Luxemburgo's 4-2-2-2 tactics are failing in Europe!

Luxemburgo has stated that he is "backtracking" and going back to old tried and tested formation :lol: (which IMO died long ago!!):

The Marca reports:

Which basically states Beckham's role in the team, pulling him away from his traditional winger position into a more central one. The rest of the article is below:

Essentially Luxemburgo calls his system a 4-2-2-2, however from another perspective it's a variation of a 4-4-2 with midfield diamond with this one being a 4-2-4 with a forward diamond. So Luxa has essentially reverted back to a formation that Brazil used in the early days when defensive strategies were much less the priority.

It's essentially a wingerless 4-2-4 with a typical back four which is unprotected by 2 DMs. The offense using the "trendy" "magical square" with
Ronaldo, Robinho, Raul and Baptista being part of a diamond where
Raul and Robinho seemingly switch positions on the diamond's head to
confuse their markers. Somewhat of an offensive (dual meaning ;) ) pseudo-version of the Dutch "total football" of the 70's.

In short. I think this formation is going to fail in Europe, but I'm willing to be proved wrong. I think Luxa should be given till December to make it work. Failing that, he probably should be fired.

Brazil itself plays a 4-1-2-1-2 (or 4-3-3 with dual triangles). Using a back four, 2 zonal marking CBs and 2 attacking full-backs. 1 DM (Emerson) and 2 wide-men (Zé Roberto and Kaká) with Ronaldinho behind Ronaldo/Robinho and Adriano. So, even though they do not use a forward diamond the "magical square" is coined by them.

Is this Luxemburgian 4-2-4 with a forward diamond a popular tactical
system in Brazil these days? No. Scolari would never use such a loose formation and neither Parreira.

To be honest I don't remember Luxemburgo having Santos play like this, can anyone who watched them more frequently comment?

In a faster paced football like Europe's I think the 4-2-4 channels too much of the game through the centre, thus robbing it of the speed and extra creativity it could have if they used wingers. In addition the lack of wingers
handicaps the fullbacks in case they requires additional assistance to stop a counter attack from opposing wingers, especially in a game that relies on aggresive/fast wingers as much as the Spanish one does, and Europe in general.

Anyhow my question and the result of this posting is the poll question:

1 - Keep Luxemburgo and give him till December to prove himself.
2 - Fire him now and cut the losses.

Firing him would mean that the soap opera that has become Madrid in the last few seasons would be forced to find yet another coach, who will typically use the same excuse that Luxa used at the end of last season citing that he did not have his choice of players in the team. That would see a sliding door of players coming and going and instability in the team, who's main fixtures are aging (Zidane, et al) and not necessarily being rejuvenated by Father Time.

What do you guys think?

Now, according to some others in the thread, they want Luxa to stay but change his formation, however this is usually not possible with coaches that are set on working a certain way. Luxa represents his formation and the formation he uses represents him - they are one in the same. So keeping Luxa is likely going to keep this formation in which I explained is likely to not do well. Being that Madrid is not one of my teams and I am a neutral (unless of course they play a team I support) then I am content to sit back and see what this formation can do. I don't mind if Luxa gets till December to use it, even if it could be a complete failure.

On the other hand, those of you who are Madrid fans, what are your opinions...do you want to cut losses now, or take the chance and give him till December?

Don't you see an interesting pattern throughout your threads? Those threads that have more than 10 replies will most certainly include some sort of fights and arrogant replies from you. Out of those 53 threads, only 6 have more than 50 posts. And out of those 6 only one has anything to do with soccer. the others are just full of your personal fights with everyone. Don't you realise what I am trying to tell you? That Test-Checkup was not meant to harras you cause I really didn't know that you even existed at that time. I just saw you fighting with nachi about Germany and knowing nachi I thought he had got you into that fight because of his extreme nationalism. That's why I tried to advise you and you can re-read all of that by yourself.

Today we have a game against A. Bilbao and we might see Luxa abandon his magical square. Let's see how it works out and maybe he will see that Real does not have enough Brasilians to use the square yet...not with un-flexible players like Raul and Beckham who have very limited skills if any...

You cannot use the square if Robinho is trying to dribble someone and Raul goes into his way. I mean four defenders are more than enough so Raul would be an extra obstacle in the game. He is too static so get rid of him. This weird obsession with him is taking us down. It's like pretending to win our trophies using our history. Yeah, we won't the CL cause we have won it 9 times already. The problem is that no one will give it to us if we don't take it...

emerson plays side by side to ze roberto & infront of them play kaka & ronaldinho & infront of them ronaldo & adriano, a 4-2-2-2 4mation but the difference is unlike beckham emerson & ze roberto provide a good backup in counter attacks when carlos & cafu go upfront plus kaka & ronaldinho can penetrate through the wings unlike baptista/raul.

Kaka does play wide for Brazil, at least in thegame I have seen, so it's not the same formation that Lux uses. Maybe in friendlies and experimental games you see different formations and beleive it's the same as Lux's.

Nice to see you guys are finally back to real madrid. Thing is Luxa can either keep a formation in mind and get the players to get adjusted to it, or he has to plan the 'formation' keeping in mind the players that are gonna start that particular game and also the opposition.
As of now he seems to be trying the formation thing, so hope it finally does work well for us, and of late we even have had a though time with refs. i don't like to sound like am making excuses, but we seriously have had the most rotten of luck and i only hope that all the bad luck due to us is over this early in the season. Its not that we need only luck to win, but a little lest of the bad thing wouldn't hurt......... :smoking:

Now someone mentioned that Luxa plays the same formation as Brazil, but I disagree. Brazil, when using their complete team and not an experimental one, use primarily a 4-1-2-1-2, where Emerson is essentially allowed to sweep across the midfield as well as Ronaldinho in jumping into the attack and back. Kaka also plays pretty wide at times (on either side) when Cafu and RC are not making runs up the flanks.

I think Luxa had aspirations to do the same, but with Beckham and Graveson permanent fixtures in Madrid, he does not have the same diversity amongst the midfielders.

RonaldoD08 suggested getting rid of Raul, but Raul popped two goals in the last game, so I don't think he's going anywhere.

Luxa's 4-2-2-2 though is trying to bring back the 4-2-4, which IMO is a deadly experiment...meaning it will likely go wrong.

Beckham is not a good central midfielder, and defensive duties are not his priority. You can see it when he plays. He can make a defensive play here and there, but he doesn't look like he is into it, IMO.

Graveson would have a disproportionate amount of work to do IMO, and the defense is not solid enough to work with only one midfielder that can adequately help them out.

Don' think dat 4-2-4 formation is gr8, 2 midfieldrs...neeeeh, midfielders r in da team to control an' pass da ball skilfully an' in da most comfortable way for forwards, just like Zizou does. An' 2 mids r just not enough, 1 must defend, 2 support attacks. I think 4-1-2-3 formation is gr8.

well the way how i see it, it is almost like we just have the back 4 a defensive mid and the rest of the team anywhere on the field and well it works, the only thing i think is wrong is Baptista, i think he cant play the kind of passing football real madrid plays, he is more of a pass the ball to me and i run fast and shoot, i dont think he fits in pretty good with the rest of the team

Essentially Luxemburgo calls his system a 4-2-2-2, however from another perspective it's a variation of a 4-4-2 with midfield diamond with this one being a 4-2-4 with a forward diamond. So Luxa has essentially reverted back to a formation that Brazil used in the early days when defensive strategies were much less the priority.

Is this Luxemburgian 4-2-4 with a forward diamond a popular tactical
system in Brazil these days? No. Scolari would never use such a loose formation and neither Parreira.

To be honest I don't remember Luxemburgo having Santos play like this, can anyone who watched them more frequently comment?

In a faster paced football like Europe's I think the 4-2-4 channels too much of the game through the centre, thus robbing it of the speed and extra creativity it could have if they used wingers. In addition the lack of wingers
handicaps the fullbacks in case they requires additional assistance to stop a counter attack from opposing wingers, especially in a game that relies on aggresive/fast wingers as much as the Spanish one does, and Europe in general.

Anyhow my question and the result of this posting is the poll question:

1 - Keep Luxemburgo and give him till December to prove himself.
2 - Fire him now and cut the losses.

Firing him would mean that the soap opera that has become Madrid in the last few seasons would be forced to find yet another coach, who will typically use the same excuse that Luxa used at the end of last season citing that he did not have his choice of players in the team. That would see a sliding door of players coming and going and instability in the team, who's main fixtures are aging (Zidane, et al) and not necessarily being rejuvenated by Father Time.

What do you guys think?

Luxemburgo had been at the Bernabeu for less than a year
Real Madrid sacked coach Wanderley Luxemburgo following an emergency meeting of the club's board on Sunday.

The 53-year-old Brazilian, who was Real's fifth coach in the space of two and a half years, had been in charge of the team for just over 11 months.

Reserve team manager Juan Ramon Lopez Caro has taken over as caretaker boss.

A club statement said: "Luxemburgo will not continue as Real Madrid coach. The club has already been in contact with captain Raul to break the news."

The club reportedly held initial talks immediately after Saturday's 1-0 win over Getafe, which was the club's first victory in three league games.

It is believed Luxemburgo did not take the team's training session on Sunday.
