I'm just doing a little research here, so one question (or two):
Do you know what the word rhetorical means and have you used it yourself?
Be honest and vote. Thank you. And do not post the definition!

Yes, but I'm not much of a rhetorical person, although I think it does come in handy sometimes when you try and argue with people who can actually understand you... :sleepy:

^I'm with you.
But why is there no option "I don't know but I use it". I think it's very common for people to use words they don't exactly know.
i often use it, so some people have troubles understanding me and my mindset

Could be...but not sure such an option would help my point... or maybe it would.
Anyway, the reason why I'm asking is that I recently used that word without any hesitations to answer a question and the person I was chatting with laughed and accused me of trying to sound smart. It annoyed me, because it's a perfectly normal word to me and it wouldn't even cross my mind that the other person might not have heard it before. So, I'm doing a little survey to find out whether it really is normal to most people.
Sorry, but if there's one thing I can't stand, it's being accused of something I had no intention of doing. So just play along people! ;)

As I understand it, MarieL is accused of being smart and that is bothering her. Haha, ;)
MarieL

No, trying to sound smart means you have some inferiority complex which makes you use big words so that people will think that you're smart, when in fact you've just learned the dictionary by heart. It implies that you are intentionally using words which others might not know. Being smart is however the opposite and a positive trait.

But If I had to vote, I'd go with what majority of people would say 'No, don't use it'
MarieL

Then why don't you? Vote that is. Though you'd be in the minority, all by yourself...

what's wrong with being smart and talking smart ;)
to me: if a person uses too many smart words in normal conversation then he/she is flop otherwise it's absolutely normal for rather smart person :smoking:
