O'Neill said hes going to discuss with Fifa at their conference in Morocco about Australia hosting the 2018 World Cup (long way away:faint2: )

What do you guys think of this? I think its an excellent idea, it will develop our infrastructure and also raise awareness of the real football in this country.

Hopefully it will be pretty popular by 2018 though.

Ha i'll almost be 30 years old... I always used to think about what it would be like to have the WC here. So of course awesome idea, some new bigger stadiums possibly and a chance for the critics etc. to see the best football firsthand.

It would be absolutely awesome.. To see the WC in some of the best stadiums in the world with the biggest teams in the world.. and actually being able to goto the game would absolutely be CRAZY!!

Oh god i hope hooligans don't take over  I watched a dvd the other day and some of the stuff on it was brutal. Hooligan fighting and deaths from WC 98, Euro 96, 92 etc... disgusting stuff.

Also if we get the World Cup for 2018, New Zealand will also get a few games, so we'll be helpin NZ out in the process. As much as we hate them

Yeh it's the women's Under 20 WC. And know that you say it i hope Australia hosts the World Cup in its own right so that there's a better chance of Adelaide getting some group matches.

I agree, I think its brilliant, currently the Australian media is a bit ignorant of soccer in Australia. For it to happen there would need to be way more coverage of soccer, not just rugby and AFL. I've also heard that soccer is currently the most played sport in Australia so surely that must be a good sign. As for the kiwis hosting some, why not? :)

Yeah its a great sign, but if the heads of football here really wanted football to take off, they would have gotten the A-League televised. Like with AFL and Rugby codes, television increses interest 100's of times and makes the game more easily accessible for thousands of people.

The only thing holding back football right now is media, once this hurdle is passed things will come much more easier and football will become a prominent code amongst the community. However this is a long way down the track.

we don't really have the resources to hold a WC and the necessary support from government and the general public. It would be good though...

Yeh definately we don't now, but in 13 years it could be whole different situation. If the A-League is still on it would have been running for 13 years and no doubt it will be a lot stronger. General support would be a lot greater. And I'm sure for an event like the Olympics, The World Cup if we were to get it would be supported by the government.

It looks like England is planning to put a bid in for the 2018 WC now. As a part of the rotation policy 2018 was suppose to be the year where an Asian or Oceanic Country hosted the World Cup. Greedy Poms :mad2:  If they were to make a bid we would be beaten hands down i'd say. Their football infrastructure far surpasses ours.

Sure, but where would you host the games? We would need to build venues.
So far: Sydney has two (SFS and Telstra), Melbourne 2 (Telstra and MCG), and Brisbane (Suncorp). Ultimately Adelaide, Perth, Canberra and Newcastle would get games but would need major stadium upgrades or brand new ones, and even then thats 7 or 8 venues. Where else????

Well Adelaide would still host smoe group stage matches at Hindmarsh. At its best its still a first class stadium with an immaculate pitch.

I doubt it, Hindmarsh is actually below par, even for the euros the smallest stadiums had capacities exceeding 35000, Hindmarsh has a capacity of 16. I have no doubt Australia could pull it off with our money, but it may mean converting some footy stadiums.

Hey if Aus got the world cup dont you think the government would pour money into upgrading the facilities like they do for every other big sporting event etc the olympics and commonwealth games, they would have the time and finances to do it! Just depends on whether they think where they think were fit as a nation to hold it!

dude the stadiums whould be great think about it they build 10 new stadiums and give them to the A-League Clubs (given that the A-League is expanded) that would be amazing new FOOTBALL ONLY stadiums

Exactly, it wouldnt just boost soccer during the world cup but for the whole future. Imagine having a stadium devoted to soccer that is like the aussie equivalent of the san siro or nou camp. That would be crazy and would or should pull in big numbers of people. The only problem would be ticket pricing as we are seeing for the qualifiying final.

If Australia did host the World Cup, it would be a massive boost to Aussies economy, as well as football. since 2002, football in Japan has risen abotu 150% in popularity, and is now in comptetion with baseball sa the countries favourite pass time. and were winning!

Mmm well hopefully it will go ahead. Thing is a lot would need to change first. And im sure this could be done over the next 13 years.

I'm afraid England is really putting a bid. But if Fifa ($$$$) politics don't change, it will be held in Australia (or China, if it really comes out they want it).
At this point Fifa ($$$$) is just aiming to develop football in new markets, and Australia is a promising one.
About ignoring the rotation, there are speculations that they would be willing to drop 2014 South American turn in order to put England. It would be disgusting - it's almost 100% agreed to be in Brazil, and this could be the most fascinating WC in the history.
Conmebol won't accept this (they'd menace to boycott South Africa 2010), unless Fifa ($$$$) fix definately 2018 to Brazil. This would be the only chance 2018 not to be in Asia/Oceania. Most probably it will be. And the fight will be against China.

Oh don't you just love all the politics and boycotts

Well hopefully its here, 13 years is plenty of time and im sure by then the standards surrounding football here will be better in every aspect. Hopefully they'll have a preference to choose Australia over say China. Japan Korea was the last hosts, why not move it away from there and give us a go :D

And whats the rush to have England host anyway? Be great to have it there, but id rather see South Africa and Australia get a turn beforehand.

i think it would be so good to see Australia host...
It would expose soccer to all the people of Australia that do not have a clue about the game.

And they might even 'flick' the channel and watch the world cup if it came to Australia, then might even say to their kids... ' ej arthur...marthur... why dont you kids go play that sport " and therefore... the sport wiill become more and more popular, and take over CRICKET( i hope that happens in australia) :D

ok thats my say lol

the world cup in 2002 still got watched in 2002 by 2.1 million viewers - more than the AFL grand final in the same year. so its not that bad but if we make the WC for starters then popularity and hype will deffinetley increase.
