Well best European team France had a draw game against one of the best Asian team Korea in 2006.
France 1-1 Korea.
Teams like Korea, Australia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Japan can beat teams like Slovenia, Slovakia, San Marino, Belarus, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Bosnia, Scotland , Luxemburg etc...
So what you said is not correct at all.
Even the worst european team is better than the best asian (or stuff) team...so another time, don't say s***.

i think this thread is a bit dillusional..you cant compare south america vs europe..
south america has only 2 great teams..brazil and argentina.who mostly came european immigrants anyways..hence the passion for the sport.dont tell me the sport was invented in s.a.
but now grant brazil is historically the best team. and still one of the top 5 probably.but right now we all now that some teams like france can beat brazil.
so even brazil being probably the best team in history is not like they have won the world cup 20 times..just 1 more time than italy and 2 more times than germany.
granted brazil is strong. also argentina.
in other words
s.a=
2 great teams(brazil,argentina)
2-3 decent teams as of now(ecuador, uruguay)
but the rest????. you guessed it.
---
europe has way more(quantity) of good teams:
they could give brazil a run for their money, and as we know even defeat.
italy
germany
france
----
other good teams:
croatia
england
sweden
turkey
portugal
spain
denmark
ukraine
blabla
---
and the list goes on and on about decent teams.
brazil and argentina aside the good teams of europe would beat any south american team silly. and the good teams are more than 10 not just 2-4 teams.
so why they could say south america is better just because of brazil?...thats called s.a jumping on the bandwagon
and you cant count lets say san marino, vatican city, faroe islands wich is 100 times smaller than the smallest country in s.a
nothing agaisnt s.a
s.a has the best team granted.thats their only advantage really.
and europe has more quality teams.
but when it comes to tourneys europe has better record anyway you put it against s.a

Europe - what to
Sth Am - how to
The sport was invented in England - the game, invented in Brazil  ...
europe has more quality teams
I assume the accent of your phrase is more on MORE than on QUALITY, am I correct? :ronaldo: ...
More accurate would be to rewrite it as that: "Europe has more...(average) quality teams"...
With what we'll totally agree...

Do you know why Europeans got mainly defensive from 1970 on (Holland 74 and France late 80s as honorable exceptions)?...
Simply cuzz - after the offensive trauma inflicted by Pelé & Cy from 50-70 - they had no option but elect South America as the eternal wallpaper AGAINST which the back (and the front) of their footballistic minds function...
From 1958 on, an "escapist" and programmatic defensive posture started then to shape all their tactical conceptions (its sad but real how young Europeans hit the chest full of pride for their "impennetrable" European 10-1 formations of the 90's...)
That means: from 58 to our days Europe plays in function of the Brazilian - & by extension South American - highly offensive game* (one eye as allways on their navel, but the other on us)...
Yeah, we don't have that quantity, but we have (the) quality...
SA can have Europe easely under control with a quick remote control click...

That's what - in its essence - the expression "owing" really means...

* As a matter a fact that process had already started in the 30s-50s, with the 2 Uruguayan WCs and 2 Olympic golds...

Of course.
We saw Internationale beat Barca in World Club Championship.
South America won 8 WCs and Europe won 8 Wcs. But European football nations always choked horribly when they play outside of Europe.
In South Africa, obviously South American team will win it.

Not true!...
From the 1st WCs (3rd in Italy 38, 4th in Switzerland 54), passing by Pelé times (champion Sweden 58, champion vs Benfica in Lisbon 62), to France 98 (vice-champion), 4th Germany 74, best team of Spain 82, vice-champion Italy 90) - in all those years the WCs were in Europe - SA ruled in Europe (even when wasn't 1st)...
Without counting the annual shows SA players give in those European circuses you call clubs ...
That's simply high-performance - right there in your backyard, kid!...

(About 82, who said Brazil was the best team of that Cup was not me, but the European specialized press, including the Italian! - not always the best win, AND THAT'S TRUE)!...
Give me one, but one, Italian player of that 82 WC that could at least scratch the back of Zico, Falcão, Sócrates, Eder; nevertheless they beat Brazil (on a chance play), & that's simply part of football: the same happened to Brazil in 50, to Hungary in 54, to Germany in 66, to Argentina in 90, to Brazil in 98).
Congrats to your Italy: you had the obligation of being WC in 82: you beat the best in the World!...

In all fairness, Futsal, U-20 WC and U-17 WC do not matter at all. You havent included the olympic tournament , which was more prestigious in the pre WWII era than the WC. Europe leads SA 17-3 in that.
If you ware going to include Futsal, then you might as well include the ladies WC in which Europe again has a much better record than SA.

In all the WCs outside of Europe, apart from the 1930 and 1950 WC, atleast one European team has made it to the finals.
Compare this with the S American record in Europe.
2006,1966,1982,1934,1954,1974 and 1938. These were all European finals. So, if anything, leaving the 1958 abberation, South American teams have not performed well in Europe. But European teams have consistently made it to the finals in non European countries.
This perspective cannot be overlooked.

for years the olympics were a mere amateurish competition, they didnt want to compete with the world cup, so that was the rule, no professionals, thats when the socialist countries rules
the u-20 and u-17, only shows this 'EU forge players' is utter BS
funny cause, olympics now is a U-23 and you seem to care

FUTSAL SHOULDN'T COUNT, IT'S A PARALLEL SPORT & STILL IS AN INTERNATIONALLY YOUNG SPORT: NACHI IS RIGHT...
WOMEN'S FOOTBALL SHOULD COUNT THOUGH (EVERY SPORT HAS - & MUST HAVE - ITS LEGITIMATE FEMININE COUNTERPART): NACHI IS RIGHT...
THE OLYMPICS THOUGH ARE & HAVE ALWAYS BEEN (SEMI) AMATEURISH: ITS "BIGGER PRESTIGE" IN THE 30S AND 40S DERIVED FROM BEING AN OLDER, MORE ENCOMPASSING [AS FAR AS THE NUMBER OF COUNTRIES & THE VARIETY OF THE SPORTS INVOLVED] EUROPE-CENTERED TOURNAMENT (ONLY EUROPEANS WOULD AFFORD PRACTICING FOOTBALL WITHOUT ANY COMMERCIAL SPONSORING, JUST FOR THE SAKE OF THE "OLYMPIC IDEAL"), THAT'S WHY A GREAT PART OF THOSE EURO TITLES BELONGS TO "AMATEURISH" EASTERN EUROPE: XIKU IS RIGHT...
SAYING THOUGH THAT "U-20 WC and U-17 DO NOT MATTER AT ALL" IS AN EXAGGERATION: THEY ARE SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES OF PRO FOOTBALL; THEIR RANGE IS RESTRICTED BY AGE THOUGH: BOTH NACHI AND XIKU ARE RIGHT (OR WRONG)...
1958 WAS NOT AN "ABERRATION": IT WAS THE DEFINITIVE CONFIRMATION OF A TREND, INITIATED IN 50 & 54...
A TREND THAT BECAME THE RULE (AND NOT THE EXCEPTION) FROM 1958 TO OUR DAYS: THE FAMOUS 1882 BRAZILIAN TEAM IN SPAIN, THE 2ND PLACE IN ITALY 90, THE 2ND PLACE IN FRANCE 98, AND EVEN THE 1974 4TH & THE 2006 5TH PLACE "FIASCOS" IN GERMANY - BRAZIL DIDN'T DO GOOD IN 06, ALL RIGHT, BUT WHO DID? NOT EVEN "THE CHAMPS" DID (DON'T KILL ME LAURY, BUT IT'S TRUE)!... - WERE MORE THAN HONORABLE EUROPEAN CAMPAIGNS...
EVEN IN THE WORST YEARS, BRAZIL ALWAYS ARRIVED TO ALL EUROPEAN WORLD CUPS, IF NOT AS THE MAIN, AT LEAST AS ONE OF THE FAVOURITE RUNNER-UPS...
A TREND WHICH WAS AND HAS BEEN BRILLIANTLY STRESSED BY SUCCESSIVE VICTORIOUS WCC RESULTS, TOO...
In all the WCs outside of Europe (...) at least one European team has made it to the finals
That "all" is not able to disguise the fact that, out of 18 WCs in History, only 4 were played in South American territory, and other 4 ones in absolutely neutral continents: North America, Asia (Mexico twice, USA, Korea/Japan)...
So - where it really matters: in your main enemy's house - only twice you got to the finals, and never won any...
We arrived 3 times to a final in your continent, with 5 x less countries, and significantly won 1!...
Compare this with the S American record in Europe
Just did it, mate... What do you have to say? :D ...
Odds entirely in your favour, and, since 1958, you've never surpassed us...
SOUTH AM RELATIVE ADVANTADGE IS BLATANT...

THE WOMEN'S RECORDS SHOULD COUNT (EVERY SPORT HAS - & MUST HAVE - ITS LEGITIMATE FEMININE COUNTERPART): NACHI IS RIGHT...
FUTSAL SHOULDN'T COUNT, IT'S A PARALLEL SPORT & BESIDES IS STILL AN INTERNATIONALLY YOUNG SPORT: NACHI IS RIGHT...
i think it kinda depends...futsal aint conclusive in comparisons, but still is a variation of the same abilities and skills brought to another environment and conditions, not coincidently, fifa organizes both competitions and i personnaly think futsal should be in olympics in place of many sports, even men football
i ommited two other points when pasting and copying: awards to world player of the year 7x7, cause fifa only chooses players from EU (and we still tie this shit) and beach soccer SA 10x2 EU, since many countries didnt play it, just like women football for a long time in many countries like in SA

The 1962 FIFA World Cup, the seventh staging of the World Cup, was held in Chile from May 30 to June 17. Chile was chosen as hosts by FIFA in June 1956, as the World Cup returned to the continent of South America after 12 years. I know you want to win the argument, but to say that was not very clever engineering, Vip  ...
Nonetheless, Brazil did win a "world cup" in Lisbon in 1962 (besides the 1962 World Cup in Chile)...
Satisfied?...
The WCC is a World Cup, wish you or not, mate, only with clubs, and that's the truth that you & Laury hate to accept...
As a matter of fact, in 1962, Brazil was world champion twice, one in Chile and the other in Europe :smoking: ...
I even gave you a visual example of that world cup:
Champ in Lisbon 62

in the 70s the intercontinental cup wasnt the most important cup for europeans...bayern did not play 2 years, ajax did not play 2 years...the reason was argentinien clubs and the storys in intercontinental cup games before...example..after a interconinental cup game in argentina 2 argentinian players was jailed for 1 months and 1 other was suspended for lifetime.it was a game against a italien club....
bayern and ajax wasnt intrest to risk injurys of keyplayers against such southamerican clubs.......

Europeans never decided what's more important or not for world football...
Maybe before 1930...
Besides the facts happened in those 2 or 3 years of the 70's were rare exceptions due to localized causes...
European savagery also happened in Italy against Santos in the 1st game of the 1963 WCC against Milan; they broke Pelé in the San Siro for the 2 last games in Brazil: Santos didn't run away though and won the title...
Besides, the prestige of no tournament is shaken because of lack of interest of anyone...
England - the inventors of the sport - never "gave a monkeys" about the WC up to 1958, and the WC kept being the WC...
Pelé, after FIFA'S authorized 1966 slaughtering of South American NT's in England, promised never more play a WC against "such European butcher's teams" either, but the WCs would go on without him anyway...
If Pelé wasn't able to disauthorize a tournament, who else would? Mickey Roonney? :ronaldo: ...
European clubs always participated of the tournament (99% of the times with their full teams) giving the maximum they could (ask Liverpool and Barcelona)...
The rest is cheap talk...
Besides is this a game for men or sissies? ("we are so tired", "prefer to play at home", "my feet are worth millions", "they are so violent")...
Enough with old excuses...

You're right e-mode, and that's why is fascinating...
Europe invented the sport, South America developed it to a point they even surpassed the master, the master didn't like it and try to our days to revert the situation, but it's complicated...
They don't know exactly as it happened and try to understand it (although most of the times they won't concede they are behind), and the theories and explanations to that fact can have several origins (social, economic, cultural, psychologic, climatic, biologic, esoteric , anthropologic etc) that go far beyond football itself...
That's why in a thread like this sometimes you'll find people discussing about the sex of the angels, and you shouldn't be surprised with that...
In the "Europe vs S. America" thread "you can talk just about everything" because it's in the spirit of the thread itself...
Here "being strictly on topic" is often "being off-topic": Bosanac started discussing "if it was harder for Euros or SAs to classify for WCs", but the title of his thread suggests and allows much more than that - and that's where resides its charm...
If we just restrained ourselves to "that" specific discussion, the most popular thread in this Forum would just be dead by now...
I imagine you don't want it, do you?...

Yes its hard to understand the theories & explainations because of the various factors contributing to its development where the protege overcome the master. But its bound to happen when the master still clings to old theories while the protege experiments & develops new techique far beyond the master

If we elaborate a bit on it, maybe we'll end out discovering that the topic itself (Europe x S. America) is off-topic...
Perhaps it should be more righteously named "Europe x S. America x Asia")...
And the WCC confrontation in Japan, with the participation of the Asian champion, already points to that (see how in this thread off-topic statements can intertwine with on-topic ones?)...

Chinese Inventions
Papermaking
http://sln.fi.edu/tfi/info/current/inline/paper.gif
Chinese legend tells that the new invention of paper was presented to the Emperor in the year 105 AD by Cai Lun. Archeological evidence, however, shows that paper was in use two hundred years before then. Either way, the Chinese were significantly ahead of the rest of the world. The craft of papermaking relied upon an abundance of bamboo fiber to produce a fine quality paper. In China: Ancient Arts and Sciences, the papermaker uses only the traditional materials and methods to produce fine art paper.
Printing
http://sln.fi.edu/tfi/info/current/inline/print.gif
The Chinese invention of moveable type, credited to Bi Sheng in the year 1045 AD, did not significantly impact Chinese society. Three hundred years later in Europe, Gutenberg's development of moveable type revolutionized the Western world. Why? The Chinese language uses 3000 to 5000 characters in an average newspaper. The English language, in comparison, uses 26 characters in an average newspaper. Clearly, manipulating 5000 characters on a printing press took much longer than moving 26. Still, the invention of moveable type furthered Chinese technology and its role in the advancement of human civilization.
Gunpowder
http://sln.fi.edu/tfi/info/current/inline/fireworks.gif
Imagine their enemy's surprise when the Chinese first demonstrated their newest invention in the eighth century AD. Chinese scientists discovered that an explosive mixture could be produced by combining sulfur, charcoal, and saltpeter (potassium nitrate). The military applications were clear. New weapons were rapidly developed, including rockets and others that were launched from a bamboo tube. Once again, the raw materials at hand, like bamboo, contributed ideas for new technologies.
Compass
http://sln.fi.edu/tfi/info/current/inline/compass.gif
By the third century AD, Chinese scientists had studied and learned much about magnetism in nature. For example, they knew that iron ore, called magnetite, tended to align itself in a North/South position. Scientists learned to "make magnets" by heating pieces of ore to red hot temperatures and then cooling the pieces in a North/South position. The magnet was then placed on a piece of reed and floated in a bowl of water marked with directional bearings. These first navigational compasses were widely used on Chinese ships by the eleventh century
AD.

Ancient Inventions
How Soccer Originated
http://www.inventions.org/images/soccer.gif
A medieval picture of Chinese soccer, here a practice session in the garden.
The clear ancestor of soccer was the Chinese game of t'su chu, played by the third century B.C. The ball was made of leather, at first stuffed, then in later times inflated so that it carried farther. The feet and body, but not the hands, were used to propel the ball. In an aristogratic version played in front of the emperor's palace, the opposing teams tried to kick the ball through a tiny hole in a silken net. Even the emperor would occasionally take part. Women also played in a version of the game with eight players called Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea.
This Chinese "sport of kings" was, oddly enough, the sport of peasants in England during the fourteenth century A.D.—mobs number hundreds played; broken limbs were common and deaths not unknown.
The American Indian equivalent to English soccer was lacrosse (or bagataway in Irroquois), which was played in the eastern half of North America. It was described by European observers in the seventeenth century as an ancient sport.
Up to five hundred warriors on each side, often from neighboring villages, took part in this roving battle, with one team painted dark and the other light. The idea was to gather the deerskin ball in a hollowed-out stick (in later times a curved racket with sinew or hemp strings) and run with it toward the goal. Scoring was made even more difficult by the fact that the goalposts were formed by medicine men, who wandered across the field of play as the spirits directed them.

THAT'S PRECISELY WHAT I'VE EVER BEEN SAYING, MATE!...
The WCCs (and the WCs) are the way out (or the way in) for ALL the continents...
The more we open the range of WCs and WCCs the more world representative those tournaments will be!...
And the more the already battered European monopoly of football will shrink!...
As far as SA the opening of new football fronteers is oxygen: there will appear new football markets, and the Euros will be able to divide their "passion" for us with other centers...
That desestabilizes them, however...
EUROPEANS WANT TO "CHOKE" THE WCC (TOO LATE THOUGH) BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT SOONER OR LATER THE "REST OF THE WORLD" WILL CHOKE THEM (SA IS ALREADY DOING IT - BETTER: HAS ALREADY DONE IT!)...
All that will rest to them is Ronaldo's "cockroach death" dance! ...

Just thought I'd mention it since you seem hell bent on mentioning it all the time. BTW, I am Australian and even I wouldn't say that Italy cheated in our game. We simply could not finish them when we had the advantage and anyone that understands football knows how dumb of a tackle that Neill made. He left himself wide open and should have never done it, of course he's deflected criticism by constantly saying that it was a dive. What else do you expect him to do? I still like him, and am happy that my country did as well as they did.

Neill? No, of course he shouldn't have done that, bad joke King Kong :p But he didn't do himself any favors by giving up such a bad foul. I was pissed off in the beginning and it was easy to go into excuse mode and point the finger. Heck, there was 4 pages of news stories dedicated to that, but each one failed to mention that we already had a full half of extra man and could only get one shot on net. So we really don't have anyone else but ourselves to add to the blame, if blame needs to be given that is! Neill did what he needed to do I suppose. It's our lack of international experience and technical grace. But, at least we beat England all the time :D

Funny that there was a recent poll in Australian newspapers and the general public believes that the Ashes is our most coveted prize next to, you guessed it, the World Cup of Soccer.

You just showed Aussies are true gentlemen!...
Neil didn't commit any foul, the guy tripped on him.
In basketball this is very well defined: if you are already in your position before the opponent moves towards you, you have the preference.
Neil was already in a passive position before the Italian guy started moving towards him (he was on the ground, dam).
He did nothing, just stayed there and he was in his right.
In that situation, a foul in order to be characterized as such would demand an active posture on Neill's part.
He should have been the one who charged (or made some move) towards his opponent, and not the opposite.
What I think is missing here was not necessarilly Neil's lack of international experience, but rather your own lack of experience in observing football - &, more specifically, that play...
But saying the adversary was right (even not being) sounds very elegant indeed...
Not only playing football requires tradition; annalyzing it too ;) ...

Didn't read correctly, Vipa: gotta see what's written "in between lines"...
"Already battered monopoly" is not monopoly...
You chose to "ignore" the obvious ironic connotation I gave to the term...
How could I have said they have a real "monopoly", if in the last 50 years SAs dominated the game?...
"Monopoly" they have of good stadiums, of money to give to TVs (through sponsors or not) in order to transmit their games worldwide, of marketing tricks - not of football though (that game played within the 4 lines, you know)...
Arrogant because I point out the facts? Give me an example in this Forum about me gratuitously "bashing" them (you won't: because there isn't)...
It sounds like that to you because - you wish it or not - you have an European upbringing that makes you as sensitive as them to criticism coming from "outsiders"...
That's where (disguised in false modesty) resides YOUR arrogance: defending Laury's & other members' obviously arrogant attitudes just denounces that upbringing  ...

You just showed Aussies are true gentlemen!...
Woa, hold on a second. I'm one of the few that can admit it wasn't a dive. The majority still think it was and that if it didn't happen we would have won and won the world cup too. That's just a tad out of touch with reality. I'm also not one to be won over that easily with flattery KingKong, save that for Laury :p hehe
Neil didn't commit any foul, the guy tripped on him.
Neill is responsible for his actions like all the players are. He fell to ground trying to block the player because he really didn't have any other choice. Who considers that sort of thing good defending anyway? I don't. I see other top defenders in the world doing that sort of thing in similar situations.
In basketball this is very well defined: if you are already in your position before the opponent moves towards you, you have the preference.
Neil was already in a passive position before the Italian guy started moving towards him (he was on the ground, man).
Not really. Neill was still moving into him as he slid on the ground. Like I said, it was a bad tackle on Neill's part.
He did nothing, just stayed there and he was in his right.
In that situation, a foul in order to be characterized as such would demand an active posture on Neill's part.
Sliding into the player is active though, and if you watch closely Neill's arm hits the Italian. The Italian was going down and just made it look good, but then so did a good many other players in that cup. C. Ronaldo, Henry, Adriano, J. Cole, and even our own Aloisi.
He should have been the one who charged towards his opponent, and not the opposite.
But King Kong, even I can admit that he did, why can't you?
What I think is missing here was not necessarylly Neil's lack of international experience, rather your own lack of experience in observing that play)...
Not only playing football requires tradition; annalyzing it too ;) ...
Look, I know what happened, and it was just as hard for me to admit as it will be for you. But I can admit it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2PgG8j0gyQ
Neill goes down as the Italian is about to go around him like he earlier did to Bresciano, but the slide takes Neill into the Italian and his arms clip him. The Italian is going down, so he makes the most out of it. If you've been watching soccer long, this shouldn't be news to you :p
And why are we talking about this in this thread. I thought it was supposed to be about how much better S. America is than Europe? Even though Europe monopolizes the game?

Besides you're preferring to ignore the ironic connotation I'm giving to the term...

And the more the already battered European monopoly of football will shrink!...
not monopoly of money, stadiums, and contracts.
Arrogant because I say the truth? Give me a factual example in this Forum about me being gratuitously "bashing" them (you won't: because it doen't exist)...
What truth? All I see as an outsider is arrogance in stating such things as dominance and that they play bad and the like. Maybe you don't see it, but it's certainly coming across that way.
It sounds like that to you because - you wish it or not - you have an European upbringing that makes you as sensitive as them to criticism coming from "outsiders" ...
Well if being a 4th generation Aussie means that somewhere along the line one of me Grand pappy's was shipped out of the UK and dropped off somewhere on Botany Bay means I have European upbringing, then fine. Other than that, you're grasping at straws.
Look, I don't want to cause any tensions. I'm just giving you some feedback. Ignore it if you wish, it's no sweat off my back, but I found that sometimes being a bit humble is worth it. It saves you a lot of energy constantly fighting invisible enemies :p

I remember reading some scandals happening in Brazil and Portugal too. In fact, I remember that Fifa threatened Portugal to clean up it's match fixing or face elimination from the World Cup in 2006. It was covered in an SBS program here in Australia just around November 2005 sometime.
I still like him, and am happy that my country did as well as they did.
all right u know that I'm the 1st person that says that this wasn't a penalty at all...but I also know why the ref gave us that penalty...we played in ten all the second half 4....what???cmon don't say (even if u hate Marco coz everybody hates him) that Materazzi did a red-card fault...he didn't touch Mark...he made fault on Zambrotta!

Europeans WANT to monopolyze football: didn't say they do monopolyze it...
That's their pretension...
Besides, I don't bash European football: I just respond with facts to the arrogance of some of its supporters...
I know facts can hurt, but's not the fact's fault: then, they say I'm the arrogant one, just because make them face a sometimes not so colourful reality...
arrogance kk???u're talking about me????

Woa, hold on a second. I'm one of the few that can admit it wasn't a dive. The majority still think it was and that if it didn't happen we would have won and won the world cup too. That's just a tad out of touch with reality. I'm also not one to be won over that easily with flattery KingKong, save that for Laury :p hehe
Neill is responsible for his actions like all the players are. He fell to ground trying to block the player because he really didn't have any other choice. Who considers that sort of thing good defending anyway? I don't. I see other top defenders in the world doing that sort of thing in similar situations.
Not really. Neill was still moving into him as he slid on the ground. Like I said, it was a bad tackle on Neill's part.
Sliding into the player is active though, and if you watch closely Neill's arm hits the Italian. The Italian was going down and just made it look good, but then so did a good many other players in that cup. C. Ronaldo, Henry, Adriano, J. Cole, and even our own Aloisi.
But King Kong, even I can admit that he did, why can't you?
Europe vs:croc: S. America

Had to show a closer evidence of who touched who (maybe a VT replay)...
You know how easy is for anyone to say: "my compatriot" touched nobody ("t'was the opposite!")...
Yes, the referee might be wrong, but also could be right: the play was too quick...
Anyway you recognize at last it was a foul (and a providential one!), and, if it was, it necesarilly had to be a red card one: without it, the Aussie guy would run completely free towards the goal (&, in that case, you know that even a normal foul has to be punished with red...)

Yes, that deserves a red. He didn't touch the ball at all, and he went in with both feet.

QUESTION 1: Where would you want Neil placing that hand of his (had asked you: IN HIS POCKET?);
Well, doesn't really matter anyhow since players are responsible for their hands all the time. He got himself into the mess in the first place and should have just admitted he was sloppy. Instead he's sent a bunch of young players and fans into more of a frenzy believing that Australia could have won the cup. Realistic fans should be happy that we did as well as we did, but instead many of the fans of World Cup only think we could have won it all. Get what I mean?
QUESTION 2: When and where was that "tackle" that only you saw?...
I know there was some artistic flair in the Italian, duh!! Neill's tackle was sloppy and left the open door for it, and making contact with him made it no better for Neill. He got in the way of a goal scoring opportunity in the box and paid a heavy price for it. What get's me is that we had a good half of the game to win it all but hardly pressured them significantly. I know about possession, and yeah we had a lot but so what when you can't do anything with it. In fact, I think we had one or two shots on net with all that possession while they had the same or better? Point is, we just didn't have the technique or the experience to know what to do with the advantage. We simply were not good enough, but we did damn well and that's what people here should be discussing instead. Discussions on how to get better by learning from teams like them and of course form you South Americans ;)
QUESTION 3: And, last but not least, do you believe or not in Adam and Eve?...
You don't look that "innocent"...But it's Christmas time & people read a lot the Bible...
You are a 3rd Millennium Australian still behaving like an member of the old Commonwealth: i.e., stubbornly denying the rest of the world (& even your own country!) ...
I'm behaving like what, and denying whom?
That "wealth" has been "severely battered" in the XXth century, and, as a matter of fact, became quite "common" :ronaldo: ...
There's that word again, "battered". Why are you so into battering things? First it was this invisible monopoly that you say Europe has and now some wealth that I am supposedly working from? What "wealth" btw? :)
Forget a bit your useless "monopoly cardboard game" argument...

Nice diversion, but you still lose King Kong :D You're obsessed, but I suppose it's a harmless one :D I don't get it though, no one on this tiny little insignificant Island down under understands this battle between Europe and South America though. Can you explain it to us again? :D

Trust me, I'm not the only one in Australia that knows it wasn't a foul and I don't care about it anymore. I was watching it on the big screen on the streets and of course there were heaps of mixed feelings. Brazil and Argentina are the only two in the top 10. Not even Uruguay is in there which is disappointing for me since we beat them :D and so it was my only claim to fame of being better than South America as a continent. You do know that some people consider Australia a continent right?
For Europe the top 5 teams are:
Italy
France
Germany
England
Holland
all of them in the top 10.
So without going on and on, it looks like we have a winner in the who's better debate between Europe and South America? ;)
{can't wait for King Kong's picture threads} :ronaldo:
I mean, you can't seriously be picking South America who after Brazil and Argentina don't have another team until the 30th ranking positions can you? :noidea:
Spain and Czech Republic should probably be higher on that list too. I think Spain has a class team!! They should probably be 8th if the rankings were fair.

My question was, as I recall... for an average team where is it harder to qualify for the World Cup?
Like, in South America you can not consider Brazil or Argentina as average teams because they're the best, so you would have to pick a different team which would have you compete against BRA and ARG to qualify. Difficult? I would say so. A lot harder road to World Cup than for an average team in Europe.

Very true, while big teams in Europe face teams like Andorra, Liechtenstein etc. they are as good ensured of already 6 points against these teams ( facing them 2 times ).
Personally I think they should make a pre-qualifying phase for these teams, I remember a game Holland - Andorra ( 4 - 0 ) where we simply outclassed them and all that happened was frustration from the opponent and trying to injure our players, this quality difference is just to big while I don't think that's the same for South America.

Europe the same as well. Most groups have 2 powerful teams and the rest average.

Really? There are four WC places for SA. Five including the play off spot. So the other 8 SA teams are playing for 2 or 3 places.
As Vipaman says that means 2 or 3 SA teams ranked out of the top 30 are guaranteed to qualify. There are 20 European teams ranked higher than the other SA teams. As there are 14 European places that means at least six teams ranked higher than the other SA teams WILL NOT make it.
That's one definition that confirms it's harder to qualify in Europe.
As there are 52 European sides, that means the average teams will be roughly in the middle 17. There aren't enough places for the top 17 so that gives the average teams even less of a chance.
Despite their consistently high position in world football, Holland missed out in 2002 because of the quality fighting for limited places.
Turkey reached the WC semis in 2002, but missed out in 2006. As did European Champions of 2004, Greece. Denmark is ranked 10 places above the average SA teams...but there was no place for them either.
While above average European teams can't get through qualifying for the WC, average SA teams are guaranteed 2 places and a play off opportunity for a 3rd place.
Common sense should tell you that it's harder for average Euro teams than average SA teams.

Just looking at the top 10 list you see these teams which are more or less the same quality, with some minor differences
France, Germany, Italy, England, Holland, Brazil, Argentina
Ok some believe major differences, but the point is that they are the top teams of Europe and South America. Europe has a higher quantity of top teams, which makes competition a little more dense. South American has two top teams then a big gap in quality.
Of course it's harder to qualify from Europe for top teams, I reckon. Argentina and Brazil will always qualify from South America, but in Europe like Bristol said, there's always a quality team that doesn't make it.

South americaFerenc's answer to Vipaman's was simple and final: I'd wish I had that mortal concision in my posts! :ronaldo: ...
Anyway, the truth is that numbers can be tricky, if you analyze them in a too quick way:
Europe has 5 top countries among the top 10, its true; SA has 2 (with 1st and 3rd places).
Europe nonetheless has 46 countries, and South America 9!: 5 times more countries!...
In order to truly rule, Europe should have then the obligation of having at least 10 top countries more than the SAs (5 x 2=10) among the 10 top ones - AND ALWAYS DOMINATE THE 3 1ST PLACES: SPECIALLY THE FIRST! ;) ...
In fact, Europe should ALWAYS have all the 10 first posts!...
Just five (scattered between 2nd & 10th) is also very little for the amount of seats(14) Euro nations have compared to SA (4-5) in the World Cup: in view of all that, 9 WC titles is a very scarce achievement.
That's why I say that the 'tie' btw Euros and SAs in amount of WC titles (9 x 9) is a flagrant statistical fallacy! ...
If SA at least had their 'insignificant 2' , let's say, in 5th & 7th places, or 8th & 10th, I might agree...
But 1st and 3rd (for decades & decades)...
No doubt SA rules.
Fifa thinks South America is better!
South America
4.5 out of 9 make it to the WC
while in Europe
14 out of 50 (including Montenego) make it
Fifa thinks South America is better!
