PREVIEW-Soccer-Bayern need top players back in form to face Juve

By Kevin Fylan

FRANKFURT, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich need Michael Ballack and Roy Makaay to snap out of their slow comeback syndrome in time for Tuesday's Champions League clash with Group A leaders Juventus.

The Italian champions have been irresistible this season, winning their opening two Champions League fixtures and all seven of their Serie A games, including a 1-0 victory over Messina at the weekend.

Bayern, beaten twice by Juventus in the group stage last season, also have six points from two games in Europe but their domestic form has been patchy since injury and illness knocked Makaay and Ballack out of their rhythm.

Makaay, the Dutch international striker, scored six goals in Bayern's first three league matches but has now gone seven games without a goal since picking up a knee injury in September.

Ballack started the season in swashbuckling form but he has played just two matches in five weeks after suffering an ankle injury and then coming down with flu.

Both players were out of form in Saturday's 1-1 draw away to Schalke 04 -- a result that cost Bayern the league leadership in Germany -- and coach Felix Magath needs a big improvement for the match at the club's new World Cup stadium.

"We can't expect Michael back at his old rhythm immediately," Magath said. "But I'm glad he's got the first game behind him and I hope he'll be our leader against Juventus."

Makaay's miserable run continued against Schalke when he missed a simple chance to make it 2-0 but Magath will stick by the club's leading striker.

"He's just going through a phase that all strikers have," Magath said.

Bayern should have French full backs Bixente Lizarazu and Willy Sagnol back after they missed the Schalke game. Wingers Ze Roberto and Sebastian Deisler are doubtful after missing training on Sunday.

The only concern for Juventus coach Fabio Capello is the fitness of Patrick Vieira, who suffered a groin injury during France's 4-0 Wednesday win over Cyprus and missed the Messina game.

Giuliano Giannichedda is ready take his place in central midfield alongside Brazilian international Emerson.

Alessandro Del Piero's recent form could persuade Capello to start the diminutive striker up front instead of David Trezeguet, who is coming back from injury.

Del Piero sealed the win over Messina with a superb solo run, starting just inside the opposition's half and ending with a shot that curled round the keeper.

"It was an extraordinary goal," Capello said. "He's in great shape, like all our strikers. I've got an embarrassment of riches."

Probable teams:

Bayern Munich: 1-Oliver Kahn; 2-Willy Sagnol, 3-Lucio, 25-Valerien Ismael, 69-Bixente Lizarazu; 26-Sebastian Deisler, 6-Martin Demichelis, 13-Michael Ballack, 31-Bastian Schweinsteiger; 10-Roy Makaay, 24-Roque Santa Cruz

Juventus: 32-Christian Abbiati; 7-Gianluca Pessotto, 21-Lilian Thuram, 28-Fabio Cannavaro, 19-Gianluca Zambrotta; 16-Mauro Camoranesi, 8-Emerson, 4-Patrick Vieira (or 23-Giuliano Giannichedda), 11-Pavel Nedved; 17-David Trezeguet (or 10-Alessandro Del Piero), 9-Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Juventus boss Fabio Capello admits it will be tough for his side to repeat last term’s 1-0 win at Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

The Bianconeri collected two single goal victories in last season’s Champions League, but the tactician insists the Germans have improved significantly since then.

"Bayern are much more alert in defence than they were," said Capello. "They are a hostile team to face. It will be difficult for us to win compared to last season.

"This is an important game for both clubs as we each have a 100 per cent record so far. These two matches could be fundamental for our future."

Juventus, who have won both their European Cup games this term, have travelled without the injured trio of Gigi Buffon, Patrick Vieira and Jonathan Zebina.

However, they have triumphed in all nine of their games so far this season and Capello is remaining cautiously optimistic.

"We are in fine form both physically and psychologically," he continued. "We are playing very well, but this game can’t be compared to any of those played so far."

Bayern boss Felix Magath is keen to make up for last season’s results even if he concedes his side are underdogs.

"Juventus are in great shape," Magath said. "Last season they beat us twice because they defended brilliantly.

"But right now, they are even stronger up front. So they are the favourites on Tuesday, and perhaps even for the title.

"This match is a duel between two sides belonging to Europe's elite. They have some of the best players in the world. Individually, they are better than us."

Bayern captain Michael Ballack, linked with a possible move to Turin next summer, added: "They are a brand that stands for success worldwide.

"We must play to our limit and produce a flawless display. If we do, we might win. But we didn't last season and this is why they beat us twice."

The match will also see Robert Kovac face his former teammates following this summer’s switch from Munich.

"Robert is a player who has done well in the few months that he has been with us," added Capello.

"He is an important element for us and will be as significant in the future as he has been up to now."

Juventus probable: Abbiati; Blasi, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Giannichedda, Emerson, Nedved; Del Piero, Ibrahimovic (Trezeguet)

Bayern Munich will be looking to gain revenge on Juventus on Tuesday after two 1-0 defeats to the Turin giants in last season's competition. Felix Magath's side's chances of a win in Bavaria have been boosted by the loss of Patrick Vieira and Jonathan Zebina to injury for the Italians.

Both sides have 100% records so far in Group A, and a win on Tuesday for either side should seal automatic qualification to the next round.

But despite Juve's injury woes, Magath feels that Fabio Capello's side, who currently have a perfect record in Italy as well with seven wins out of seven, are the favourites.

"They are in great shape," said Magath. "Last season they beat us twice because they defended brilliantly.

"But right now they are even stronger up front. So they are the favourites on Tuesday, perhaps even for the title."

BALLACK KEEN TO TEST WITH THE BEST

Having made his Bundesliga comeback in the 1-1 draw against rivals Schalke at the weekend, Bayern captain Michael Ballack is itching to test his side against Italy's best.

The midfield playmaker, who had been sidelined by a host of minor injuries and a bout of flu, believes the crunch clash will measure how far the German champions have come since last year.

"This meeting will tell us where we stand in European football right now," he said.

"The 90 minutes will prove if we have taken a step forward. It is a touchstone."

MAKAAY OUT OF SORTS

But the usually prolific Roy Makaay's lack of form continues to be a big problem for a side lacking in goals.

The Dutchman has not found the net in 52 days now, and his goalscoring decline seems to have rubbed off on the whole team - Bayern have only scored twice in their previous two Champions League encounters against much weaker opposition.

Makaay was out of sorts in the last European clash against Club Bruges due to a knee injury picked up on international duty for the Netherlands, and admitted the knock had put him out of his stride.

"If you have a few weeks off as a striker, it's always hard to rediscover your rhythm," said the 30-year-old after that match.

"I just have to be patient. I'll get stronger after each match."

Makaay is still yet to notch up a single goal after that tight 1-0 victory, but Magath insists that the Dutchman will be back to his best against the Italian champions.

"He is the man for us on the European stage and he carries our hopes," added the Bayern coach.

And Ballack echoed his trainer's views, even going so far to predict a match-winning performance from his Bayern colleague.

"We know he is always at his best when it really matters. It is important for us to see him causing problems in attack.

"I will set up Roy Makaay and he will score the decisive goal in a 1-0 win."

2-1 for Bayern, Juventus simply didn't look like they wanted to win that much.

Trust me, when Bayern come to Turin it's going to be a very very very different story.

I predict 3-0 for Juve next matchday, I'm not joking.

They couldn't do 3-0 last year and they wont this year either.

This game could have easily ended 3-0 or 4-0 but we were unlucky. See ya in Turin and don't expect an easy game because we are stronger than last year and healthier.

Bayern was more physcial from what i saw. Vierias presence im sure would have been the differnece. But still, even without Vieria, i think Juve are the stronher team, although like some said, Juve didn't seem like they wanted the win. Although Juve didn't play to good, i was not too impressed by Bayern either. And the first goal, was handed to them by the ref. Nice assist REF!

Fabio Capello admits his Juventus side did not impress in Munich, although he believes the Bayern game was more balanced than the scoreline suggests.

“We struggled in the first five minutes, then the game became very balanced and they had trouble getting near our goal,” he said after the 2-1 defeat. “We weren’t our usual selves and were lacking something in our reaction time tonight. We weren’t as fresh and sharp as we have been this season. Bayern were very fortunate that we were clearing the ball and it hit the referee, allowing Sebastian Deisler to regain possession.”

The opening goal was a howler from Christian Abbiati, who allowed Deisler’s hopeful cross-shot to go in off his knee.

“I think that the ball dipped very quickly and Abbiati couldn’t react in time. There are some nights when everything goes your way and when it doesn’t, and this wasn’t our game. It’s a shame for Abbiati, who performed a couple of tough saves. I was most disappointed with our lack of aggression, as that is very rare for Juventus.”

Another defensive error allowed Martin Demichelis to double Bayern’s lead, but a last-gasp Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal could prove decisive in the Group A standings.

“Aside from everything, the overall situation was one we were not accustomed to and we couldn’t get back on track. At least we saw a good reaction towards the end, but Bayern were better in the air and that was the key.”

Patrick Vieira’s absence was sorely felt in midfield, while there was controversy at the decision to leave on form Alessandro Del Piero on the bench to begin with and then play him on the flank.

“There was a great performance from Demichelis that really helped out the Bayern midfield and he was crucial for them,” explained Capello. “Del Piero was meant to start out wide on the right, then cut in to allow Zambrotta to push forward, but we lacked the necessary consistency to make it work.”

Wow. That first goal was absolute crap, i cant believe that went in. The second Abiatti should of positioned himself better. The team played terrible but Abiatti was the worst for sure.

Its funny seeing Real Madrid people bag out Juve, when they cant win a match themselves. Go and get raped by lyon again and keep out of this forum unless you have something positive to say.

Juve played terrible, away from home and with a terrible keeper - and still kept it at 2-1. Thats a class side, and when we are playing properly i fully expect a 3-0 4-1 situation. Bayern got lucky today, it wont happen again.

Its not Abiatti's fault through out. He did 2 good saves, that kept juve in the match. One of a Ballack header ( ballack should have angled it more) , and once from makaay, who missed 2-3 good chances yesterday. Juve were simply outplayed, and were never with a shot at winning in the entire game.

Juventus never ever had the slightest chance to win that game, indeed they were lucky not to lose 3-0 or 4-0.

They didn't play abdly or anything- it was the same team which dominates the Seria A at the moment- but Bayern was just another caliber.

I can't remember more than 1-2 good chances for Juve to score during the whole game, while Makaay solely wasted 3-4 good opportunities to end the game after 60 minutes.

Anyways, was a very entertaining game, I think Juve will try to get their revenge in Torino, I'm already looking forward to that game :)

Gianluca Zambrotta and Emerson have admitted that the real Juventus didn’t show up against Bayern Munich.

After nine wins out of nine games, the Bianconeri lost 2-1 in Germany on Tuesday to surrender top spot in Group A of the Champions League.

"I think we weren’t determined enough in the first half and couldn’t find a way through, as they always got to the ball first," said the Italian.

"Things went a little better after the break, but we undoubtedly deserved to lose.

"The Coach tried to change a few things, but Bayern closed up in midfield and we couldn’t find the character that usually comes as part of the Juventus package.

"There are times when you’re not 100 per cent on the ball and that can be costly when facing squads of this quality.

"Capello was certainly angry at the final whistle, above all for the approach we took to the game, but we knew that as well. There’s still time to recover the gap and catch Bayern."

The home side took the lead thanks to a Christian Abbiati howler, but Zambrotta was quick to defend the goalkeeper.

"I don’t think I touched the ball, so Christian was taken by surprise," he added. "These new footballs can take some strange twists if they’re hit a certain way."

Emerson also accepted the fact that Bayern probably deserved to go home with the three points.

"It was tough and the team didn’t play at all well," conceded the Brazilian. "Bayern’s style is effective against our kind of football and they simply played better.

"We were really missing the right spirit and started very badly indeed, conceding two avoidable goals.

"It was never going to be easy to break down a team so physically strong and good at defending. It’s no shame to lose against such a great club and we can’t win all the time.

"We can only work to improve and be aware of that fact, while we compliment Bayern for their performance."

However, while Zambrotta wasn’t overly impressed with the ball, the midfielder criticised the playing surface.

"We were surprised that such a beautiful stadium can have a pitch this poor, as we could barely string two passes together without getting a strange bounce off the turf," he added.

"It took a while to get used to it and I spoke to Ze Roberto, who told me it’s always like that. Clearly this isn’t an excuse for the defeat, but it didn’t help."

Deisler is a boss and is only getting better, beckham better look out, lol,

also alot of people underestimate Munich, they are perhaps the most covented and pretisgious club after real madrid and manchester united, the kind of people who playerd for them, its just wicked

it was a almost a standard game fro munich i dont feel that juve played at theor best, and i dont think ibrovminahic(sp) is playing well together with trezguet, i say drop him and try trezgeut and mutu for the next match, or just play all 3, next transfer season they need to get some new strikers wh can work together, or rather a support striker instead, cause u cant count on del perio at his age anymore

Not to put bayern down in any way, but that was not the same Juve that dominates the serie A. it was a juve that was tired. Obviously you could see that Juve had no spark and wasnt as creative or technically as thrilling. Kinda surprising since Byern is a tough team, and i figured they would be more motivated. But what can you do. I don't think Bayern could have won 3-0 as amatter of fact, if juve had scored earlier, it could have changed their game a little bit. They seemed to be very low mentally yesterday, and if Juve had played to its ability...oh believe me, they would have destroyed bayern. but if you noticed, Ibrahimovich hardly did anything, hardly got the ball. The juve game is one where Ibra is more involved. And the game where Camoranesi and Neved brings the whole team up. THeiir game is very cautious and the game switches from one side to the other and with short technical passes and combinations.

Maybe destroy is not the right word. Some people would say that i am taking it rather good and in a very optimistic way. It is simply that Juventus has really been amazing this year. They have an overall hard working midfielders and have impressed me on the technical level as well. On top of their wins early in the season, they keep thier heads low and are very humble. For this i thank Caplello as well, even if he had good element of players to work with. Bayern however proved to be more humble and great physically. They deseved their win, but Juventus also deserved the loss, and this is not in anyway to put Bayern down. But knowing the Juventus game, i can tell you that the tuesday game was not the Juventus that happens to be in first place at the moment in serie A :D .
Juventus was very weak defensively, and it was a bad spell for everyone, it wasn't just one player, it was all of them. This kind of stuff, where one team is not in the right mindset does happen in soccer, and sometimes it can be very common and recurring at its worst case. However, i highly doubt that this could repeat with Juventus. But ofcourse one can't say ahead of time. I think Juve need a little rest, but i am sure capello knows what to do and will give them the amount of rest they need. Good luck to bayern the next game, i think it will be a lot tougher.

However, i highly doubt that this could repeat with Juventus. But ofcourse one can't say ahead of time. I think Juve need a little rest, but i am sure capello knows what to do and will give them the amount of rest they need. Good luck to bayern the next game, i think it will be a lot tougher.

Well let's hope that this game is tougher for us for your sake. Good Luck both Bayern and Juve are class sides unlike some teams *cough*Madrid*Cough*

just for info, ballack said that if he ever leaves he would only like to go to either liverpool or real madrid

Up until Abbiati ***ked up royally,he actually made some good saves. Bayern were more on the offensive up untill then though. After Abbiati's royal ***k up you could see the aprehension in the Juve defense in going forward. A bad goal like that totally deflates the team.

Patrick Vieira is set to start against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday night after recovering from injury.

Vieira, whose appearances have been limited by a troublesome groin injury over the last three weeks, was sorely missed during his side’s visit to Bavaria two weeks ago, which resulted in a 2-1 defeat for the Bianconeri.

Despite struggling during the second half of his first game back at the San Siro on Saturday night, the Frenchman is now back to full fitness.

“Vieira is no longer in pain,” said Capello on Tuesday. “He was flagging during the last 20 minutes in Milan at the weekend but I couldn’t take him off. I’d already made three substitutions by then.”

Don Fabio will be relieved to have his central fulcrum of Vieira and Emerson back in action, as Bayern are a physical side who are dangerous from set-pieces.

“Bayern have a very strong defence, they are determined and rock solid,” said Capello. “But when it comes to set-pieces they are extremely good. In my opinion they are best team in Europe in a dead-ball situation. It was set-pieces that did for us in both Munich and Milan, so we have to do something about it.”

Capello refutes the general consensus that his side have been beaten by worthy winners in their only two defeats this season.

“Maybe I saw a different game to you,” he said. “But I watched the Milan game again this morning and they scored from an own goal and two set-pieces which we should have prevented.”

“In Munich it was a similar story,” he added. “They scored a bizarre first goal and the other was from a set-piece. So we must work on our defending.”

One player whose return should help this cause is Christian Abbiati, who also returns from injury, while Gianluca Pessotto will be replaced by either Giorgio Chiellini or Manuele Blasi.

Mauro Camoranesi, meanwhile, is unlikely to recover in time from a knock sustained against Milan and will be replaced by either Adrian Mutu or Alessandro Del Piero.

For their part Bayern will be without three injured players. Owen Hargreaves and Bixente Lizarazu have been left behind along with the unfortunate Roque Santa Cruz, who suffered a cruciate ligament injury during Saturday’s win over Cologne.

Felix Magath’s side are confident of winning. His side is on maximum points in Group A and is also flying high in the Bundesliga. Their 2-1 win on Saturday was far from convincing, but they won nevertheless.

“Juve lost on Saturday,” said Magath. “But you have to ask yourself ‘why’. Maybe they had half a mind on the Champions League. That can happen sometimes. It happened to us and this is why we weren’t as good as usual against Cologne. But my players will certainly be up for this game and hopefully we can reverse what happened to us last year by doing the double over them this time around.”

That would spell double trouble for La Vecchia Signora, who, although virtual certainties to qualify from the group stage regardless of what happens tonight, can ill afford a third defeat in five games.

If you're in the US or North America you can get TeleLatino or Rai international. Both are showing the Juve game....and it's much nicer listening to an Italian announcer rather than that homer Tommy Smyth....

41st min....Juve has slower down a bit but Bayern is hardly threatening, in fact they (Bayern) are playing pretty defensively. Two yellows so far, one to a Bayern player, and one just now to Ibra. Del Piero has shown some class moves, but none materialized into goals and Z is on the right again with Chiellini on the left. I called this move at the end of the last season and said it would probably happen on the NT too, and it looks like it has. It makes sense too because neither Juve or the Italian NT had anyone on the right, but loads on the left. :thumb:

45th - Del Piero curls a freekick in, which narrowly misses a Juventino...cleared by Bayern...looks like that's it....whistle blown right on - no injury time....

Man, Abbiati was just HORRIBLE on the Bayern goal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Diesler took a free kick from far enough out that Abbiati should have been positioned a little better, it bounced once in front of him before landing in the back of the net. By the looks of Abbiati's dive it appears that he thought it was going to the other corner, but he had ample time to position himself properly.

I swear, if it was Gigi in net I doubt Bayern would have even won the first game, and this game would likely have ended 2-0. Lucky for Abbiati that Trez had another one up his sleeve.

Game ended 2-1 for Juve...

61' [1 - 0] D. Trezeguet

David Trezeguet scored an 85th-minute winner as Juventus edged a narrow victory against FC Bayern München to sidle alongside the Bundesliga outfit at the UEFA Champions League Group A summit.

Dramatic finale

http://www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Photo/competitions/UCL/362317_MEDIUMLANDSCAPE.jpg

The French striker had broken the deadlock just after the hour mark with a typically predatory goal. Sebastian Deisler fortuitously levelled with a sweeping free-kick that evaded everybody five minutes later and that looked enough to earn Bayern a share of the spoils until Trezeguet scored his second of the night late on, adroitly slotting in after cushioning Patrick Vieira's clever chip. There was still time for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to see red after receiving a second yellow card late on to take some of the gloss off the win for Juve.

New-look Juve
Fabio Capello made several changes to the side that lost 3-1 to AC Milan at the weekend. Alessandro Del Piero made a rare UEFA Champions League start behind the front pairing of Ibrahimovic and Trezeguet in an unfamiliar 3-4-1-2. Robert Kovač joined Lillian Thuram and Fabio Cannavaro at the back while Gianluca Zambrotta and Giorgio Chiellini flanked Vieira and Emerson.

Rough diamond
The visitors made two changes to the side that won 2-1 in the reverse fixture at the Fußball Arena München a fortnight ago, with the injured Bixente Lizarazu and Roque Santa Cruz replaced by Bastian Schweinsteiger and Claudio Pizarro. Deployed in a 4-4-2 with Martin Demichelis at the base of a combative midfield diamond, Bayern looked set to defend their three-point lead at the top of Group A.

Lively start
The game got off to a lively start when Trezeguet almost scored at both ends in the space of a minute. The striker first forced Abbiati to tip over the bar after glancing Zé Roberto's well-flighted free-kick dangerously goalwards, before quickly making amends by firing a fierce shot from distance which Oliver Kahn punched clear. Bayern should have taken the lead on 12 minutes when Emerson gave the ball away to Roy Makaay, but the Dutchman's poor connection was that of a striker struggling for form.

Ballack header
Trezeguet was similarly wasteful three minutes later when he applied a heavy boot to Zambrotta's near-post cross, when only a deft glance was required. Capello would have been disappointed by that and still more, when his side committed a flurry of fouls just outside the penalty area against a side he labelled "the best side in Europe at set-pieces" before the game. The visitors failed to capitalise, however, Michael Ballack coming closest when he guided Deisler’s cross just over the bar.

Nedvěd introduction
The game became scrappy towards the break, with bookings and poor passing making for a disjointed affair, but the introduction of Pavel Nedvěd for Del Piero immediately breathed new life into the Bianconeri after the restart. The Czech midfielder exchanged short passes with Ibrahimovic on the edge of the area only for Chiellini to curl a shot well over Khan's bar in the 47th minute and the two combined again shortly afterwards only for Willy Sagnol to block the Swede’s goalbound effort.

Trezeguet opener
It was the energetic Nedvěd that forced the opener on 62 minutes, his strong run eventually halted by Sagnol's desperate challenge inside the penalty area, Trezeguet pounced on the loose ball and slotted past Kahn. The lead was fleeting, however, and five minutes later the German side were level from one those set-pieces so dreaded by Capello. Deisler’s arcing delivery from all of 30 metres evaded everybody, including Abbiati, before dropping inside the far post. And it looked to have earned Bayern a draw until Trezeguet struck again.

Mighty Juve sink Bayern
By Lewis Rutledge - Created on 02 Nov 05

Juventus gained revenge for their defeat a fortnight ago by beating Bayern Munich 2-1 at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

The Italian club, playing their 100th UEFA Champions League game, moved top of Group A after a David Trezeguet brace saw off Bayern in an encounter of the highest quality.

In a bright start to the game play stretched from end to end as both sides came flying out of the blocks.

Bayern nearly opened the scoring in the first five minutes, an inswinging free kick from Sebastian Deisler causing problems in the Juve penalty area, and the returning Christian Abbiati had to be alert to tip over Fabio Cannavaro's misdirected header as he attempted to clear.

From the resulting corner Juventus launched a fast counter-attack, culminating in a fierce Trezeguet strike which was beaten away by Oliver Kahn.

Both teams looked shaky in defence early on, and the home side were nearly punished when Roy Makaay benefited from a lucky break and was gifted a golden opportunity, but the out-of-form striker pulled his shot wide from just inside the box.

Moments later Trezeguet missed an even better chance at the other end, firing wide from six yards out after great work from Gianluca Zambrotta, who did well to keep the ball in play before producing an inviting low cross.

As the game settled down chances started to thin out, and it was left to the midfielders to jostle for control.

Juventus showed glimpses of the form that has taken them top of Serie A, but lacked the final ball, while Bayern looked assured in possession and comfortably soaked up their opponents' pressure.

The German side always looked dangerous from set pieces, and threatened just before half time when Deisler's free kick was met by Claudio Pizarro's bullet header, but it flew a foot over the bar.

Juventus were unfortunate to see a penalty appeal waved away after a shove on Zambrotta, as the sides went into the break all square.

The interval seemed to revitalise Bayern, who almost caught Juventus cold seconds after the restart when Makaay failed to connect properly with a left wing cross.

Fabio Capello introduced Pavel Nedved for the home side, and the Czech star immediately started to pull the strings.

The tricky midfielder created a chance for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but the Swede's powerful shot was blocked by some brave Bayern defending.

Juventus began to play more positively, and were rewarded with a fine goal after 62 minutes.

The skilful Ibrahimovic played a clever pass to Nedved, who was brought down in the area. A penalty would surely have been awarded, but Trezeguet seized on Bayern's hesitation and smashed the ball past the helpless Kahn into the corner (61).

Bayern's reply was instant. Deisler curled a delightful free kick into the box from 35 yards out and it went straight in after neither attackers nor defenders managed to make contact (66).

The game continued to see-saw, with both sides trying their luck from distance without success.

With both sides likely to make it through the group, there was little riding on the game as it entered the final ten minutes, but Juventus showed the greater urgency.

Trezeguet restored the home side's lead after 84 minutes, neatly controlling Patrick Vieira's chip over the defence with his chest, before turning and striking in one fluid movement, the ball finding the bottom corner of the net.

Juve, who saw Ibrahimovic red carded in the final minutes, held on for a victory that was a tad cruel on Bayern, but on the evidence of this game both clubs should fancy their chances in this competition.
