U.S. Men Begin Preparation for 2001 Campaign with 25-Player Camp in San Diego

Arena's Squad to Face China in Oakland on Jan. 27 to Kickoff 2001

CHICAGO (Tuesday, January 2, 2001) - U.S. Men's National Team head coach Bruce Arena has finalized a roster of 25 players for a 14-day training camp in San Diego, which begins on Friday (Jan. 5) and runs through Jan. 18. The camp marks the team's first steps of 2001 toward the team's 10-game World Cup qualifying campaign, which begins against Mexico on Feb. 28 in Columbus, Ohio.
Arena's 25-player roster is made up completely of Major League Soccer stars, including seven players from the 2000 U.S. Open Cup champion Chicago Fire, but does not include any players from D.C. United or the Los Angeles Galaxy as they prepare for the CONCACAF Champions Cup being played in the Los Angeles area from January 16-21. The seven Chicago players include veterans Chris Armas, C.J. Brown, Zach Thornton and Josh Wolff, in addition to uncapped players DaMarcus Beasley, Carlos Bocanegra and Diego Gutierrez.

The Kansas City Wizards, winners of MLS Cup 2000, will be represented by five players, including Chris Klein who went 90 minutes in each of the USA's final two matches of 2000. The remaining Wizards are led by goalkeeper Tony Meola, capped 94 times for the U.S., veteran forward Roy Lassiter (30 caps, 4 goals), once-capped midfielder Kerry Zavagnin and second-year professional Nick Garcia (no caps).

The NY/NJ MetroStars, Miami Fusion and Dallas Burn will be represented by three players each, while the Colorado Rapids and Columbus Crew will have one player each in camp. Two-time World Cup veteran and former U.S. captain John Harkes will be one of two players representing the New England Revolution, alongside 24-year-old midfielder Joe Franchino who earned his first cap late last year.

All told, the 25-player roster includes 11 players with no caps and three more with just one or two full international appearances.

"With Major League Soccer out of season for the next three months, this is an important period of preparation for us," said Arena. "This is the time to get our pool of players into camp and focused on our games at the end of this month against China and Colombia, as well as our World Cup matches in February and March."

The U.S. opens qualifying at home at Crew Stadium against Mexico on Feb. 28 (7:30 p.m. ET / ESPN2 & Telemundo), before traveling to Honduras for their second qualifier on March 28. The team's third qualifier has been slated for April 25 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City against the winner of the Costa Rica/Guatemala playoff on Saturday (Jan. 6) in Miami.

Prior to qualifying, the U.S. will battle China on Jan. 27 in Oakland (2:30 p.m. PT / ESPN2), and Colombia at Miami's Orange Bowl on Feb. 3 in a match which will be announced officially later this week.
