Twenty Serie A stars have been shortlisted for the inaugural FIFPro World XI Player Awards.
A total of 55 players are in contention to be selected after 38,000 players were asked to vote by FIFPro (Fédération Internationale des Associations de Footballers Professionnels), the worldwide representative organisation for all professional footballers.
Milan are the most represented club with 10 players included, such as Marcos Cafu, Paolo Maldini, Andrea Pirlo and Andriy Shevchenko (pictured).
Champions Juventus have seven players put forward, including summer signing Patrick Vieira from Arsenal.
Fellow Serie A newcomers Walter Samuel and Luis Figo are named too after they left Real Madrid for Inter.
Seven Italian players have been nominated, such as Gigi Buffon, Alessandro Nesta and even Gennaro Gattuso.
The final World XI will be announced at the FIFPro awards ceremony at Wembley Conference and Exhibition Centre on 19th September 2005.
There will also be three further awards presented at the evening – the World Player of the Year, awarded to whoever in the World XI receives the most votes, the FIFPro Legend award voted for by the FIFPro Awards Committee, and the Young Player of the Year voted for by fans across the globe in the only public voting category of the awards.
