AMERICANS LITTLE ACTION; CASEY TO DORTMUND
14 Dec 2000, 17:51 (EDT)
It was a particularly quiet week in Europe for the Americans abroad, with only three seeing any action at all – but there could be another one on the horizon. Conor Casey is reported to be signing with Borussia Dortmund.

Conor Casey's deal is supposed to be worked out very soon and the University of Portland sophomore should be in the yellow of Dortmund until 2005.

Nottingham Forest skated to a 2-0 win over Portsmouth, with Ben Olsen passing to a teammate who was fouled in front of the box for a direct kick. Forest scored off that kick, so Olsen was responsible for one goal, even if he didn't actually assist on it. His performance was one of two rated “outstanding” by the Nottingham Forest website. Forest is tied for fifth in the Second Division, on 39 points.

Brad Friedel was in goal for Blackburn Rovers once again, pretty much their number one now. They drew 0-0 with Queens Park Rangers in the English First Division. Rovers are in ninth place on 36 points.

Finally, as far as playing Americans, Earnie Stewart managed to make it through 68 minutes in NAC Breda's match with Utrecht in the Dutch First Division. As if that wasn't enough, Breda was destroyed 5-0. They sit in 11th, with 20 points, in a freefall after a great start to the season during which they were in first place for a short time.

Now, back to England. Fulham continues to fly high in the First Division, but Marcus Hahnemann and Eddie Lewis have been shifted to primarily backup roles. Hahnemann continues to get the bench in back of Northern Ireland number-one goalkeeper Maik Taylor, while Lewis seems to be cup-tied by boss Jean Tigana. Fulham won 3-1 over West Bromwich Albion this past weekend, strengthening their lead at the top of the standings with 52 points.

Joe-Max Moore did not dress for the 5-0 humiliation of Everton by Manchester City at Maine Road but was nominated for U.S. Soccer Player of the Year. Everton is in 14th position in the Premier League, on 21 points. Also of note with Everton, the Liverpool council has all but rejected the team's bid to put a new stadium in the King's Docks area and the club is $32 million in debt, according to the most recent reports from the front office. Not exactly the best time to be a Toffees supporter.

Wimbledon had Ian Feuer warming the bench in their 3-0 win over Birmingham City. The Dons hold down 11th place in the Second Division on 30 points.

Glasgow Rangers got back a little room, moving into third in Scotland on the strength of a 2-0 win over Motherwell. They still trail Celtic by 13 points. American star Claudio Reyna missed the match due to serving a suspension for a red card.

Around Europe, no other Americans saw any action. Quickly, here are the results of interest.

David Regis' Metz squad lost 1-0 to Paris St. Germain. Metz is in 16th position, two from bottom in the French First Division.

Deportivo La Coruna tied Kasey Keller's Rayo Vallecano squad 1-1. Rayo, which advanced to the final 16 of the UEFA Cup on Keller's goaltending last week, is tied for fourth on 23 points in the Spanish La Liga.

Hertha Berlin crashed 4-0 to Bayer Leverkusen without Tony Sanneh. The midfielder is injured but should return within the next few games. Hertha is in fourth in the Bundesliga, with 28 points.

Neither Landon Donovan nor Frankie Hejduk saw any time for Bayer Leverkusen as they thrashed Hertha Berlin 4-0. Leverkusen are top in the Bundesliga, on 31 points.

John O'Brien is still recovering from an injury for Ajax in Holland, but his team went down 3-1 to Feyenoord. Ajax is in fourth place in Holland, on 30 points.

Sporting Lisbon managed to turn around a run of bad luck with a 2-1 win over Belenenses, but Jovan Kirovski did not play. Sporting is tied for second in Portugal, on 29 points.

Finally, even though there's no word on whether DaMarcus Beasley had anything to do with it, his team Tenerife drew 2-2 with Eibar in Spain's Second Division. Tenerife is in first place, having been relegated from La Liga only a short time ago.

CONOR AND COBI LOOK TO EUROPE
11 Dec 2000, 18:15 (EDT)
American international Conor Casey is reportedly on his way to German club Borussia Dortmund after signing a long-term contract while Cobi Jones is considering a move abroad in the not-too-distant future.

Various news outlets have reported that American Olympic team member Conor Casey has signed a four-and-a-half year deal with the German giants. He will be the second American to have signed a contract with the club, after Jovan Kirovski. He will start with the reserve team as German clubs have a limit of non-European Union players named to their first-team squad. The Dortmund reserves are currently in the relegation zone of the German Reserve League Third Division.

The 19-year-old is a member of Clive Charles' University of Portland Pilots men's soccer team. In 1999, Casey was named the West Coast Conference co-Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in leading his team, conference and the nation in scoring with 23 goals and seven assists for 53 points. This year, his team went 10-7-2 overall, with wins over Indiana, Cal State-Fullerton and Washington.

According to the NAC Breda website “The Rat,” Cobi Jones is looking for a bigger paycheck than what the Los Angeles Galaxy can pay him. And “The Rat” thinks that Breda may be able to pay it. It does not hurt that Breda already has one of Jones' American strike mates on its books in Earnie Stewart.
