Is he really going to play a 4-5-1 without a single defensive
midfielder?!?
Ok, fine... he may get away with it against the likes of Wales or Poland
but if he tries to do that against any proper team it could get England in a lot of trouble.
The BBC has describe Beckham's new role in the team as a 'quarterback',
isn't that the one who throws a really longball for a running player to
catch?
Is this a new role in football invented by Becks himself? I hope not!
I can just picture the tactics, match kick off - Lamps passes the ball back
to Beckham while Rooney legs it towards goal, Becks pelts it up the
field while the other 8 outfield players tackle everyone in the
opposing team...
kidding aside, SGE is a horrible tactician. If the FA could only convince a Capello, Scolari, or some other excellent tactician to coach England they might be able to make use of their most talented squad in 2 decades!
SGE gotta GOOOO!

This is the formation
-------------------Robinson (James)--------------------------
----------------Carragher----------Rio-----------------------
----Phil Neville-------------------------------Ahsley Cole-----
-----------------------Beckham-----------------------------
-----SWP-----------------------------------Joe Cole---------
----------------Lampard------------Gerrard-----------------
-------------------------Rooney--------------------------
according to this formation, Beckham will invraibably have to defend. He is not bad at that too. Beckham has been made an out and out DM here. Gerrard and Lampard are both players who like going forward. If they can have the guarantee of a person doing the defensive mid duties. Beckham's lack of attacking skills were highlighted in the euro's. Better to have him as a defensive mid in that case ( ie if he must be included in the team). So, I think this is the best scheme ever to come in SGE's head.

i think that is a great formation, u see gerrad and lampard would be supporting rooney, and SWP and joe cole would be runnign up the line and putting in the crosses, bekham no longer reall has a space on the team so they had to make one for him, however i think he would be doing more good there than on the wing, also where is owen in this formation, now certainly this would change if owen is called up, cause certainly owen cannot play by himself up front

I once played in a match where we dropped the ball back, everyone ran to goal, and the person with possession of the ball just launched it up the pitch.
It failed...
Why not use a standard 4-4-2, throw Defoe in as the second striker, and be done with it?

The 4-5-1 is failing! Sven did not make any subs at half-time. Beckham sent in a brilliant cross to Cole, who missed! Other than that and a few saves, this match is in shambles!

FA needs to fire SGE. He's going to ruin your chances...the man is mad :loco:

Cole scored the lone goal so far, which is rather sad. The only quality players standing out are Beckham, Rooney, and SWP. This is terrible and boring. Cole got LUCKY off of his goal, and thankfully was subbed out!

and because of the goal SGE is allowed to last another day...

well my guess is that they are pretty much more playing a safer game, and not risking too much

This formation is so flawed it is unbelievable. It works well when a team has a real holding midfielder, a la Makelele. However, with Beckham there, who to be fair can't tackle all that well, England turn into a long ball team. Joe Cole is useless and should be out of the team, and Rooney cannot be deployed as a lone-striker. He is far too creative to be limited to playing up front on his own. He needs space behind the strikers to create havoc. This is the team that SGE needs to pick:
----------------Robinson-------------
G.Nevillle-Ferdinand----Terry----A.Cole
------------------Parker-------------
----------Lampard------Gerrard------
----------SWP----------Rooney-----
------------------Owen-------------
With that formation we may actually get somewhere  .
