In 2002 Greece had England(made quarterfinals but lost to BRAZIL or would have gone further) and Germany(2nd place in world cup and fell again to BRAZIL) in their qualifying group who were extremely tough teams to play against.

In 1998 they had denmark(made quarterfinals and again lost to Brazil) and croatia(finished third place in world cup and lost 2-1 to the champs france) and greece only missed the playoffs by 1 point.

Greece have had their share of bad luck with draws in the two previous world cups as you can tell with getting both a thrid place, 2nd place, and two quarterfinal teams in their group.

Melbourne will host the Socceroos' last international match in Australia before the team departs for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, after winning the right to stage a friendly against Greece in May.

The Socceroos will tackle the European champions in front of what Football Federation Australia (FFA) hopes will be a capacity crowd at the MCG on May 25.

In front of a packed media conference at the ground on Thursday morning, FFA chairman Frank Lowy also announced that Melbourne will stage an international match each year in 2007, 2008 and 2009, with the latter two to be World Cup qualifiers.

The 2007 match will see Australia play against what officials have described as 'one of the world's best football nations', before the Socceroos, who are now part of the Asian Confederation, kick off their 2010 World Cup campaign in Melbourne in 2008.

Lowy said it selected the MCG for the Greece match because of its ability to hold a crowd in excess of 100,000.

"We have considered all opportunities but we have a responsibility as FFA to Australia and of course Melbourne as a far as sporting facilities and sport being represented in Melbourne is probably, not probably, the leading city in Australia and also having regard to the Greek team coming out to play Melbourne is a natural on many, many fronts," Lowy said.

"Of course you have to consider all the cities but Melbourne is way in front of the other cities on this subject."

Lowy said Melbourne was in a good position to host future major international football games in the country, but refused to go as far as saying that the Victorian capital would be automatically granted those matches.

"We are an Australian organisation and we have to make sure other cities get a fair go but for this big game and other big games, I think Melbourne is running in front of many other cities," he said.

"Of course there is a certain amount of healthy rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne and so there should be, and before we do anything we'll talk to authorities in Melbourne and we'll talk to authorities in Sydney and hope we make the right decisions. But underlying all this Melbourne is in front."

With Melbourne boasting a large Greek community, there is a distinct possibility that the European champions could receive more support at the MCG than the home team, but Lowy said he did not mind that being the case as long as the match was well attended.

"I can tell you from my point of view, the more people that come the better. I don't care what flag they wear before they came here," he said. "Just let them come and let them barrack and if they barrack for both it will be a lot better that way too."

Tickets will go on sale from the first week of April, with prices starting at $40.

PACKED Melbourne Cricket Ground will give Australia's national football side a rousing send-off to its first World Cup in 32 years.

The Socceroos' fixture against European champion Greece on May 25 is a sellout.

Tickets went on sale at 9am yesterday, and the last was snapped up about two hours later.

More than 50,000 tickets had been sold in advance to football club members and registered players in a promotion dubbed the Football Family.

But yesterday's stampede for seats took even Football Federation Australia by surprise.

"This has exceeded our expectations," FFA chief executive John O'Neill said last night.

"We would've been thrilled with a crowd of 70,000. Now it will be close to 98,000.

"It's an incredibly exciting outcome. To have a sellout at the MCG shows that the football-loving fans in Melbourne and Victoria have responded overwhelmingly to the Socceroos for what will be a wonderful game of football against the champions of Europe.

"We had sold over 50,000 tickets to the Football Family, Melbourne Cricket Club members, contractual obligations and other advance offers by sponsors.

"For the tickets to go in two hours continues the momentum we saw on November 16 last year when we qualified in front of a full house.

"Now Melbourne has stepped up to the mark."

The match is likely to create an even bigger buzz than the Commonwealth Games track and field highlights, with Melbourne's Greek population out in force to support its national side.

But O'Neill is confident Australia's supporters will outnumber the Greek fans.

"We welcome supporters of Greece in the blue and white," he said.

"Of course it will add colour and excitement to the occasion, but I really think that the national fervour, national pride, national passion will be incredibly evident behind the Socceroos for the last home game."

The match against Greece is being treated as the start of Australia's World Cup campaign.

The squad of 23 will gather in Melbourne on May 21, and coach Guus Hiddink is expected to plan his cup assault at training and in the game against Greece before the group flies to Germany.

Australia plays two friendlies in Germany, against the Netherlands and Liechtenstein, before its Group F matches against Japan, Brazil and Croatia in June.

While there are no tickets available for the MCG match, FFA is hoping to put a small number of tickets on sale at a later date, including those not taken up through contractual obligations.

O'Neill meanwhile revealed last night that the search had already started for a coach to take over from Hiddink after the cup.

"We don't know where he's going but we certainly know he's not coaching Australia after the World Cup, and for a couple of months we've been quietly - and I stress quietly - going about the job of searching to fill the position," O'Neill said.

"We will have someone in place not long after we finish the World Cup."

But Hiddink is intent on leaving his mark with a big campaign in Germany.

"He's one of the world's most professional coaches. He's got a job to do in terms of the performance of the Socceroos at the World Cup. That's all that matters to him."

Croatia, one of Australia's cup opponents, will play Poland in its final warm-up before the finals.

The match will be played on June 2 in Wolfsburg.
