SEOUL - The Korea Football Association announced Friday that they had narrowed down their search for Jo Bonfrere’s replacement as Korea Republic national coach to seven foreign coaches, although they did not provide any names.
Chairman of the KFA’s technical committee Lee Hoi-taek said: “We had 31 candidates, ten of which were Korean and now we have just seven foreign candidates.”
That list is expected to contain the names of Ian Porterfield, Berti Vogts, Marco Biesla, Phillippe Troussier, Pim Verbeek, Rudi Voeller and Bobby Robson but Lee was not forthcoming.
“The process will not be carried out in public and we will make an official announcement when a new coach has been found.
“Today’s meeting was just the first stage of the process, there has been no decision,” declared Lee who is also the Vice-President of the association.
It is believed that Mick McCarthy and Bruno Metsu are not being considered as they are both currently employed elsewhere and the declaration that no Koreans are on the list obviously spells the end of former national team coach Cha Bum-keun’s chances.
The new coach will be appointed sometime in September and will take control of the team ahead of next summer’s World Cup, for which qualification was achieved on June 3.
Drumroll please?
