Tέλειωσε το μαρτύριο...

Αυτό που όλοι περιμέναμε συνέβηκε στο Παρίσι. Οι Γάλλοι αποφασισμένοι όσο ποτέ σ' αυτά τα προκριματικά του Παγκοσμίου Κυπέλλου 2006, έπαιξαν επιθετικά και φυσικά χωρίς καμμιά διάθεση να δείξουν οίκτο στην Εθνική μας ομάδα. Η διαφορά δυναμικότητας ήταν χαώδης και το 4-0 ίσως να φαντάζει και λίγο κολακευτικό για το αντιπροσωπευτικό μας συγκρότημα αφού, αν δεν ήταν κι ο Μορφής, η σούμα θα ήταν ακόμη μεγαλύτερη. Το τελικό σκορ σφράγισε με τον χειρότερο τρόπο την μίζερη παρουσία της ομάδας μας στη διοργάνωση. Το μαρτύριο όμως τέλειωσε και θα πρέπει να κοιτάξουμε μπροστά. Παρακολουθείστε λεπτό προς λεπτό την αναμέτρηση.

Αλλωστε δεν υπήρχε καμμιά αμφιβολία πολύ πριν ξεκινήσει ο αγώνας, ότι ο νικητής θα ήταν η Γαλλία. Το μόνο που μας ενδιέφερε ήταν το τελικό αποτέλεσμα. Και με δεδομένο ότι οι "τρικολόρ" ήθελαν νίκη με τουλάχιστον τέσσερα γκολ σε περίπτωση ισοβαθμίας με την Ελβετία, μπορούσαμε να υποψιαστούμε ότι το σκορ θα ήταν βαρύ. Ελπίζαμε βέβαια ότι οι διεθνείς μας θα δώσουν συνέχεια στις καλές εμφανίσεις και θα άντεχαν την πίεση των 80 χιλιάδων θεατών, διψασμένων για πολλά γκολ.

Από το πρώτο λεπτό, η ομάδα του Ντομενέκ πήρε την πρωτοβουλία των κινήσεων και έδειξε ποιος θα ήταν το αφεντικό στο γήπεδο. Η Γαλλία, με μαέστρο τον Ζιντάν, αλώνιζε το γήπεδο ενώ οι παίκτες της Κύπρου έκαναν ότι μπορούσαν. Οπως ήταν αναμενόμενο, ο Αγγελος Αναστασιάδης, προτίμησε το 4-5-1 αλλά το παράδοξο είναι ότι δεν ξεκίνησε με τον Μιχάλη Κωνσταντίνου αλλά με τον Γιασεμάκη. Χωρίς το μεγάλο μας όπλο στην επίθεση, ήταν σχεδόν αναμενόμενο ότι σε καμμιά περίπτωση δεν θα φέρναμε τους Γάλλους σε δύσκολη θέση.

Ανέπτυξαν τρελό ρυθμό στα αρχικά στάδια του αγώνα, όμως ο Σισέ βρέθηκε σε κακή βραδιά και δεν μπορούσε να τελιώσει τις φάσεις. Μετά το πρώτο εκρητκτικό δεκάλεπτο, η Γαλλία κατέβασε ρυθμούς αφού η αμυντική διάταξη της Κύπρου στεκόταν περίφημα. Τουλάχιστον έξω από την περιοχή, γιατί όταν η μπάλα περνούσε εντός μεγάλης περιοχής δημιουργήτο πανικός και αναστάτωση.

Οι Γάλλοι δεν δημιουργούσαν εύκολα φάσεις μέχρι την είσοδο του Ντιαρά στη θέση του τραυματία Βιεϊρά. Ο νεαρός Γάλλος διεθνής άλλαξε την εικόνα του αγώνα και έδειξε άξιος αντικαταστάτης του άσου της Γιουβέντους. Στο 29' δεχθήκαμε το πρώτο τέρμα από τον Ζιντάν, που έγινε κάτοχος της μπάλας από σέντρα του Σανιόλ και με άψογο στυλ την κάρφωσε στα δίχτυα του Μορφή. Ο,τι καλύτερο για τους γηπεδούχους, που άνοιξαν πια φτερά και σύντομα πέτυχαν και δεύτερο τέρμα με τον Βιλτόρ.

Aπ' εκεί και πέρα, ήταν λογικό να σκεφτούμε το χειρότερο για την ομάδα μας, η οποία όντως δέχθηκε πίεση και κινδύνευσε να δεχθεί κι άλλα τέρματα, ειδικά στο 41' όταν ο Σισέ έφυγε εντελώς μόνος στην αντεπίθεση αλλά ο Μορφής έπεσε σωστά και απέκρουσε τον κίνδυνο. Βέβαια δεν αποφύγαμε το τρίτο τέρμα με το Ντορασό. Στο 3-0 και με τις ομάδες να κατευθύνονται στα αποδυτήρια, η σκέψη μας ήταν μια: Μήπως είχαν χορτάσει οι Γάλλοι, ή ο εφιάλτης είχε τελειώσει;

Η εικόνα του δεύτερυ 45λέπτου άλλαξε. Στον αγώνα πέρασε ο Μαραγκός και η ομάδα μας σουλουπώθηκε, ενώ είχαμε και καλύτερη κυκλοφορία. Ωστόσο φάσεις δεν δημιουργούσαμε, καθώς τον έλεγχο του αγώνα στο μέγιστό του διάστημα τον είχαν οι Γάλλοι. Βέβαια είχαν χαλαρό ρυθμό, καθώς ήταν φανερό ότι όλοι αυτοί αστέρες, που σε λίγες μέρες έχουν ραντεβού με το Champione League ενώ γενικά τους περιμένει δύσκολη χρονιά, δεν θέλησαν να σπαταλήσουν δυνάμεις.

Ωστόσο δεν σταμάτησαν ποτέ να κυνηγούν το γκολ και στο 84' πέτυχαν το τέταρτο γκολ, και τι γκολ. Με ένα ωραίο συνδυασμό Γκοβού, Σισέ, Ζιντάν η μπάλα κατέληξε στον Ζιουλί στο ύψος της μικρής περιοχής που δεν αστόχησε από πολύ κοντά. Ο κόσμος ωστόσο ήταν διψασμένος και ζητούσε κι άλλο τέρμα αλλά τα πνεύματα ηρέμησαν στο άκουσμα της λήξης του Ιρλανδία-Ελβετία (0-0).

Πλέον το μαρτύριο της προκριματικής φάσης τέλειωσε και είναι καιρός για περισυλλογή...

Cyprus have taken part in the preliminaries 12 times to date, but they have yet to qualify for the FIFA World Cup™ finals or notch up any major successes. In the qualifiers for the 1962 tournament, the Cypriots came unstuck against Israel and their subsequent opponents were simply too strong.
In 1969, Cyprus suffered a humiliating 12-0 loss in the qualifiers to Germany. But they recovered well and later recorded 1-1 draws with France, the Czech Republic and Russia.
In 2000 they recorded their most emphatic win to date, beating Andorra 5-0. But their most important win came in 1998 in the Euro 2000 qualifiers, when they tripped up Spain with a 3-2 win.

Cyprus aims for another upset

Considered minnows for many years, Cyprus still have yet to qualify for the finals of a FIFA World Cup™. And, in the qualifying competition for 2002, they only finished above tiny Andorra. Two wins over the latter and two draws against Estonia were hardly enough to see them through to the finals.

But, the team from the third largest island in the Mediterranean have been drawing attention for all the right things. First, in qualifying for the 2000 European Championships, they beat mighty Spain 3-2. The defeat signalled the end of Javier Clemente's time as Spanish coach and made the world do a double-take.

And, when it almost happened again, there was another double-take. In the opening match of the 2004 European Championship qualifiers against France in Nicosia, they took the lead against the titleholders on the 15th minute mark through Yiannis Okkas. Zinedine Zidane and his team-mates then struggled to break down the resilient Cypriot defence before Djibril Cissé and Silvain Wiltord eventually produced the goals that saw Les Bleus turn the game around and avoid a humiliating defeat.

Cyprus followed up their outstanding performance against the French with just two wins against fellow Mediterranean islanders Malta, to finish just above the latter in the table.

In Michalis Konstantinou (Olympiacos Peireus Athens) and Yiannis Okkas (Olympiacos Peireus), Cyprus possess two talented strikers who have gained valuable experience playing in the Champions League. They may herald a brighter future for the national team.

They should of beaten Ireland. I had the game taped since I was watching the Greek game with Denmarck. Cyprus played better than Ireland and had many chances. They played great in the first half but in the second half they lagged. But Cyprus is still a developing team so nothing can be said still.

cyprus team has lots of youngsters...cyprus have lots of talents in football but they re still young...so..in the future i believe we will have a good national team

To me the Cypriot national team already is good. I saw the Cyprus-Ireland match and I was amazed on how much Cyprus has improved. The only thing Cyprus needs to do is put up a great defence and have great ball control then all will be great. I dont think you have to worry about strikers yet.

the main problem of cyp national team is that all the cypriots are playing as strikers :DYou guys have extrodianary strikers. You had great chances against Ireland in the first half. Right now you guys need to work on more in Defence.

Cyprus owned Italy yesterday and if there was one team that deserved the win it was Cyprus. They were controlling big parts of the game and they lost great chances especially in the second half.

Anastasiadis said he is proud of his players and he is right to be as they played the traditional football power of Italy as equal to equal and owned them. The experience of Italy though dominated for a few minutes in the end, and with this goal in the end they took a victory they didn't deserve.

Cyprus lost the chance for a historical victory, but this is football. I just hope that this result doesn't affect the Cypriots much psychologically. Because after 2006 they proved that they are a team determined to do good things - and if they don't lose their morale they are going to make more surprises in the near future.
