Ok.....
Aboriginies have inhabited the land for thousands of years. In 1788 James Cook from England settled Australia while looking for land to dump convicts from overcrowded jails in England. So in a way the aborigines land was taken. So whats your point?

I think he was trying to ask whether Australians descend from Aboriginies? Is that what you're trying to say Majid?

Youre wrong.
Australia is just like the USA - a multicultural country, except Australia was settled as a place to dump convicts as Hardssa has said already. Its like the Indians in America - you arent all decended from them are you?

Whats your point? Same can be said with the Indians and the US. Its pointless arguing that we "invaded" them because without "invading" these places two of the best nations in the world (Australia and the USA) Wouldnt exist.

Nope, aborigines are the original native people that inhabited Australlia. They had a nomadic kind of culture. Majority of them were killed when the European settlers took over. It's similar to the story of the native people in the what is now called USA. Cruel bloody lessons from the past ... but thats history.
Infact during the period 'when the sun ne'er set on the British empire', Britain used Australlia a jail for their prisoners (something like Siberia). Then there was a period of gold rush in Australlia which again brought in Europeans (mainly British) and laborers. So as of now its a multicultural society. But they are mostly of British descend.

Its pointless arguing that we "invaded" them because without "invading" these places two of the best nations in the world (Australia and the USA) Wouldnt exist. Two of the best nations for 'white' people maybe, but not for Aboriginal people in Australia, who suffer from higher incarceration (prison sentences), infant mortality rates, unemployment, suicide rates, general health and poverty. But, Australians have been trying to change this unacceptable situation and this country has done much more to address the issues of Indigenous people than other countries, but still needs to do more. We're all still waiting for our weasal, right wing prime minister to say sorry, but doesn't look like he's man enough to do it.
By the way Majid, where are you from, if you read this, which I assume you will, since you started this thread???

It's similar to the story of the native people in the what is now called USA. Cruel bloody lessons from the past ... but thats history..Yeah, I would tend to agree with most of this, but you can't group all Aboriginal people into one basket. An Aboriginal from Northern Queensland is totally unrelated to one from Victoria. In fact, there are over 500 different groups with 250 different languages. I'll just add to this that Aboriginal people find it offensive for them to be reffered to as 'aborigines' with the A in lower case, as if they are artefacts or something, but I understand how most people are not aware of this, because until lately we learnt very little about their history and issues.
This is mainly true, although a bit simplistic. There were other migration periods than the gold rush days and after WWII many non-British migrants were invited to come to Australia because Australia needed manpower to build its industries and it felt threatened by a perceived 'Asian invasion' the so-called 'Yellow Peril" and the belief that it needed to 'Populate or Perish'. Australia is a very multicultural country now, with the largest groups coming from Italy, Greece and Vietnam.

But I guess most ppl pretend to be ignorant of this and prefer to bask in the present day's glory. As I said the clock cannot be reversed but good to hear that something is being done but it'll be good if guys know their stuff (like u).
Anyway two good posts philipas

And remeber this isn't just an Australian issue... through the ages people have killed for land and provided injustices on inhabitants of land. Its just been a way of progressing the human race. However the idea that the original inhabitants of this land were killed and given diseases from overseas is disgusting. But i wouldn't be here if Australia wasn't settled by the English.

For me ''settling'', is making settlement at a land which was not inhabited before. I believe conquering a land is an ''invasion''. What strange do you see :D ?

Ok, I'm living here with a bunch of ignorant seppo's and constantly have to put up with there F$#%ing ignorance about Australia, then I go to find out news about our beloved socceroos......... and find this useless tripe!!!!!
For starters Captain Cook did not settle Australia in 1778, he discovered the east coast in 1770, Capt. Arthur Phillip, R.N. was commissioned as the first Governor of New South Wales. He set sail on May 13th, 1787 from
Portsmouth with 11 vessels. He arrived in N.S.W. with 717
convicts of whom 180 were women, guarded by 191 marines under 19
officers. These are not Aborigines, as if anybody bothered to pickup a dictionary Aborigine means the original inhabitants or natives, just like indigenous. Captain Cook was killed on a return visit to Hawaii in 1780, long before the First Fleet Landed. Go socceroos..... lets put our efforts into something we know and care about shall we????

Hey, iīm from Uruguay and iīve been reading this thread for a while now, since we beat Argentina and knew we have to play the WC play-offs with Australia.
This thread got my attention more than others though, i think you aussies donīt realize how lucky you are that your society is formed by inmigrants and natives, you probably donīt know much about Uruguay so let me fill you in.
One of our forefathers, a very ignorant and stupid one, back around the 1800ī had all our native population slaughtered because they couldnīt control them, this is something that every uruguayan is sooooooooo ashame of, itīs a huge embarassment for us, so much that we call ourselver "Charruas" (the name of the indian tribe that inhabited our land before the spanish came), nowadays there are no Charruas left, we call ourselfves Charruas in honor to them, we try to keep their memory alive as much as we can, we have accquired many of their ways, every uruguayan likes to think, eventhough we know itīs impossible, that we have at least a bit of Charrua blood, we still thing their spirit is alive in us, thats why everybody calls the way of Uruguay of playing football "garra Charrua" (Charruas warrior spirit).
We are a country in wich all of its people are direct descendants from europeans, mostly spanish and italian, and you can bet all of us would love to have also Charrua descendance, so.................yes aboriginies=australians, it was their land first than yours, now itīs yours also of course, and you should all consider yourselves as one mixing your cultures to form only one...................the Australian culture............they should be part as you british descendants as well as you should form part of their aboriginies descendance...............afeter all..............YOUīRE ALL AUSTRALIANS!!!!!

Well said Yorugua! ;) ...Regarding the "mixing of cultures" to form one(fusion?asimilation? )...We Australians are trying hard...but this "mixing pot" is hard to cook (and I for one support multiculturalism).....Sometimes this melting pot is pure aroma and celebration and others..well it smells like stew  :lol:as u could notice in some interventions.
What a topic that of an Australian identity!
