I'm in Montevideo and I'm reading in today's paper some things that this guy John O'neill, who seems to be the president of the australian federation has been saying. And believe me man, this sucks. How do you think you would be treated if you were going to play a definite match against, for example Italy or England or Argentina? And I'm not talking about a confederations cup or a friendly match. I'm talking about one position in the world cup! Now, without meaning to be disrespectful with all the aussies, this guy is an idiot. He has no clue on what he is talking about. We know about this. We have been playing football against other countries since 1901. Some of us believe Australia deserves to go to the WC because it would be a good chance for the aussies to learn more about soccer and if they get lucky and perform more or less acceptable it would be good for the sport in Australia.(Soccer is becoming more popular in Australia and that is good!

I agree that people around the globe have that idea that u talk about regarding South America and there is some truth in it.

The military in some countries in South America (police included) have been corrupted bastards that historically have done more than beat people with impunity.They have instated or/and supported criminal dictatorships in some countries in South America.(and they have tortured and made people disappear:re: Uruguay and Argentina for example...)

In others as you say-the police is corrupt-and yes in others "the small criminal goes to prison and the big criminal runs the country"...but ....I think that situation is not exclusive of South America....Look the world around us...

Congratulations to all Australian fans. This time it's your turn to celebrate!

It's a pity that Uruguay didn't make it. I mean, we had to play 18 very hard qualifying games... We beat Argentina, Paraguay and Ecuador, all qualified for the WC, and drew twice with world champions Brazil, both times the brazilians coming back near the end. I think we had made a lot more merits than Australia to be in the World Cup, however football is not about deserving, it's about getting results.

The playoff was tight, very even. We suffered the loss of a key player like Diego Forlan, and in my opinion the referees were too permissive. In leg 2 there should have been several red cards. But there's no excuses, aggregate was 1-1 at the final whistle, and it all came down to the PKs. Australia then showed they were better penalty takers and that gave them a ticket to play in the World Cup.

I think Australia has already made a big breakthrough by qualifying to a World Cup final, besides the Socceroos will likely be one of those curious, fan-favorite teams like the jamaican 'Reggae Boys' in 1998. They'll likely be placed as 3rd or 4th seed in the draw, so expect a though group.

I've heard Australia is joining the Asian Confederation, looking for a chance for direct qualifying, is that so? Well... let me tell you, here at Uruguay we would be very happy to swap places. That way, we'd only have two real matches to qualify instead of 18. And in two matches anything can happen... we know that.
