too many keepers of te highest calibre). Undoubtably, the best defence in the world with Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro and Coco. Now the midfield, Fiore, Del Piero, Totti, Gattuso, Albertini and Pirlo (Not too bad is it). Finally, in the attack we have Vieri, Montella, Inzaghi and Del Vecchio. They will be the hardest team to beat, and if they lose it will be by penalties. Euro 2000 (Finalists, and very unlucky to lose by golden goal), WC 98 (Lost by penalties in Semis), WC 94 (Finalists, penalties again), WC 90 (Semis, and guess what? yep, penalties again).

3. FRANCE- they are still the team to beat, but I think that they lost quite a few instrumental players in Dechamps and Blanc, and Zidane is not getting any younger. I believe they will lose in the semis or the final itself.

4. SPAIN- The world's biggest underachievers. Even though I wouldn't put money on them after they disappointed me so many times now, I still give them an outside chance (I mean they are bound to get better with practice..aren't they!!). With their squad, they have the potential to be world champions (last game against France, they completely dominated the game and won it easily), but they are so inconsistent. With quality players like Casillas, Hierro, Helguera, Luis Enrique, Gerrard, Mendieta, Raul, Morientes, and Javi Moreno, they are more than a match for the above team....but, it depends on how they feel like playing on that particular day

But I guess, ARGENTINA is where my money is going :D

Allow me to begin with the first of what I'm sure will be many arguments for my beloved team of Portugal.

Here's why I think we have a good chance of shocking the world.

-We're lead by Figo.
-This team has been playing together for about 15 years - they won the youth world Championship together.
-Our mid-field line of Figo, Costa, Conceissao is the best in the world.
-We gained valuable experience making it to the semi's in the UEFA cup - when we were cheated in the last game against France.

-I WANT THIS MORE THAN I DO MY OWN HEALTH!!

ItalianBoy
10-09-2001, 07:24 PM
Well that is if you like figo that much and if you totally forget about other teams Like ARG and ITA ENG BRA ETC ETC ETC.
Shocking the world I dont know, but to win some games, sure.:D :D :D :D

I too think that ITA and ARG are the top 2. I think that ITa thought got more chance. I guess cuz thats the team I TIFO for!

Pedro

I know the subject here is not England, but guys, give me a break do not seriously include them as contenders to threaten. They are a terrible team. Look at the skills of their best players. Beckham, Owen, Scholes, Schearer are not fit to shine the boots of the bes players in Portugal, Italy, France, or Argentina (but especially Portugal.

ItalianBoy
10-10-2001, 06:39 PM
Are you saying that Portugal has a better team than ENG?
I personally dont think so.
they got an awesome team.
They will kick ass with ITA and ARG.

Pedro
10-10-2001, 08:56 PM
Now I think you are just trying to provoke me. England has a good team???? What has changed with England since Euro 2000, when they played so terribly? I will grant that Owen is fast, and shows promise, and Beckham tries hard. For the rest? Who is so great that you see on that team? The win against Germany that everyone is going on about, what was that? Germany stinks too right now. Did you see the game against Greece? England went in as favourites, the Greeks' moral was low - and they still almost lost. Only the last minute goal from Beckham saved them. The reports on the match gave Beckham credit for keeping England from losing and stated the rest of the team was BAD.

Portugal beat Germany 3-0 in Euro 2000 with their second string team lead by Conceicao, they could EASILY do the same to this English team today.

On this point, I think I respect Italy, France and Argentina more than you. I would never place them in the same group as England at this moment.

We will have an opportunity to see who is right in a little over a month when Portugal plays England on November 24 in a friendly and again on March 27 when Italy plays them. I predict that in both cases England will be outclassed.

ItalianBoy
10-11-2001, 05:09 AM
Well BRA is doing that good either still they have top quality players. Dont confuse a moemtn of team breakdown with what the team can really do. I mean they got awesome players like Seaman, old but still does the job, Campbell, Southgate Irwin, BECKHAM GERRard, Owen Shearer etc etc.
Maybe you just dont know the players. In EURO 200, with this great players we got now, no one would have thoought that we would have went to the final. BUT we did, cuz we played good, Everyone was on Hollad, they too are playing sucky now, but they got awesome players. Dont think automatically that since a team has good players they have to win. Look at Chievo, maybe one by one they have no world class player, but they are kicking as now, look at Lazio, WC players and last in the CL group.
So I aint provoking anyone. If you personally dont like ENG ok, but you have to think and be honest. Later

I'll be straight here. England has a crap team. Beckham is overrated beyond words (I sincerely fail to grasp how overrated this dude is; there are like ten playmakers in Brazil superior to Beckham, sorry Brits). Owen is good, but sincerely not that good (Let's see Owen in Serie A, THEN I'll take him seriously). I hope nobody expects a serious analisys about Campbell or Shearer. They're nothing but average. I don't see England going all the way at all.

And Italy? A magnificent defense, a good midfield, and frankly, a reasonable attack. Delvecchio, Inzaghi and Montella? I mean, I can take Vieri seriously, but the others are not that impressive. They do have a lot of strenght and power, but little talent. Of course, this is the Azzurra, and the deep-blue shirt can go the distance by itself (sort of like Brazil's and Argentina's). And of course, their defense alone sets them as candidates.

All in all, I'd say the faves are Argentina (greatest favorite), France, Italy and Brazil (if we get there, as we're not there yet).

I hear most people talking about Italy, and I´ll grant they´re a tough team when it´s time for the real deal and have a good amount of quality players, but so far I haven´t seen much to impress me in the qualifying rounds. We´ll have to see about it in 02.

I don't think england is all that jazz either. Beckham is a media creation, a talented player who was blown out of proportion by a nation obvioulsy hungry for idols.

Brazil has done the same thing too. The hype around Ronaldinho Gaúcho (PSG's ronny) when he first played the Seleção was insane. I of course, he's very talented, but let's keep things in perspective.

Argntina is the team to beat next year, in my opinion. They've been playing together for a long time and that's always very important. Altough frankly I don't think argentina's backline is all that impressive either. the goalie is weak and the defense is the weakest of the four favorite teams (BRA, FRA, ARG, ITA). Their attack is the strongest of all the 4, on the other hand.

ItalianBoy
10-12-2001, 04:22 AM
Beckahm a MEDIA creation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys are crazy or what? The guy is the best there is. Free kicks dribbling speed everything! While I think that Figo is media creation, at leats now in Madrid. Plus BRA now has no one except Rivaldo, Carlos emerson, Cafu and thats it. Maybe Adriano but he cant compare to the likes of Totti or Owen, not yet, and plus ENG kicks ass. I dont know what games you guys saw but for the ones I saw, they were good, like beating GER 5-1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They got great players too. And to me the favs are ARG and ITA.
ARG they have no defense, I mean Ayala and Pochettiono aint that good. And Samuel cant do everything. Burdisso is too young. While theyr mid is good with Veron Siemone and Kily etc, they have good for. too Bati etc.
Italy no good?
Where do you guys see soccer?
We got the best goalies ; Buffon, toldo, Peruzzi, Abbiati Pellizoli etc.
Defense is the best ever, Cannavaro Maldini NESTA, Materazzi, Zauri etc etc.
Mid, Gattuso tommasi, Albertini COCO!!!!!!!! etc
And no forwards!!!!!!!!!!
Montella is probably the best out there now! and plus we got Del Piero which I would never have thought that he would come back so great, and Totti chiesa VIERI etc etc. We have the best team to me. The thing is that we, ITA people are very dependent on our HUMOR! But not the Mamma mia stuff,
we can win against the best of the world, like the game they played in 1997,98 Italy VS the rest of the world, we won 6-2!
and we can lose against SKorea like in 1972 I think.

I have to agree France are still a very well organized and disciplinded team and with the midfield general in control they have to be considered Favorites i also have to agree with Argentina and Italy . Argentina are just loaded with talent at every postion and the youth pool there keeps getting deeper and deeper they truly seem to be the most dangerous team . and Italy they have it all great fowards solid midfield and a very disciplined defense with maldini and nesta and well they have about 3 world class keepers all 3 teams are going to be fun to watch and i would be very surpirsed if 2 of those 3 were not to be in the final

Pedro
10-12-2001, 03:59 PM
Yup, I hear you but...

That's why, (as I think I said in a previous post), I'm basing my comments on how they are playing NOW and recently. I am familiar with their players and with the exception of the consistently good Mr. Beckham, and flashes of inspiration from the young Owen, the team has not been performing. I do NOT hate England, in fact I like to see when they are doing well. I think my friend that you are talking about potential and I am talking about how they've actually been playing. Sure, patriotism, enthusiasm and just plain old magic can kick in at any time, and they could get their shit together. But if they play in the World Cup the way they're playing now, and come up against a hot team - they are toast. Surely you will agree with that?
