Claudio Reyna was the man for Rangers, while Sporting's Jovan Kirovski and Hertha Berlin's Tony Sanneh got back into the action for their sides. “Baby Ben” started for Forest and Earnie Stewart was first eleven for NAC Breda.
Rangers midfielder Claudio Reyna started once again and brought home the side's only goal in a 1-1 draw against Dundee United. Reyna tallied in the 18th minute off a feed from Michael Mols and fired home an unstoppable shot from just outside the box. The draw gave Rangers a point, which doesn't do much in their Scottish Premier League run – as Celtic destroyed Aberdeen 6-0 to maintain first place by ten points over third-place 'Gers.
Things are looking up for Dutch First Division side NAC Breda after a 1-1 draw with second-place Vitesse Arnhem. Earnie Stewart started for Breda and has bagged a handful of goals this season, while his team has now gone two games without a loss. They have pulled to 10th place in the league on 20 points.
American forward Jovan Kirovski saw action in his second league game of the year as Sporting Lisbon drew 0-0 in Portugese First Division action. He came on as a 79th minute substitute for Alberto Acosta as the Lisbon side gamely got a point from Pacos de Ferreira. Sporting is in third place in Portugal, on 30 points.
Tony Sanneh, too, saw action for the first time in a while, as his Hertha Berlin squad fell 3-1 to leaders Bayern Munich. Sanneh was brought in as a 67th minute substitute in an attacking mode, in an attempt to pull back at least a goal from the Bundesliga toppers. Hertha slipped to sixth with the loss, now still on 28 points.
Although Frankie Hejduk did not play for Bayer Leverkusen as they finished 2-0 winners over Wolfsburg, new boss Berti Vogts signed him to a two-year contract extension last week. Obviously the American figures in the former German national team coach's plans. Landon Donovan did not play for the Leverkusen first team side, but he has seen play for the reserves. Leverkusen is in fourth place in the Bundesliga on 31 points.
Rayo Vallecano's UEFA Cup success last week set up a fourth-round home and home with French team Girondins Bordeaux. American keeper Kasey Keller will be in goal for the Spanish side, flying high now after a 2-2 draw to Barcelona. Keller did not play in the league match but will see time in the UEFA Cup matches after helping Rayo through the last two rounds of the competition. If Rayo survive Bordeaux, they face the winner of the Alaves-Inter Milan matchup. Rayo is fourth in La Liga, on 23 points.
David Regis did not play for French First Division side Metz as they drew 1-1 with Lille. Metz is 16th in the French Championnat.
Ajax Amsterdam pounded FC Twente 5-1 in the Dutch First Division without American John O'Brien, still recovering from injury. Ajax is fourth on 33 points in Holland.
Now, in England, Joe-Max Moore was expected to start up front for Everton in the Premier League but Walter Smith changed his mind, leaving Moore on the bench for Danny Cadamarteri partnered Kevin Campbell. Everton went on to draw the match 1-1 with West Ham. Moore never got in. Everton is in 14th in the Premiership on 22 points.
Moving to the First Division, Brad Friedel continued in goal for Blackburn Rovers and was helped out by a brace from his side as he registered a clean sheet 2-0 against Burnley. It was almost not a clean sheet as a late goal by Burnley's Ian Moore was overturned after Moore was judged to have fouled Friedel. The win jumps Rovers to a tie for sixth in the First Division on 39 points.
Nottingham Forest is seeing its hopes of promotion back to the Premiership slide away after a 1-0 loss to Queens Park Rangers in London. Ben Olsen played the entire game but came away empty as a goal scorer. Stern John came on as an 85th minute substitute and according to the official Nottingham Forest website game report, played more inspired than the rest of the team. Forest still lost though and boss David Platt may lose again as reports are suggesting that the City Ground outfit may not be able to afford Ben Olsen on a full transfer. Forest is tied with Blackburn Rovers for sixth in the league on 39 points.
Fulham continued its unparalleled run of form with a 3-1 win over Tranmere Rovers. With the win, the Cottagers are trying to pull away, on 55 points less than halfway through the First Division fixture list. The team went down 3-0 to Liverpool in the Worthington Cup Fifth Round last week but still have an F.A. Cup date with Manchester United to look forward to in January. Marcus Hahnemann made the bench while Eddie Lewis was left out of the side.
Brian McBride is in Preston North End, training with the team in an effort to reach full fitness by January. He was a spectator as PNE crashed hard to Gillingham, 4-0. Preston is in a tie for eighth in the First Division on 38 points.
Finally, D.C. United and American international defender Jeff Agoos has been at West Bromwich Albion for a two-week trial with a view toward a permanent move to the First Division club. Even though WBA is in fourth place on 41 points, their defensive cover has gotten thin through injuries and suspension.
