'Cigani' is a pejorative used by Croats for all Serbs. They called the Karadjordjevics "ciganska dinastija" and in the anouncement ustase distributed before King Aleksanbdar's assasination, they wrote something like this: "Ubit cemo te Cigo, ma gde bio, stici ce te osvetnicka ruka". First recorder anti-Serbian riots at the football game occured before WW2 in Split, in the game Hajduk vs. BSK. The whole stadium chanted: Cigani, Cigani! while Hajduk's players, led by the bully, Luka Kaliterna, chased BSK players all over the field thereatening them that they won't get out from Split alive. This incident is reported in "Politika" and reports could be found in the "Politika's" archives in Belgrade.
After the WW2, the epitet Cigani came back to sport events in Croatia whenever clubs from Belgrade was visiting. No matter whether it was Zvezda, OFK, Partizan, or Radnicki Nis - the stadium would chant loud and clear: Cigani, Cigani!" One could hear it on radio or TV any time there was direct transmission from Croatia. However, Zvezda was particularly insulted because their status as a most prominent Serbian club and most popular among Serbs in Croatia. So when Zvezda played in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osjek, those chants were the loudest. The irony is that several years after, you could hear those chants in Belgrade too. These times those were not Croats, but some Partizan fans. They considered it as a supreme insult towards Zvezda's fans not even being aware that at the same time they were insulting their own nation. Finally, even Zvezda's fans accepted this pejorative with pride. It turned out that today popular nicknames of Zvezda's fans has originated from the Ustasa organization.
This is probably 10th time that someone else or I explained the origin of the pejorative meaning of the word "Cigani". Nevertheless, as it is often the case among Serbs, there is serious lack of selfrespect and selfawareness. Koristiti uvredu koju je svojevremeno zlotvor izmislio da bi ponizio sve sto je vezano za Srbe i Srbiju je krajnje neprimerno, sramno i groteskno.
I found this rather interesting..... what do you all think?
