Gilardino remains a mystery to me. Lippi might have some post game explanations....he actually better because his tactics for the first 40 minutes, or Italy's lack of drive was pathetic. My only guess is that in the first game vs Scotland back in March or April last year, the Scots packed the box very heavily not allowing for Gilardino to move much so perhaps Lippi thought that two bigger men would be more physical or could add to an aerial assault better? However, in the first game Gila and Cassano were much MUCH more effective than Vieri and Iaquinta were today.

I can only guess that Cassan was left out because of his contract disputes with Roma and Lippi probably didn't want that affecting his game.

Lippi better start Gilardino on Wednesday. Italy should have won this game today, it was their own fault that they did not.

Ref'ing was impeccable.

The defender believes that the young star should not be frozen out of the Roma first squad.
Fabio Cananvaro has defended Antonio Cassano and his decision not to renew with the Giallorossi, asking the Capital city side to let him play so as not to miss out on playing for Lippi’s squad in the next world cup.

"In my opinion he must play. Cassano must think about settling his things. First of all it will do him well to play and then he must take his decisions."

The Italian national team captain spoke as well about the Azzurri.

"Apart from the FIFA standings, we are able to play against all rivals. Brazil is superior to everyone from half of the pitch onwards. We, however, have a valid squad in all departments. We have the values to arrive till the end."

As for Gilardino, he is said to be a last minute casualty. And the issue with Cassano is simple, as long as he does not play regularly, he will not be called up.

Yes, just read about Gila's "injury", in the article Lippi says he was not on form and was to be rested for Wednesday. I think he will start then.

yeah giraldino was probably just given a rest, and cassano probably won't see any action unless he plays regularly as was said earlier by darran. what is cassano's situation anyways? does his contract with roma not run out in january or something?

I think it runs out in June, but he can stay at Rioma till January unless another club comes for him. I think Rioma should not freeze Cassano out of the side just because he does not want to extend his contract.
