Mexico undeserving of a seed
With just a couple of days left until the World Cup draw, one part of the guessing game is now over. FIFA's announcement of the top eight seeds for the World Cup finals on Tuesday ended vigorous speculation.
That said, a look at the seeding shows that if nothing else, FIFA needs to clean up the formula it used to determine those seedings. Of the eight countries on the list -- Brazil, Argentina, England, Italy, France, Germany, Spain and Mexico -- the choices of Mexico and Spain were shaky to say the least.
With FIFA using its own world rankings, and performance from the past two World Cups as a basis for seeding, Mexico inexplicably was seeded over the Netherlands. If one makes the argument that a team from CONCACAF deserved the seed, then that seed should have gone to the United States.
Proponents for Mexico argue that the Netherlands didn't deserve a seed since it failed to qualify for the '02 World Cup. However, let's not forget that the Netherlands also reached the semifinals of the '98 World Cup and has been consistently ranked higher than Mexico in recent FIFA rankings.
If FIFA is going to penalize the Dutch so heavily for '02, then by the same thought process, shouldn't the U.S. be rewarded for its superior '02 performance when it reached the quarterfinals? Given that the U.S. also finished ahead of Mexico in recent qualifying and won the Gold Cup, it's just as perplexing that the U.S. was not seeded ahead of Mexico.
You can't even make a case for Mexico based on historical performance. Mexico has only reached the quarterfinal stages twice historically (1970 and 1986, and both times on home territory), and has been bounced from the last three World Cups in the second round. This means FIFA places more emphasis on a team reaching the second round of the World Cup and the semifinals of a friendly summer international tournament (the recent Confederations Cup) than they do on World Cup pedigree and qualification results.

That dudes an idiot...we're talking about conistency not just looking at one world cup and what did the U.S. do in 98'?Just lose every single game and finish as the worst team. The idiot also makes a big deal of us "only" making it to the quarterfinals when we hosted it yet ignores that the USA didnt even make it that far in 94' when they were hosts.
They can beat us in American soil but in Mexico or in neutral territory I dont think theyve caught up yet...once in a while (like in 02') they can beat us outside of the States but not consistently.

Yes I know someone even translated it to spanish.
I can't believe the degree of ingorance in that individual, I don't know if he wrote that for ignorance or only to pleace his readers, either way, the rules and the system to pick the seeded team are clear, a respectable newspaper, L'equipe from France said that we deserved to be seeded, Pele, Blatter, pretty much everybody, because they know the rules and the system.
Now, personally I stopped reading Suckernet a long time a go, I only visited the place twice and found out, that they are completly biased and for the most ignorant. But I ended up reading that crap by mistake since someone translated it and posted in the Spanish ESPN site, when I saw who was the writer I only laugh, but at the same time I felt sorry for all the uninformed fellas that go to that site and try to learn about soccer, only to end up more uninformed and with lots of biased concepts about football.

I can tell u guys r more biased towards ur team than this guy is for his. anyways i dont think mexico deserved tht seeding either but i think fifa mostly did it for marketing reasons and the fact that mexico always qualifies cuz netherlands should of been in that spot historically speaking by the results from 94,98 and they r more powerful team than mexico
Under the new seeding system, performances at the 2002 World Cup were given twice as much weight as at 1998, and the only surprise was that FIFA decided against using performances at the 1994 finals.

There is this guy again insulting everybody by calling you an idiot if you think that mexico doesn't deserve something. You need to respect people if you expect someone to respect your opinion about mexico.
Historically, FIFA always chose these 8 teams based on history and power.
Aparently, FIFA forgot about this and opted this new way for chosing the seeded teams.
In my opinion, If there's a team from concacaf that deserves the seeding is the USA. I really don't agree with the way FIFA chosed these 8 teams. According to that, Mexico is a better team than Argentina and Italy because they have more points. It simply doesn't make sense.
Obviously, Netherlands is a way better team than mexico and I think that they were the ones that really deseved to be seeded.

What?Choosing just historic powers in the past to be seeded? No, it might have seemed that way but that is not the process...the process has been looking at the past 2 or 3 (not sure) WCs and at the FIFA Rankings.Which explains why Mexico got more points then Fra and Arg (who failed to get out of the 1st rd in 02') and why Holland wasnt seeded (failed to qualify in 02').
The USA, did well in 02' there's no denying that...but the system values consistency and in 98' they lost ever single game and finished as the worst team.So I find it ridiculous for people to think that if anyone from CONCACAF should be seeded, it should be them.
Blame and hate the system, dont blame and hate Mexico...going by the system Mexico absolutely deserves to be seeded.I call him and other people idiots, when they deserve to--when they overlook obvious circumstances and facts.

So they ppl will learn more about soccer from u?
Probably you would, I read and follow football as a hobbie, I read about it from all over the world, I follow different leagues in America (the continent) and Europe, I even try to keep track of Asian football and Australian; I don't care much about african football, but I'm informed about it's national teams and most outstanding players and for the most I don't follow the ideas from the media like a sheep, I live in a football passionate country and have access to a lot of info and make my own mind, the guys in Mexican media are true experts, respected all over the world and you would never find a pathetic article like the one you saw on ESPN, because they know the system (literally there's a SYSTEM to pick the seeds) and don't write bull out of the thin air, I don't imagine a sports newspaper like the mexican ESTO, the spanish Marca, the argentinian Ole, the brazilian Lanza or the French L'equipe writing nonsense like the article from Suckernet.
You don't get it right?, there's a lot of places were you can learn about this game, places with history and tradition, respectable, were guys that have played, learned and studied the game for several years write. By no means a place like this is a place to learn about football concepts, and most of us only share our personal points of view about a subject, with out much harm, no more than a few dozen fellas are gonna read this, meanwhile, the morons in Suckernet are readed by at least several thousend guys, most of them very young considering the market that likes football in the States, and therefore very immature and easy to impress with concepts that in their minds sound logical, but in reality they are a bunch of pathetic ideas that divide the world in black and white.
I can tell u guys r more biased towards ur team than this guy is for his.
Where do you think you are genius? THIS IS THE MEXICAN FORUM, we have no obligation to be objective about something, we are not professional journalists, I don't think the guys in Suckernet are pros either, but they should, once again, this is a harmless site were fans express their ideas, meanwhile the guy writing in a site that's supposed to provide reliable and unbiased info is hurting thousends of readers with it's stupid concepts.
Still I don't think we are more biased than that guy, since we don't make stupid assumptions, we know why and how Mexico was picked to be seeded. We knew this since september, because we did the math, if you and the guy from suckernet study the system you would find that it wasn't a decission between Mexico and US or Mexico and Holland. Mexico was number 5 among the seeded teams above France, Italy and Argentina, the US missed the seed for 1 point, and the teams above them were Italy and Argentina tied at 44, Holland came 10th very far from the rest. Now if you believe that the US deserved to be seeded above someone, go bother somewhere else, to the Italian or the Argie forums, they took the seed over you not us.
anyways i dont think mexico deserved tht seeding either
What a shocking revelation!!!!
but i think fifa mostly did it for marketing reasons and the fact that mexico always qualifies cuz netherlands should of been in that spot historically speaking by the results from 94,98 and they r more powerful team than mexico
Yea marketing reasons and lots of tequila in exchange. Please, the system is clear, and they have used it for at least the past 4 World Cups, what about when they gave the seed to Romania under the same scheme in 98? To appeal all those Romanians and their incredible eastern europe economy?
Under the new seeding system, performances at the 2002 World Cup were given twice as much weight as at 1998, and the only surprise was that FIFA decided against using performances at the 1994 finals.
Even if you use the past system Mexico still gets to be seeded, they fell from 5th to 6th, but at no time the seed was at risk, that's what we knew since September.
Everybody accepted our seed with exception of some people in the US.
The managers of all the major teams accepted it and congratulated us, hell even Brucey Arena congratulated us, so why the american media can't follow the example?, I don't care about the fans, they can do and think whatever they want, but the media should behave with at least some professionalism.
Still it was great what Jack Warner said regarding Landon Donovan's whining over the seed, he said what we already know:
"Landon Donovan is very young, and very stupid, very stupid, stupid, what does he know?, he doesn't know history, he doesn't have history, he's very stupid, forget what he said, OK?, OK?"

Anyway our team is strong enough to overcome that, the only problem is if they relax themselves too much. But if they can shut down Ronaldinho and company to beat them I don't see how either Iran or Angola can harm us.
Portugal is very latin in it's football, and we have a chance to beat them or at least give a spectacular match, our real problems would come in the next round.

I didnt catch that particular show, but if it is true...I am sure that they criticized the system and not Mexico, unlike that idiot from ESPN.Again, there is no reason to blame Mexico...going by the system they more then deserved to be seeded. That idiot goes on a rant against Mexico, as if its them that decided and chose the system.
He ignores that the system values consistency, instead choosing to just look at 02' (when his US team did well) and ignoring 98' (when they were pathetic)...he makes a big deal of us making it 'only' to the quarterfinals when we were hosts and ignores that his team didnt even get that far in 94' when they were hosts. He's pathetic, u could expect that from a normal US fan but not from a "proffesional".

No, I don't have that channel, I don't live in the states and althoug I believe some cable or satelite systems offer it around here, mine doesn't.
Anyway, as you said it, is the system what is kind of screwed, do you think that we believe in those FIFA rankings that place us in 5th or 6th place of the world, every month over countries like England or Italy? Of course we don't.
But since Mexico is one of the most active national teams in the world and participate in lots of tournamets between the organized by FIFA, CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, they would continue to rank high as long as FIFA keeps it's current system.

Why Mexico is seeded? They suck ass, they have never won anything important.
The only reasonthey always go to the WorlD Cup is because the face the kinds of Haiti, Cuba, Dominican Republican, should I continue???
Because of this they are always ranked high!!! Thus get a chance to play with the kinds of Argentina, Brazil, Italy in tourneys like the Gold Cup, etc where the super powers show up with their Team C. Of course evey now and then they beat one of those teams filled with subs. Then they make so much out of when their clubs make it far in the Copa Libertadores. Of course!!! All the best players from South America don't play in the Copa Libertadores!! They play in Europe, you f****g retards!!!
This is a fact however not too many people (esp. Mexicans) don't know: You were offered to play the World Cup Qualifiers with all of South America...guess what your response was: No thanks. Of course.
Talk about FIFA being retarded, who the f*** wants to see the same number of countries from the CONCACAF as of CONMEBOL (South America)??!!!!
Why does Australia have to face Uruguay and TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO faces BAHARHIN (f***, can't even spell it!!!)??? WTF!!!!!!!
Why is USA ranked and seeded lower than MEXICO??!!!!! USA has beat their ass several times now, including the lasr World Cup!!!!
Mexico sucks, wait and see in Germany. My prediction: They will beat Iran -my high school team can beat Iran- , will lose against Angola and Portugal. And hopefully this Mexico crap will be addressed by FIFA and next time just like in Europe there should be a Qualifiers for the whole Americas. It is not fair for South American countries to kill each other for 4 places in the WC (when you know Brazil and Argentina will always go) and Mexico has to face Haiti, Cuba, etc

I was just watching the Fox soccer news. They were talking about la copa suramericana and the 2nd final in la bombonera argentina. Some pumas young defender was being interviewed and he was saying he never thought he would be playing against boca and marking palermo. He said he feels confident they are going to win in la bombonera and that he is "currently equal or better than palermo." (at the same time showing this attitude like if it was nothing).
:faint2: I was just like Incredible!!!. I don't know what his name is, but that was really arrogant and overconfident. These people have no respect for their opponents. He couldve said he feels confident and that their going to win or whatever, but saying he is individually better than this other guy is just inappropriate. I am sorry if you mexicans think that is alright, but i don't see any other teams talking that much garbage all the time, but just you. Same thing with the National team.
Besides, It is not like their playing against morelia, los chivos, or some other sorry team from their country. It is an international competition that deserves more respect.
That is what I hate about people, in general, Not just Mexicans but for some reason it is always the same. Maybe that is a custom in Mexico, but I don't see other teams talking that much garbage, especially when it is a international competition. In south America everybody respects each other, especially internationally.

I see this in most other sports as well, but not to that extreme - they call it trash talking.
I guess we have different perspectives. For the most part, I've seen Mexican players speak with respect for their opponents, especially international ones. We may each be reading into comments differently.
