i think that rooney should have just been warned by the reff cus he just had a yellow and you could see he was really stressed and yeh.. he clapped, which he still shouldnt have done, but was under pressure and is still very young, so these things happen..

loooooool...well actually in everygame of football you always see footballers swear..liek when they zoom up you can actually make out what they're saying..its pretty funnny...so i dont blame rooney for swearing..he was frustrated..unless he was saying it directly to the reff... i dunno..if that was the case then that wasnt a smart move soo yeaa... lol thats how i see it..

new rule this year, and direct swearing at the ref is a yellow. so if he didnt give him a card for the obvious verbal attack and clap, then the ref would have to answer some questions.

It wasn't simply the fact that he clapped at the card, but that he did it directly at the ref. He was quite obviously showing the ref up, and even Ferguson admitted that the clap deserved the card. As for being young and making a mistake, thats true, but the ref isn't going to put that into consideration when a player does something like that. Its unacceptable on a professional pitch, whether your 16 or 36. "He's young" is not a valid excuse for unacceptable behaviour when you are a professional.

If you are in the EPL age doesnt matter and yes he deserved the card.

Just for the record, Ricardo Olivera of Betis was given a red card for a very similar incident to Rooney's. Against Barcelona today, he was shown a yellow for a foul (it looked like equal by both players on the replay) and he responded by clapping at the ref, receiving a second yellow immediately. So don't think that any other player would get away with it either. It was an act deserving of the red.
